At Huayao Collegiate, Emily Fang (G11), driven by her passion for art and creativity, brought together a group of like-minded students to co-found the HuaMu Drawing Club (formerly OC Drawing Club). This club serves as both a hub for creative expression and a launching pad for members' artistic exploration.

The HuaMu Drawing Club emphasizes both individual creativity and teamwork, integrating each member’s unique talents into the collective vision. Under Emily’s leadership, it has become a platform to hone comic art skills, foster creative exchange, and inspire members to pursue excellence while contributing to a vibrant, open culture at Huayao Collegiate.

画幕绘社的起源可以追溯到Emily Fang在九年级时的一次偶然观察——目睹其他学者自主创办的社团的活跃景象后，她萌生了自己主导社团的想法：创建一个平台，让对原创人物漫画充满热情的同学们能够汇聚一堂，共同分享创意和激发灵感。

The HuaMu Drawing Club traces its origins to Emily Fang’s ninth-grade year, when she noticed the vibrant activities of other student-led clubs. Inspired, she envisioned founding a club where students passionate about original character comics could share their ideas and spark inspiration together.

This vision quickly gained support from friends and encouragement from mentors, Mr. Frank Zhang and Ms. Crystal Wang. In this positive environment, the HuaMu Drawing Club officially took shape, aiming to provide a space for comic artists to collaborate and grow, while also helping members gain experiences valuable for future university applications.

As president, Emily worked alongside vice president Ella Wang (G11) to establish a systematic creation process. Drawing inspiration from animation studios, they adopted an assembly-line approach, dividing tasks such as scriptwriting, storyboarding, rough drafts, and line art to improve efficiency.

Though faced with challenges like a shortage of members and technical hurdles, Emily persisted. She initiated internal training to enhance skills and fostered a culture of mutual learning and support. Her efforts not only strengthened the club’s cohesion but also transformed it into a more professional and efficient creative team.

Emily Fang: "As president of the HuaMu Drawing Club, I plan activities, manage the club, and serve as the main artist, designing storyboards and drawing scenes. My goal in founding the club was to unite people with common interests to create our own world. I hope our works will one day become well-known at HC."

The HuaMu Drawing Club thrives on collaboration, with members supporting each other through every stage of the creative process. When disagreements arise, they resolve them through open discussions, ensuring the integration of diverse perspectives. Vice President Ella Wang helped expand the club by attracting new members, even from outside the school, who brought fresh ideas.

Ella shared, "Artists can sometimes feel isolated when immersed in their own inspirations. My friend, though introverted, consistently offers new insights that help us overcome challenges."

The club’s core value is inclusivity. While most members are accustomed to working independently, they find that when they collaborate, they inspire one another and create something greater than the sum of their parts. To foster a relaxed and enjoyable creative environment, the club organizes activities like snack-sharing sessions and anniversary celebrations, balancing the intensity of the creative process with moments of fun.

More importantly, whether facing challenges in their work or personal academic struggles, members always support one another, tackling difficulties together.

Once the HuaMu Drawing Club gathered passionate members, the next challenge was to create an original comic with deep, unique narratives. To give their characters a rich, dynamic stage, the members decided to build an entirely new fantasy world, serving as the foundation for their stories.

Cecilia Han (G11), a founding member, played a key role in shaping this world. She blended Western fantasy with the backdrop of the Second Industrial Revolution, creating a universe where supernatural powers coexist with industrial progress, providing endless inspiration for the club’s storytelling. The club members built upon this foundation, cumulatively designing over 16,000 words of plot content.

Cecilia carefully crafted the story’s framework, ensuring its coherence while encouraging each member to contribute their creativity. As a result, the HuaMu Drawing Club’s comics reflect both the unique artistic styles and the combined enthusiasm of its members.

Cecilia Han: "As a founding member, I focus on plot design and management. The club started from a desire to create and express ourselves through comics. I enjoy exchanging ideas with scholars from different backgrounds, and even if few people appreciate our work now, I believe we’ll connect with more like-minded individuals who share our passion."

除了与外部机构的合作，Alice Du还承担了与指导老师沟通的重要任务。她积极与老师们交流社团的发展计划和需求，争取到了老师们的宝贵支持和建议，这些支持对社团的稳步发展起到了不可或缺的作用。

Creativity is just the first step; sharing that creativity with a wider audience is equally important. Alice Du (G11), another founding member, spearheads the HuaMu Drawing Club’s outreach efforts. She actively seeks collaborations with both internal and external partners to expand the club’s visibility.

One of Alice’s innovative ideas was to collaborate with the school library to establish a comic sales and reading corner, showcasing the club’s works and offering a space for campus comic enthusiasts. From design and production to pricing and distribution, Alice meticulously handled every detail, even proposing discounts to encourage purchases.

In addition to her outreach efforts, Alice coordinated with teachers to secure support and guidance, ensuring the club’s steady growth.

Alice Du: "As a founding member, my main role is coordinating merchandise production, comic printing, and material purchases. Seeing our sketches turn into printed comics fills me with pride. I believe our club will continue to grow, and I’ll keep working hard to contribute to its success."

Today, the HuaMu Drawing Club is a vibrant part of Huayao Collegiate. Emily is optimistic about the club’s future and has plans to elevate its creative output while accelerating the release of new works. The club also intends to establish social media accounts to broaden its online presence and share members' creations and activities with a wider audience. Participation in the school’s Art Week is also planned, providing further opportunities to connect with other enthusiasts and expand the club’s influence.

Huayao Collegiate actively encourages students to explore their creativity and passion through founding their own clubs, offering resources, facilities, and guidance to help them develop leadership skills and showcase their talents. These activities not only enrich campus culture but also teach students valuable skills in teamwork and time management.
