暑假伊始,校园并未静下来。“千帆夏令营”如火如荼地展开,来自校内外近百名小学和初中学生齐聚狄邦华曜的校园,共度十天九晚火热的夏日时光。于在校生而言,这是步入新学年的过渡期,怀着对下学期即将开展的千帆项目研修课的憧憬,留在学校提前过把小瘾;而趁着假期前来体验国际化教育的外校生们更是给予了“原来课还能这样上”的高度评价。

 


每到夏天,营地的选择多到眼花缭乱,狄邦华曜选择潜心打磨并推出千帆营,校内顶尖硕博教师团队以“志趣探索”和“学术探索”为核心,合力为营地学员们奉上了一场精彩的学术盛宴——不是埋头学,而是玩中学,就如开头所写的那样。就读于苏州某公立学校,因和狄邦华曜学姐Sara有同样的动物保护志向而来到夏校,Daisy提到:“这里的教育和教学很创新,会让我打开思路,思考用不一样的方式解决问题,课堂上学到的内容可以很灵活地运用在生活中。”


十天时间,校园内是孩子们投入阅读的安静,是课题讨论的热烈,是体育竞技的汗水,是凝神探究的专注。夏天永远是最丰盛的时节,从夏校打开的窗户中,孩子们看到了不一样的盛夏风景。


While most summer schools focus on academics, the Qianfan Summer Camp offers a unique experience that benefits students for life in just ten days.


Imagine unraveling a crime scene to catch the real culprit, journeying back to the Tang Dynasty to to create murder mystery stories, and exploring the school grounds to find hidden treasures. These are just a few of the exciting activities at the Qianfan Summer Camp.



As summer begins, the Qianfan Summer Camp kicks off with nearly a hundred elementary and junior high students from inside and outside Huayao Collegiate. This intense ten-day, nine-night camp gives current students a sneak peek into the upcoming Qianfan Program courses, while visiting students experience international education firsthand, often exclaiming, "Classes can be like this!"



Every summer, parents are bombarded with countless camp options. Huayao Collegiate stands out by refining and launching the Qianfan Camp, led by top-notch faculty. Their focus is on "Interest Exploration" and "Academic Inquiry," turning learning into a fun and engaging experience.


Daisy, a public school student from Suzhou, joined the camp because of her passion for animal conservation, inspired by a HC graduate. She noted, "The education here is very innovative. It encourages me to think about solving problems in different ways, and what I learn in class can be applied flexibly in real life."


For ten days, the campus buzzes with activities—from intense discussions and reading to athletic competitions and investigative inquiries. Through this immersive environment, children experience a uniquely vibrant summer.

“现在是夏天,这里是营地,应该让孩子们学得开心些。”STEAM课老师Tasha博士如是说。她的课堂总被孩子们期待着,他们先后在“犯罪现场”收集指纹、提取DNA、分析毛发、布料、足迹和血液,十足过了一把法证瘾。

 

面对横跨小学和初中段的学生,如何让课程吸引所有学龄段的学生成为了Tasha博士最早思考的课题。“每个人都对神秘和未知着迷”,她想到学生们爱看的侦探漫画和电影,甚至很小的孩子就开始阅览“谁从饼干罐里偷走了饼干”的“悬疑”绘本,最终她选定了主题,并将科学背景融入课程中,果然让孩子们深感兴奋有趣。

 


创意写作课负责人吴老师的课令人惊艳,最直观的体现在于孩子们在偶遇吴老师时都会问上一句“今天有语文课吗?我还想写作文。”在课上,孩子们回到唐朝,剖析长安城的建筑布局,厘清那段久远的历史,随后创建角色,设立主题,以公元752年上巳节虢国夫人游春为契机,创造剧本,写出自己的故事。

 

吴老师纠正道:“这其实不是作文,当我们说到写作文,它实则包含了许多隐形要求,最终写出的是一个符合别人期待的故事。”但在吴老师的课堂上,孩子们放飞想象力,宫女、刺客、商贩、丫鬟、流浪汉都成为了笔下的主角,每个人带着自己的秘密与任务,随着主线发展慢慢推进。而吴老师给的,便是抓手,比如三年后爆发的安史之乱,主角会随着唐玄宗流亡到成都,还是坚定地驻守在长安城?根据这些抓手,学生的故事得以在唐朝的背景下活灵活现。

 


吴老师是狄邦华曜高中部的语文负责人,尽管没有教过低龄段学生,但深知孩子们大多抵触写作这件事:“自己创造会更快乐一点,无论符合逻辑与否,写出自己的故事会让学生不再害怕写作。”在这里,语文不再有标准答案,它回归了语言的本质——思想的传达和交流。

