THE DEBATE
The semi-finals of the online English Debate
A semi-final of the English Debate took place respectively on Feb 21st and 28th. The two rounds of competition went quite smoothly on line.
As Allen put it, it was so incredible that a debate should be held on line!
The competitors were supposed to argue over the topic “ Which one plays a more important role in preventing the current epidemic, unity or science and technology?”
Some debaters were arguing heatedly in front of their laptop cameras, making gestures or waving their pencils in the air; others were timidly calling up their courage to speak... Jin, vice principal, was hosting the debate with a smile.
This was a wonderful experience
The Debate
Nebula:
Since I was assigned the topic on the 17th , I have been discussing online with other team members on every evening since the 18th . First, we came up with many ideas and examples, and then we held a trial debate with two of our team members acting as the opponent team and tried to improve our thoughts. Finally, we helped each other by examining everyone’s drafts.
Some teachers had publicized this debate in the we-chat group for all the students. Therefore, many students logged in to watch the competition on the days when semi-finals took place. I had thought I could have counted the number of the audience online with only one hand, but seeing my whole screen was filled with students’ zoom accounts, I felt excited.
I was the No.1 debater of our team, so I was supposed to give our opening remarks and I did a very good job. However, the subsequent free debate revealed that I was far from being fluent or eloquent, making my individual and team scores greatly lag behind.
I was extremely embarrassed!
After the debate, we agreed that we would have to practise speaking a great deal of English.
We appreciated the hard work done by those teachers and students who acted as judges and scorekeepers.
Semi-final was a wonderful experience. Let’s work harder for a better debate next time.
Admit that your opponent is stronger, so work harder to improve yourself.
The Debate
Allen:
Feb 18th saw the second semi-final.
As the No.4 debater, my major responsibility was to summarize the viewpoints presented by our side. As an old saying goes, plans can never take every change into consideration. In other words, however well-prepared we were for the debate, we still couldn’t follow our opponent’s divergent thinking during the competition.
During the debate, our opponents presented many viewpoints that we had never thought of. As the chief debaters of both sides were strong, we were unconsciously arguing over an increasingly wider variety of topics, ranging from“unity comes before the heaven”, “Which one can save mankind, technology or God?” to “Which came into being first, the chicken or the egg?”
Sam Cai, the No.4 debater and the team leader of the con side, listed a lot of social phenomena, such as the spread of misunderstanding caused by “Shuanghuanglian oral liquid”, the massacre of innocent pet animals due to people’s ignorance and misunderstanding, and even human tragedies caused by “cultural revolutions” that lasted for a decade.
I thought to myself that perhaps that was what was referred to as “the psychology of group unconsciousness. But what’s the English for that term? It was so profound!
As the No.4 debater of my side, I tried to sum up both sides’viewpoints by putting forward the most intensely debated topic “ignorance”. All rumors originate from ignorance and misunderstanding. All these result negatively from the so-called “unity”, but they are not in line with the essence of unity; Science and technology may also cause misunderstanding and rumors, and similarly, such negative results are not what science and technology is meant for in the first place.
Having prepared for the debate for a long time, I was feeling a little disappointed because many viewpoints and thoughts we had worked out were not put to use.
Therefore, the best way to improve yourself is to admit that your opponent is stronger.
