This year’s Children’s Day carries an extra special meaning for primary students at ASJ Foshan.
To mark the 120th Anniversary of Jinan University, the Hand in Hand with Childlike Hearts, Carry Forward the Jinan Spirit with Joy Children’s Day Celebration was hosted on May 29 at the Shipai Campus of Jinan University. Jointly organised by the Office of Basic Education, the Communist Youth League Committee, the Student Affairs Office and all affiliated schools of Jinan University, the event gathered primary, secondary and university students.
As a representative affiliated school for Hong Kong and Macao students, teachers and students from the Primary Division of ASJ Foshan were invited to attend. Joining faculty and students from Jinan University and its other affiliate campuses, they nurtured patriotism and inherited the Jinan spirit through interactive exchanges, celebrating a heartfelt, heritage-rich festival of growth.
Q&A Pod:
Intergenerational Growth Dialogue
At the venue, the Q&A Pod for All Ages emerged as one of the event’s biggest highlights.
Questions ranged from “What is university life like?” and “What did you love doing most as a kid?” to “How do you find your passion?” and “What do you hope to be when you grow up?”. These earnest, childlike inquiries built a bridge connecting students across age groups.
On the day of the event, selected Q&A cards were put on display. Young pupils were curious about university students’ daily studies and aspirations, while college students cared about the youngsters’ growing pains and little dreams.
Visitors paused to read the notes. Between the lines, they perceived diverse puzzles along life’s growth journey and discovered they shared many similar curiosities and hopes.

Fun Fair Activities:
Inherit Jinan's Culture Through Exploration
Beyond the Q&A exhibition, an array of fun fair activities also drew crowds of student participants. Featuring themed booths including Jinan History Quiz Master, Campus Scenery Matching Game, Jinan Motto Puzzle Build and Jinan Celebrity Matching Link, the event artfully wove Jinan University’s 120-year educational legacy and campus culture into hands-on interactive experiences.
Students wandered from booth to booth. Through collaborative challenges and entertaining games, they explored Jinan’s history and culture while gaining a deeper understanding of the school motto: Loyalty, Sincerity, Earnestness and Respect.
As an affiliated school of JNU for Hong Kong & Macao students founded under the guidance of Jinan University, ASJ Foshan gains an immersive encounter with Jinan’s profound cultural lineage through this experience. It also enables the school’s young learners to closely appreciate the rich humanistic heritage accumulated over a century at this time-honored overseas Chinese university.
Approaching Overseas Chinese Culture:Reflect Upon Patriotism and Cultural Roots
That afternoon, Primary Division students visited the World Overseas Chinese Documentation Centre of Jinan University alongside young student guides from Jinan University Affiliated Primary School to learn the history and tales of overseas Chinese.
Through precious cultural relics and touching anecdotes, children gained an in-depth understanding of the bond linking ancestral roots and shared devotion to the motherland. The experience cultivated their affection for China, Hong Kong and Macao and strengthened their sense of mission as young members of the Greater Bay Area.
During the activity, students watched clips from the film Love Letter to Grandma, experiencing the family affection and longing embedded within Qiaopi through moving footage.
University student volunteers delivered an engaging, easy-to-follow introduction covering the definition, content, format and historical backdrop of Qiaopi. The pupils learned that Qiaopi served as a dual-purpose medium combining family correspondence and monetary remittances sent home by overseas Chinese. These precious documents embody overseas compatriots’ profound attachment to their homeland and families, while bearing witness to the enduring spirit of the Chinese nation passed down from generation to generation.
After learning about Qiaopi’s historical context and cultural connotations, students took part in a special Qiaopi-writing workshop. Equipped with pens and paper, they followed traditional Qiaopi formats to compose personal family letters to their loved ones.
Foshan ASJ has always placed great emphasis on education in fine traditional Chinese culture and the cultivation of patriotic sentiments. This visit not only allowed the spirit of the century-old overseas Chinese school to take root and sprout in the hearts of the young, but also further elevated, through meaningful exchanges, the cultural identity that stems from a shared origin.
Nurture Young Dreams, Pass Down the Legacy. Drawing on Jinan University’s premium educational resources, ASJ Foshan will keep building more practical platforms to guide students to perceive the world, understand society and explore themselves amid real-life experiences. Rooted in their cultural origins, youngsters from Hong Kong and Macao will embrace their missions, growing into new Bay Area youth grounded in patriotism, equipped with global vision and ready to shoulder contemporary responsibilities through inheritance and innovation.