 

这样的授课方式显然与传统课堂大相径庭,学生做得多,而老师讲得少,在引导学生进行实操步骤的过程中,学生不断发挥主观能动性,成为课堂的主人,这就是探究式学习和项目式学习的优势。在数学课老师郭异看来,这样的学习方式一直以来都是学校强调并推进的一点。正是在这样的教学方式下,上学期他带的AP学生历经半年时间完成了14篇主题各异、与生活息息相关的万字数学论文,今年AP微积分BC均分更是高达4.73,远超全球的3.92,达到了超高的学术标准。

 


在千帆营,无论是数学课上通过让孩子们制定性价比的午餐计划、制定合理的迪斯尼游览计划来引入建模思维;通过寻宝游戏利用数学知识来解答包括学校旗杆有多高的现实问题,还是物理课上通过让孩子们研究校园电梯从1楼到顶楼的做功来直观理解能量的转换;英语课上孩子们以销售物品的方式来锻炼口语,抑或是STEAM课将现实中的各种探案手段平移至实验桌上,探究式+项目式教学归根结底架起了课堂知识与现实运用的桥梁,打通教室和外面的世界,从而激发学习兴趣,埋下专业发展的种子。

 


“兴趣是需要培养的,有的事情还没看到时,你并不知道自己有无兴趣。”营地负责人,“千帆计划”项目执行总监,狄邦华曜中学数学学科组长郭惠老师引用了著名数学家丘成桐的语录。而千帆营的意义就在于,为学生了解到更多的未知领域提供机会,在拓宽视野的同时挖掘兴趣爱好,为终身学习、终身探索打下长足动力。


Dr. Tasha, the STEAM class teacher, emphasizes making learning fun. Her classes on forensics involve collecting fingerprints, analyzing DNA, and more. Dr. Tasha's approach, inspired by detective stories, engages students of all ages by integrating scientific concepts into intriguing lessons.


Ms. Wu, the creative writing teacher, takes students on a journey back to the Tang Dynasty. They explore historical contexts, create characters, and write their own stories. Ms. Wu's method encourages students to unleash their imagination, turning writing into an enjoyable and creative process.



This teaching style, a stark contrast to traditional classrooms, emphasizes hands-on activities and student initiative. Inquiry-based and project-based learning bridges the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world applications, igniting a passion for learning and planting seeds for future exploration.



At the Qianfan Camp, students apply mathematical concepts to real-life problems, understand energy conversion through hands-on experiments, and improve their oral skills in English by selling items. These methods make learning engaging and relevant.




从千帆营看千帆计划,

难得的是深入思考的能力

7月10日,千帆营迎来了结营仪式暨成果展,向家长直观展现十天来孩子们在营地的成长。通往剧院的廊道两旁架满了各小组STEAM课的实验板报,指纹、脚印、“伪造的”笔迹、PH值检验结果、显微镜观察到的细菌外观等都陈列在上,还有小组将这些实验在现实中的运用意义一一陈述。舞台上,学员们展示了舞蹈课上所学的兔子舞、艺术课上完成的陶艺作品,而数学、STEAM、英语、创意写作、物理、计算机和体育等学科老师们也带着学员就各门课的学习成果上台汇报。



除了兴趣的培养,学员还能从千帆营中收获什么?郭异老师带来了题为“Think a little deeper(思考得更深入一点)”的汇报。他为高年级的学员留下了一道没有答案的题:数学中存在“乘法回位数”的情况,即ab×cd=dc×ba,例如14×82=28×41,你还能写出多少符合情况的算式?它的规律是什么?你是否能找到三位数的情况?成果展上,学员们带来了精彩的解答思路。在郭老师看来,尽管问题没有标准答案,这却是能够让孩子们深入思考的一个机会。“短短的十天时间,相比起知识的积累,我更希望能够为学生建立一个深入思考的契机和习惯,去研究一些平时没有想过的问题。”


不仅是理科,人文社科同样注重思考。
“网文可能算是近些年兴起的一种虚构类作品,你觉得网文算文学吗?为什么?”

“你觉得文学有广义和侠义之分吗?”

“AI、脑机接口、虚拟现实,这些技术很可能会改变未来我们获取信息的方式,你觉得读书,尤其是深度阅读这件事对现阶段的人类还有意义吗?”

