At Gaoteng, every child's passion is treasured. When Hank, a Grade 9 student from Gaoteng American High School, turned his burning gaze towards the climate crisis, an enlightenment about responsibility and growth began. We firmly believe that education is not just the transmission of knowledge, but also the building of bridges for each unique soul to connect with the world. Today, let's witness how Gaoteng's philosophy of "interest-driven growth" shines in real-world issues through the insights of this "Shanghai Climate Week" youth representative.

When Melting Glaciers Meet Youth Enthusiasm: 

An Intergenerational Dialogue


瑞士联邦政府科技文化中心(Swissnex)的玻璃幕墙内,一群优秀青少年正围坐在一起。在这场由上海气候周与Swissnex联合发起的“气候公园下午茶”中,瑞士科技文化中心CEO Philippe Roesle(何辉)与青年代表们展开了一场关于地球未来的头脑风暴。从多语言传播环保理念的挑战,到零碳建筑的跨国合作;从冰川消融对雪豹栖息地的威胁,到滑雪产业的气候困局——这场横跨政策、科技与文化的对话。在本次对话中,Hank作为青年代表之一第一次触摸到气候议题的复杂与真实。 


Inside the glass facade of the Swissnex Hub for Science, Technology, and Culture, a group of outstanding teenagers sat together. At this "Climate Park Afternoon Tea," jointly initiated by Shanghai Climate Week and Swissnex, the CEO of the Swissnex Hub, Philippe Roesle, engaged in a brainstorming session with the youth representatives about the future of our planet. From the challenges of spreading environmental concepts in multiple languages to transnational cooperation on zero-carbon buildings; from the threat of melting glaciers to the habitats of snow leopards to the climate dilemma of the skiing industry—this dialogue spanned policy, technology, and culture. In this conversation, Hank, as one of the youth representatives, first touched on the complexity and reality of climate issues.

Q1:作为参与本次中瑞气候对话的青年代表,你在活动中提出了"全球气候变暖是否会影响滑雪运动?"。这一思考源于你对哪一具体气候现象的观察?

As a youth representative participating in this Sino-Swiss climate dialogue, you raised the question, "Will global warming affect skiing?" What specific climate phenomenon led you to this thought?


Hank:“我提出这个问题的主要原因是因为出于我对体育的热爱。我总是会从体育方面思考问题。当然,我也是注意到了冰川溶化,雪山上积雪变少,也有其它的一些自身经历。”

 "The main reason I asked this question is because of my love for sports. I always think about issues from a sports perspective. Of course, I also noticed the melting of glaciers, the decreasing snow on mountains, and some of my own experiences."





瑞士联邦森林、雪与景观研究所(WSL)的数据印证了他的观察:过去二十年,瑞士冰川体积缩减超20%。但Philippe Roesle带来的不仅是危机,更是解决方案——瑞士已将“2050碳中和”写入法律,投入20亿瑞士法郎推动能源转型,就连滑雪缆车都开始采用太阳能供电。“气候行动需要像滑雪一样,找到平衡点。”


Data from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) confirmed his observations: over the past two decades, the volume of Swiss glaciers has shrunk by more than 20%. But Philippe Roesle brought not only the crisis but also solutions—Switzerland has enshrined "carbon neutrality by 2050" in law, investing 2 billion Swiss francs to drive energy transformation, and even ski lifts are now powered by solar energy. "Climate action needs to find a balance point, just like skiing."



"提出'滑雪运动气候危机'绝非偶然",Hank的老师揭秘道。在学校的跨学科实践课上,这个爱滑雪的少年用数学和编程破解气候难题。在代数课程里,他用坐标系分析滑雪路线,把雪场坡度变化转化成数学曲线,计算出滑雪场每年雪季缩短的天数;通过计算机课学到的基础编程,老师辅导他编写出自动识别积雪面积的程序,对比十年间瑞士雪山卫星照片的变化。


"Raising the 'climate crisis in skiing' is not a coincidence," Hank's teacher revealed. In the school's interdisciplinary practice class, this skiing enthusiast used mathematics and programming to solve climate puzzles. In algebra class, he analyzed skiing routes with a coordinate system, turning the changes in slope at the ski resort into mathematical curves and calculating the number of days the ski season shortens each year. With basic programming skills learned in computer class, he wrote a program to automatically identify snow-covered areas, comparing changes in satellite images of Swiss mountains over a decade.


