Our students have completed a review of our sports progress so far this term. Please enjoy their updates below.
On Wednesday 18th September 2024, we had our first volleyball match of our SISAC Volleyball Season against Wellington, it was an away game. Our squad consisted of players from Years 9-11 and our captain was Williams Z from Year 9. We went in knowing it was going to be a very difficult game, however, as we started to play we realised we had a great chance of winning, which resulted in the start of our season with a huge 2-0 win. Throughout the game we had some ups and downs, for example communication issues, serve misses and unnecessary net touches, however as a team we pushed through, kept the positive energy, and secured the win! A funny incident from that game came when we were close to winning the second set. Ray asked Mr. Wyatt while he was still on the court playing, “Wait Mr. Wyatt, do we go back home after we win or do we play another set?” That is how confident we were in the second set!
On the Monday 23rd September, we had our second game against SMIC, and it was a home game. Our squad consisted of the same players however we had lost our captain, who was injured and could not play, but this didn’t have a single negative impact on our squad and energy. As our captain we had Lloyd W from Year 10. Again, we went into the match unsure if we would be able to win. As the first set progressed we started making stupid mistakes like serve misses, and miscommunications, which resulted in us losing the first set. A huge thing was at home there was sunlight on the court which was a disadvantage to us however it later became an advantage to us. Moreover, we had pressure that we had to win the second set. Again, we were down in the second set making stupid mistakes and at that moment we were all thinking this game was a loss. We went on to win the second set due to some great serves which got us 8 consecutive points taking us from 17 to 25 and winning the second set. Now we were preparing to play the third set which was only up to 15, we got on the court, a horrible start for us and we were down 2-9, however Kevin C from Year 10 got some great serves in and brought us up to 7-9. We still kept making mistakes and that resulted in us losing the whole match. An unfortunate defeat, if only we had Williams…
The following Wednesday 25th of September, we had our third game against Dulwich College and we were playing away. Our squad was all the players from Years 9-11 except for Lloyd W who got a fever and Williams Z who was still injured, which meant we didn’t have 2 of our best players, yet we still went in with a positive attitude. The first set started and we were serving first, we got 8 consecutive serves in and the score was 8-0. The set went on great with some great digs, sets and spikes. One highlight was Eli T from Year 11 who made a great receive which was basically magical, the ball navigated its way through the poles on the ceiling without touching it and it won us a point. As well as that, Victor H from Year 11 made a great receive, the ball got up from a spike from Dulwich and it went almost to the other court however Victor was like Spiderman, jumped and got the ball back to the court where someone put it over. With that we won the set, our energy was high and positive. The second set started, Dulwich were serving first, they got 7 consecutive serves in and then we finally got one up and got a point, we got serves in and we were almost equal, however in the second set they did some tips which we couldn’t receive and made some net touches from our side as well, moreover some miscommunications as well which resulted in us losing the second set. We did not dare to lose the positive, energetic and winning spirit, and we played the third set up to 15. We started serving and we got in 7 consecutive serves. We limited their serving streak to 2 serves and continued to get points, and we won the set, resulting in another big W! We were so pumped and hyped up after that game and this proved that we didn’t need our best players for anymore matches (just a joke).
Overall, the season is going well so far, 2 wins and 1 loss and as a team we feel we have a fair chance on entering the cup. We have a hard game coming up the Thursday after Golden Week against Concordia and its at home, but it’s fine till then we get our star players back and we have the full team ready for action!