……


很难猜到,以上问题的提问场景竟然是营地期间的一堂图书馆课。对于平日鲜少需要去“多想一想”的学生而言,这样的思考机会难能可贵。这也是物理老师唐若愚所能感受到的狄邦华曜在读生和校外生的差异所在。尽管知识层面可能“卷不过”公立学校学生,但令唐老师深感成就的一点在于,本校生针对具体场景下分析问题的能力会更强一些,换言之,学生们不是套用公式,他们真的有思维能力和思考过程。



采访前不久,唐老师刚结束一堂物理课,课上孩子们需要搭建一个手摇发电机。她问道“过程中你能识别出哪些能量发生了转换?”本校生乐意拿着模型边上台边给同学讲解,而具备丰富知识积累的公立学校学生仅仅提到了“切割磁感线”。唐老师解释道:“这不是实际的现象,还是能感觉到学生在套用课本知识。”反之,本校生在观察、在总结,并在沉浸式地享受思考的过程,“这种与知识的融合感、接受知识的归属感,比记知识要好得多。”


郭惠老师再次引用了丘成桐的语录:“兴趣的大小和了解的深浅也有关系, 懂得越多才知兴趣所在。”因此仅仅拓宽视野还不够,还需加深学习。千帆营预示着秋季学期狄邦华曜千帆计划的正式启动,如果说短暂的十天重点帮助学生拓宽学科视野,那么千帆计划的启动便意味着学生将获得充裕的时间,在每周的千帆研修课上,进一步思考,进一步加深学习。

The humanities and social sciences classes also emphasize critical thinking. Students debate the nature of literature and the impact of technology on reading, engaging with complex concepts.



Physics teacher Mr. Tang Ruo Yu finds that HC scholars, while not always as knowledgeable as their public school peers, excel in problem-solving and critical thinking. This highlights the school's focus on fostering genuine cognitive skills.

营地开展期间每日和孩子们共处的狄邦华曜蔡芳总校长收获了诸多孩子对营地的好评,不仅是因为注重探究的课程设计让孩子们感受到“科学与人文的张力”,体验到“艺术和体育的魅力”,美味的伙食、舒适的寄宿生活更是被孩子们津津乐道。卓越的营地体验的背后是狄邦华曜千帆营全体工作人员付诸的努力:


每日,食堂高品质的自助三餐强调营养均衡;2~4人间的宿舍有中央空调提供恒温体感,居住环境干净舒适又宽敞;孩子们的导师与宿管老师无缝对接,令学生感受到24小时的温暖陪伴;



不仅如此,学校核心团队全程驻守校园,学部校长等管理层老师从早到晚长达十几小时的轮流值班,老师与营员充分的沟通交流和得到及时解决的学生诉求体现了营地的精细化管理;


更可贵的,是在繁忙紧凑的日程中导师为确保夏校教学质量和师生安全而开展的两日一次的复盘会,和学科老师对课程的实时优化和调整。


此次千帆营,四个班级横跨小初学龄段的学生学习的是相同的主题,如何让相差5岁的学生听懂同一个课题?这尤其考验老师的授课功力,全程双语教学之外,老师边上课边有针对性地改教案的情况时有发生。



郭异老师在教学过程中发现,年龄最大的D班学生明显更倾向于理论式学习,而在课程前期活动的部分略显无精打采,于是他做出针对性调整,同样的话题给到AB两班的案例会更简单直观,而CD两班则会在案例探究时融入理论证明等流程;


为了激发学生的写作动力,吴老师也在后期的创意写作课上安排了互读互评环节,让孩子们以读者身份在卡片上留下对故事的评价,不仅满足作者对作品被阅读的期待,更以正向激励的方式让学生在写作中获得成就感;


物理对小学生而言尤其抽象,为此唐老师选择了关乎文明发展又连接了物理学许多章节的重要桥梁“能量”作为主题,并针对低龄学生在其中安排了许多动手和观察的课堂小活动,比如让孩子们排成一排一起唱歌,传递测音计并观察发声现象,通过一个个小活动把问题层层拨开,最终引导孩子们形成逻辑。“从第一天到第十天,如果孩子们没有得到好的激发和探索,他们很快就会遗忘,但如果到最后一天还能说出所学内容,说明课程形成了深刻的印象。”唐老师说。而好奇心、探索欲、归演、分析、表达、小组合作、领导力等众多能力便在探究期间得到充分发展。

As the Qianfan Camp concludes, teachers prepare for the upcoming Qianfan Program courses, eager to continue providing high-quality education. The success of the camp reaffirms Huayao Collegiate's commitment to offering enriching experiences that broaden horizons, cultivate friendships, and foster a love for learning.