Hank:现在每次滑雪都是在收集数据,通过数学公式和简单编程,我发现雪道变短和全球变暖真的有直接联系。


"Now every time I ski, I'm collecting data. Through mathematical formulas and simple programming, I've found a direct link between shorter ski runs and global warming."


正是高藤注重"用数理思维解决现实问题"的教学方式,让这个滑雪少年从雪场的变化中,读懂了地球发出的气候警报。


It was Gaoteng's focus on "using mathematical thinking to solve real-world problems" that allowed this skiing youth to understand the climate warning from the changes on the ski slope.

Hank has demonstrated exceptional environmental leadership and cross-cultural vision. The upcoming campus initiatives highlight Hank's innovative thinking and sense of social responsibility. It is recommended that Hank focus on majors such as Environmental Science, Sustainability, or Public Policy. By taking AP courses in Environmental Science and Statistics, Hank can build a solid academic foundation. Additionally, participating in research programs like Yale Young Global Scholars or MIT Climate CoLab will deepen practical experience. We also hope to expand these actions to community collaboration and connect with university environmental labs or more student organizations to precisely match institutional resources, highlight leadership and global citizenship, and enhance college competitiveness.

What was the most impressive Swiss environmental case or viewpoint in this climate dialogue? What new inspiration does this case offer for your daily environmental practices (for example, at school)?


Hank:“要是说我最深的印象一定是瑞士环保率例是他们在近几年实现了99%低碳环保。可以说是做到了领先!瑞士在低碳环保上做到了带头作用,为了全球的环保尽了份力。”

"If I had to pick the most impressive thing, it would definitely be Switzerland's 99% low-carbon environmental performance. They are truly leading the way and have made a significant contribution to global environmental protection."





当瑞士99%的低碳奇迹震撼Hank时,他首先想到的是高藤的"绿色校园"计划。事实上,他发起的三大环保行动正与学校战略深度契合:

When Hank was struck by Switzerland's 99% low-carbon miracle, the first thing that came to his mind was Gaoteng's "Green Campus" initiative. In fact, the three environmental actions he initiated are deeply aligned with the school's strategy:


· "无痕课桌":每日放学前清理个人区域,零垃圾离场

· "光瓶挑战":得到食堂生物降解餐具研发团队的技术支持

· "电力巡逻队":学生与教师轮值检查教室灯光、空调使用 

· "Zero-Trace Desks": Clearing personal areas before leaving school each day, with zero waste left behind.

· "Bottle Challenge": Supported by the cafeteria's biodegradable tableware R&D team.

· "Power Patrol": Students and teachers take turns checking the use of classroom lights and air conditioning.



通过参加上海气候周,Hank收获颇丰。在与各界代表的交流中,他接触到多元领域的创新视角——当跨领域研讨瑞士气候议题时,他深刻体会到多维视角的启发价值:通过政策制定、旅游业转型、企业协作等维度展开的案例分析,揭示了瑞士气候治理的前瞻性规划。在资料收集过程中,Hank系统掌握了环境保护与气候科学的专业知识体系,完成了从行业认知到系统思维的跨越式提升。


By participating in Shanghai Climate Week, Hank gained a lot. In his interactions with representatives from various fields, he was exposed to innovative perspectives from diverse areas. When discussing Swiss climate issues across fields, he deeply appreciated the value of multidimensional thinking: case analyses from the perspectives of policy-making, tourism transformation, and corporate collaboration revealed the forward-looking planning of Switzerland's climate governance. During the process of collecting materials, Hank systematically mastered the professional knowledge system of environmental protection and climate science, achieving a leap from industry understanding to systematic thinking.


在高藤,每个看似微小的兴趣都可能成长为改变世界的支点。当Hank说出"雪道消失的速度由我们决定"时,他身后站着整个高藤教学支持——这里有允许雪板摩擦声与学术讨论共鸣的校园,有把滑雪轨迹转化为研究数据的智慧系统,更有相信少年热忱能融化现实坚冰的教育信仰。
