Amid growing global concerns over ecological balance and sustainable development, students from SMCS's High School Department embarked on a two-day ecological field study in Suzhou from October 23 to 24. Centering on the theme of "The Ecological System of Suzhou Gardens," the program combined textbook learning with field investigation, guiding students to explore the ecological design concepts, water self-purification systems, biodiversity, and modern ecological technologies embodied in classical Chinese gardens. Through this immersive experience, students were able to grasp the traditional Chinese philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature. At the start of the journey, they set out with questions in mind —allowing curiosity to lead their observation and exploration, and letting learning unfold through an authentic dialogue with nature.

Learning Through Inquiry
Entering Nature's Classroom

The first step of research-based learning is observation with questions in mind. At the UNESCO World Heritage Site — the Humble Administrator's Garden — students explored the theme of "garden ecosystems," combining ecological principles with the ancient Chinese philosophy of "Harmony between Nature and Humans." They examined how elements such as water, plants, and spatial layout interact to form and sustain a balanced ecological system.

The "underwater forest" of the Humble Administrator's Garden became the focus of their research. Submerged plants maintain the oxygen cycle through photosynthesis, while fish and microorganisms form a closed loop of energy flow and material circulation that enables the pond's self-purification. Students realized that the stability of the garden's ecosystem relies on the dynamic balance among producers, consumers, and decomposers.

As discussions deepened, the focus shifted from "ecological science" to "ecological philosophy." Students observed that the garden embodies the ancient ideal of "harmony between humans and nature" through its design — mountains and waters intertwined, pavilions beside ponds, and thoughtful integration of rock, water, and vegetation. The technique of "artificial creation that appears natural" reflects an aesthetic of coexistence and restraint — a hallmark of Eastern ecological wisdom. At this moment, the Humble Administrator's Garden was no longer just a scenic site, but a "living ecological laboratory," breathing new life into classical landscapes through modern education.
Part 2
Exploring with Mind and Heart:
Tracing the Multiple Orders of Ecology
As observation deepened, students moved from sensing nature to exploring it scientifically. Guided by their teachers, they conducted hands-on ecological experiments and comparative research.
Garden Experiment:
Reading the "Vitality of Water" through Data

Within the Humble Administrator's Garden, students conducted field experiments focused on the "underwater forest" ecosystem. They collected water samples from different locations, measuring pH, temperature, and transparency, and analyzed how aquatic plants influence ecological balance. They discovered that these plants serve not only as decoration but also as key agents in energy conversion and material cycling.

Through their teachers' explanations, students learned how traditional garden engineering — techniques such as "concealment, separation, and breaking" in water design — integrates with modern ecological regulation methods. This fusion preserves the ancient philosophy of "guided by humans, aligned with nature," while revitalizing water systems through ecological restoration.
Research at Huqiu Mountain Scenic Area:
Understanding the Order of Nature

On the second day, students extended their inquiry from artificial gardens to natural forests at Huqiu Mountain Scenic Area. They compared the two ecosystems, recording vegetation layers, soil humidity, and species diversity. In contrast to the human-managed balance of gardens, the forest ecosystem exhibited a more complex and self-regulating natural equilibrium.

From these comparisons, students concluded that artificial garden ecosystems rely on delicate human management, while natural ecosystems achieve stability through biodiversity and ecological differentiation.
Cultural Immersion:
Rediscovering Dialogue Between Humans and Nature

Amid the autumn woods, students donned traditional Hanfu attire, experiencing the ancient lifestyle philosophy of "harmony between humans and nature." Climbing mountain paths and observing the forest, they discussed how people of the past understood and lived within nature. In this moment, scientific exploration intertwined with cultural reflection — reason and emotion converging into a profound dialogue between nature and the self.
