Recently, Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan High School (SHBS) hosted a special sharing session—Dr. Yan Yuzhen, a parent and student guardian, delivered a lecture titled "Living at the End of the World—Experiences in Antarctic Exploration," opening a window to the icy continent of Antarctica for the students.
The presentation began with a deep historical overview. On the screen, the "unknown southern continent" from Ptolemy's writings appeared first, followed by Captain Cook's brave voyage through storms, and then the legendary journeys of Amundsen and Scott competing for the South Pole … The narrative of history unfolded gradually, immersing everyone in an era of exploration and dreams.
When Dr. Yan shared her personal experiences in Antarctica, the distant stories seemed suddenly tangible: resilient life beneath the ice, accelerating glacial melting, and various national research stations scattered across the white continent… Among them, the most remarkable was the largest research station in Antarctica. These authentic accounts made everyone present realize that the seemingly isolated ice plain actually hides many little-known details.
Through Dr. Yan’s storytelling, the students not only gained insight into the work and life of scientific explorers in extreme environments but also developed a deeper understanding of the hardships and significance of polar scientific research. The lecture concluded with a focus on ice core research—the ancient bubbles trapped within ice layers, like "time capsules" carefully preserved by Earth, silently yet powerfully providing evidence for climate change studies.
Eagerly engaged, teachers and students at the end of the session raised numerous questions, reflecting both depth and curiosity: "Does the United Nations have a special treaty for Antarctica?" "How do researchers handle sanitation and waste in Antarctica?" "Are the penguins in zoos stolen from Antarctica?" "What physical preparations are needed to participate in Antarctic expeditions?" "Dr. Yan, what did you major in during university to have the opportunity for Antarctic research?" … The interaction was lively, sparks of thought constantly flying.
This lecture not only expanded the students' understanding of Antarctica but also planted seeds of curiosity and exploration in many hearts. While gaining deeper knowledge about Earth's extreme environments, they quietly absorbed valuable qualities such as courage, perseverance, and scientific spirit.
