Discovering the World's Future Through Water Infrastructure

On March 22, coinciding with UN World Water Day, students from the primary division of Ardingly College Zhongshan embarked on an exploratory journey to Zhongshan Dafeng Water Treatment Plant. This interdisciplinary field study integrated IB learner profile attributes with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), transforming every droplet's purification journey into an ecological cipher for developing "Inquirers" and "Caring" global citizens.

01

Wisdom in Miniature丨Macro Insights from Micro Models

The exploration began with interactive 3D hydrological models demonstrating urban water cycles. Through tactile sandbox simulations and water filtration games using layered filtration systems, students physically experienced sediment retention processes. Observing trapped particles in filter meshes sparked their first conceptual understanding: "Water conservation equals ecological preservation" - a fundamental SDG principle materializing through play-based learning.

02

Eco-Revelations at the Intake丨Source Protection as Global Citizenship

At the plant's raw water intake, technicians explained watershed protection challenges.

Learning that 2 billion people face water scarcity worldwide, these principled young minds immediately brainstormed conservation strategies - from reusing rice-washing water for plants to reducing shower durations. Their earnest dialogue revealed developing attributes of open-mindedness and global awareness, transforming abstract SDG concepts into actionable commitments.

03

Alchemy of Purification丨Laboratory Lessons in Global Stewardship

The treatment process tour became a live demonstration of SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Students observed flocculation basins, rapid sand filters, and ozone disinfection systems before constructing miniature purification towers using activated carbon and quartz sand.

As turbid water clarified through their multilayer filters, detailed observation records showcased inquiry skills, while iterative filter media adjustments demonstrated risk-taking - both essential IB learner attributes in action.

04

Microcosm of Quality Assurance丨Data Dance in Water Testing

In the analytical laboratory, digital pH meters and chlorine residual testers transformed students into water chemists. Watching test strips change color and digital readouts fluctuate, they discovered the concrete science behind SDG implementation. This hands-on experience with titration and turbidity measurement revealed how chemical monitoring translates to sustainable development practice.

05

Hydrophobic Adventure丨Fluid Dynamics Meets Teamwork

The program culminated in a lotus effect experiment mimicking natural water repellency.

Collaborative teams engineered hydrophobic surfaces using biomimetic materials, discussing potential applications in eco-friendly rainwear.

Through prototype testing and structural optimization, students naturally demonstrated IB's collaborative principle - some groups focused on material selection while others perfected angles of inclination, collectively enhancing water runoff efficiency.

SDGs Insights

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by UN member states in 2015 chart a course for harmonious human-planet coexistence by 2030.

At ACZS, water conservation pledges evolve into daily habits, while inquiry projects expand global perspectives. What we witness transcends scientific literacy - it's the emergence of conscientious global stewardship. This epitomizes transformative education: nurturing each child into a sustainability torchbearer, guided by IB philosophy and shared human aspirations, illuminating our collective path forward through individual sparks of change.
