At Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong, we believe that where children learn is just as important as what they learn.

This careful design is no coincidence. Research consistently shows that well-considered learning environments have a positive impact on students’ mood, engagement, and concentration. Claire Latané, a professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, highlights in her book Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind how surroundings connected with nature can support children’s mental health. 1


One 2010 study 2 found that students with views of trees and greenery from their classrooms and cafeterias performed better academically. A follow-up 2019 study 3 confirmed the strong link between natural views and student achievement. 


At NAIS Pudong, we see this every day. Our students flourish in a setting where they are encouraged to move, learn in different ways, and benefit from fresh air and natural light. Whether they are collaborating in groups, working independently, or taking a moment to recharge, our students are supported by a campus designed for their success. 



Dr Helen Bunn, Programme Director of Educational and Child Psychology at the University of East London, points out that while overstimulation can hinder learning, the opposite is also true. She highlights the importance of natural light, greenery, good air quality, and freedom of movement to help children concentrate and feel well. 


Our campus also supports pastoral care through design. Learning spaces are intentionally open yet secure, with internal windows and glass doors that help foster a sense of community. Students learn with greater independence while still being connected to their teachers and peers. Whether it is a quiet reading nook in our library, a breakout space for small-group work, or a wide corridor designed for social interaction, every part of our school is crafted with student wellbeing in mind. 



As Mike Alete, Nord Anglia’s Head of Design, puts it: “Good design that focuses on the needs of the child can create spaces where students move more freely while still feeling secure and supported — and it is great to see the creativity this can inspire.”

2010年一项研究2发现,教室与餐厅窗外能看见树木绿植的学生学业表现更优异;2019年的追踪研究3再次证实自然景观与学生成就间的强关联。
