The central theme of this year’s Winter Concert was to break down academic silos and merge scholarly knowledge with artistic expression. By engaging in world structure design in geography classes, poetry creation in language arts, and role-playing in drama rehearsals, scholars were able to apply multidisciplinary skills in practical and creative ways. Teachers encouraged personal expression and innovation, allowing each scholar to grow during the preparation process.
"I’ve always wanted to find a way for scholars to not just learn theories in the classroom, but to truly apply that knowledge in practice," said Ms. Sierra Xie, Chief Coordinator for the 2024 Winter Concert and Head of the Creative Arts Department. "Interdisciplinary integration stimulates creativity, develops critical thinking, and lets scholars experience the connections and synergies between subjects."
A standout element was the integration of geography and art. Scholars collaborated to design a large-scale map based on the concert’s narrative, incorporating concepts learned in geography. They envisioned world structures—creating countries, provinces, rivers, and oceans—while teachers encouraged their creative ideas and guided them in weaving knowledge into their designs. The result was a collection of unique, imaginative inner worlds.
The collaboration between language arts and drama was equally impressive. By writing poetry and performing plays, scholars deepened their understanding of texts and explored emotional expression. For example, the first scene featured a powerful verse monologue performed by a scholar playing a mother during the main character’s birth. The emotional delivery inspired literary creativity among their peers.
The Grade 7 scholars initially planned to perform with recorders alone, but Mr. Matt Butler, the concert director and drama teacher, saw an opportunity to enhance their performance. Singing and dancing were incorporated into the piece, giving each scholar a chance to shine and showcase their varied talents.