当把问题抛给老师们时,他们竟不约而同地感谢了此次夏校。于老师们而言,这是一次接触多元化学生的机会,夏校让他们得知不同阶段、不同背景的学生分别需要怎样的资源和营养,学生面临着哪些困难而他们又该如何提供帮助。“能够提前了解学生,我们就能更好地帮助即将来到我们狄邦华曜的学生去适应。”郭异老师说。而一直带高中学生的唐老师和吴老师,也深感累有所获,十天过去已然熟知该使用怎样的教学策略,融入哪些教学方法,来启迪低龄段孩子们的思维,丰富学习经历。


在老师们看来,营地最为重要的不止是授课本身,而是一个机会,一个与同龄人、同好之间互动交流的机会。郭异老师此前有多次参与狄邦营地的经验,他强调,学生参加营地最不可或缺的体验就是与他人交友,这也是他心中夏校和营地真正意义上有别于普通课程的闪光点,因此他总是不厌其烦地提醒孩子们多勇敢地和他人交流讨论。



“说不定你在营地里交到的朋友会伴随你一生。在我之前参加过的学术营里,有六七年级的孩子在营地里交到了朋友,到了大学依然保持着密切的联系,这样的例子不在少数,而千帆营就给了我们的孩子这样的机会。”郭老师说。


十日的同吃同宿,从陌生到熟悉,孩子们和校外的同龄人探讨新鲜的话题、热爱的事物、进行学术合作,建立了深刻的“革命友谊”。狄邦华曜五年级在校生Alex更是对着我们的镜头热情洋溢地说道:“我交到了好多朋友,非常希望他们快点来我们学校!”



千帆营圆满落幕,老师们正在紧锣密鼓地筹备千帆研修课的教学计划,期待在即将到来的秋季学期与狄邦华曜学生和家长正式见面。此次千帆营所获得的诸多好评更令我们坚定为广大学生家庭提供高品质营地和前沿国际化教育深度体验的决心。未来,我们将持续推出千帆夏校和冬令营,期待更多孩子在探究式和项目式学习中拓宽视野,探索新知,收获友谊,享受成长。


When the question of what the Qianfan Camp offers beyond academic skills was posed to the teachers, they surprisingly expressed gratitude for the summer school experience. For the educators, this was a prime opportunity to engage with a diverse group of students. The summer program illuminated the varied resources and nourishment required by students at different stages and from different backgrounds, revealing the challenges students face and guiding the teachers on how best to offer assistance. "As teachers, being able to get to know the students beforehand allows us to better assist the incoming students at Huayao Collegiate in adapting to their new environment," said Teacher Guo Yi. Even Teachers Tang and Wu, who typically instruct high school students, felt that their efforts were rewarded. By the end of the ten days, they had gained insight into the appropriate teaching strategies and methods to employ in order to stimulate the minds of younger students and enrich their learning experiences.




From the perspective of the teachers, the most significant aspect of the camp goes beyond mere instruction—it provides a unique opportunity for interaction and exchange among peers and those with similar interests. Teacher Guo Yi, who has participated in HC camps multiple times before, underscores the importance of social bonding for students. He believes that the most indispensable part of attending a camp is the chance to make friends, which sets summer schools and camps apart from regular classes in his view. It is this social aspect that he considers the true highlight of such programs, prompting him to constantly encourage the children to boldly engage in conversations and discussions with others.


"As it turns out, the friends you make at camp might stay with you for a lifetime. From my previous experiences at academic camps, there are instances where students from grades six and seven formed friendships that remained strong even when they reached university, and such cases are not uncommon. The Qianfan Camp affords our students precisely these kinds of opportunities," says Teacher Guo.


After ten days of living and dining together, the students progressed from strangers to familiar companions. They engaged with their peers from outside their usual circles, discussing fresh topics, sharing their passions, and collaborating academically, forging deep bonds akin to "comrades-in-arms" friendships. Alex, a fifth-grade student at Huayao Collegiate, enthusiastically shared with us, "I've made so many friends, and I really hope they come to our school soon!"


As the Qianfan Camp draws to a successful close, the teachers are already hard at work preparing the curriculum for the upcoming Qianfan Program courses. They look forward to meeting the students and parents of Huayao Collegiate in the autumn semester. The overwhelming positive feedback from the camp has only strengthened our commitment to providing high-quality camp experiences and cutting-edge international education to families. Moving forward, we will continue to offer the Qianfan Summer School and Winter Camps, anticipating that more children will broaden their horizons, discover new knowledge, cultivate friendships, and enjoy the process of growth through inquiry-based and project-oriented learning.
