Primary Years: Scientific Discoveries｜小学部：科学发现

This week in Grade 1, students strengthened their numerical exploration skills by beginning their journey into fractions, using real-life examples to understand parts of a whole. In Literacy, they explored the world of verb tenses, learning to recognise regular past tense verbs such as like – liked and play – played. In Unit of Inquiry, the new topic of jobs and professions was introduced through inquiry questions and engaging reading materials, sparking curiosity and discussion.

This week in Grade 2, students practiced creating surveys to gather data for graphs. They made displays to show what they want to be when they grow up. These activities helped them think about how they can contribute to their community in the future.

This week in Grade 3, the students have been unearthing the three primary states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases! They’ve been eagerly uncovering the distinctive features of each state, while also delving into the intriguing particle structures that define them.

Grade 4 students have recently covered a wide range of scientific ideas. They first learnt about atoms, elements, and compounds, and then continued to learn about solids, liquids and gases. Students used Lego, among other things, to explore and experiment with the ideas they encountered.

Grade 5 students explored the concept of sharing the planet and identified its connection to numerous scientific discoveries. They discussed how understanding our environment can lead to innovations that benefit both people and nature.

During this busy preparation phase leading to the Grade 6A students’ final exhibition, some groups have taken the opportunity to utilise the support of our specialist team to further explore topics like international tariffs, global freshwater distribution, and the factors contributing to ecosystem damage.

In Grade 6B, students delved into their final exhibition projects by enhancing their research skills with a focus on data and graphs. They explored the scientific principles behind data representation, which not only enriched their understanding but also prepared them to effectively communicate their findings during the upcoming exhibition.

This week, students further developed their model-making skills using recyclable materials. Additionally, some explored the world of logo design by researching iconic brands (such as  Apple and Nike to analyse how shapes and colours convey messages. They also used iPads to gather visual references and brainstorm ideas for their unique designs.

This week, G1 to G4 students delved into "How We Organise Ourselves," exploring various roles in collaborative performances. They discovered how teamwork enhances musical expression. Meanwhile, G5 and G6 focused on their final exhibition performance, highlighting creativity and innovation in their presentations.

This week in ICT, students from Grades 1 through 6 engaged in diverse digital media activities across grade levels, exploring scientific discoveries. They practiced digital writing, comprehending signs conveyed through text and images, and editing, modifying, and enhancing images. Additionally, they utilised lines and shapes in vector drawing within the Notes app. These activities fostered creativity, enhanced digital skills, and deepened their understanding of how media effectively communicates scientific concepts.

Through exploration, Grade 1 students uncovered the secrets of spiders. They learned that spider silk is incredibly strong—even stronger than steel! Scientists are studying spider silk to develop new materials, such as durable ropes and even medical bandages. Spiders also benefit us by preying on harmful insects.

The Reading & Art Club UP and LP students hosted their very own mini book club! Each student searched the library for books featuring famous inventors, scientists and other important historical figures. Then, in groups, students discussed the amazing discoveries they made.

The Grade 4 students observed the existence of forms of triangles in structures such as bridges and iron towers, 1so as to understand the names of each part of the triangle. Through the experiment of using small sticks to build triangles, we can intuitively feel that the sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side, and explore its crucial role in maintaining the stable structure of an object.  

Meanwhile, the Grade 2  students embarked on an exciting mathematical journey, exploring numbers up to ten thousand, discovering new counting units. They were also introduced to the abacus as a tool to represent numbers up to 1000. Through hands-on practice, they discovered how this ancient tool works efficiently. They also explored its cultural significance, understanding how it has been used for centuries. This experience helped them appreciate the ingenuity of early mathematical tools.

Upper primary students have been looking at how sports science can help improve athletes and our own performance in sport. Teams looked at their movements as a group in a game situation, sports analysis and how individuals move when performing an action, biomechanics.
