Last week, eight students from the China Region, including our student Lorna from NAIS Pudong, had the thrilling opportunity to visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA. This visit was a reward for their participation in the international Nord Anglia and MIT competition, where they submitted video presentations highlighting their innovative ideas in their respective fields. With numerous entries, the judging process was competitive, focusing on criteria such as passion, creativity, and the potential impact of their proposed solutions.
After what felt like an eternity of anticipation, the students finally arrived at the MIT museum, joining over 70 other students from our global network of schools. They met with MIT Curiosity Correspondents Abbi and Nolas, as well as plasma specialist Dr Shon Mackie (from last year’s MIT Challenge) and Dr Loïcka Baille, who elaborated on her recent MIT abstract about her fascinating (and adorable) work with Cuddling Penguins.
Throughout the trip, participants engaged in a variety of activities and workshops across the MIT campus:
Simulated Climate Change Conference
Teams collaborated to devise effective strategies for reducing global temperatures, engaging in meaningful discussions on environmental sustainability.
Tour of a Nuclear Reactor
Students delved into the intricacies of nuclear energy with Dr Shon Mackie.
Interactive Workshops
Participants explored topics ranging from worm research to high-speed imaging of water droplets, as well as basic soldering and electronics. It was an enriching experience in the realm of science.
Talk from Koch Institute for Cancer
Students were given a presentation about the cutting-edge techniques and technologies in cancer research.
Admissions Talk
A panel discussion with current undergraduates provided insights into their application experiences and why they chose to apply to MIT. The overwhelming takeaway from this session was to pursue what you love.
Additionally, students enjoyed an exhilarating Questing and Escape Room experience at Boda Borg, an interesting city tour on a Duck Boat, a visit to Harvard, and an MIT night at the museum.
Overall, the experience was incredibly inspiring, providing students with a glimpse into the roles they could potentially hold in the future, utilising their skills to create a positive impact in the world.
The next competition for a trip in 2025 will be announced towards the end of this term for students currently in Year 9 and Year 11, so please keep an eye out for updates in the student bulletins and on school social media.
