Beginning in October, the students set out from the bamboo forests of Jishan in Guangde, Anhui, where they completed their simulation training, and later, in late autumn, traveled to the Golden Ancient Trail in Xikou, Fenghua, Zhejiang, to undertake the official assessment. With every step along the mountain paths, these young explorers measured the terrain beneath their feet—and, more importantly, wrote their own stories of growth and vitality in the open wilderness.

All stories and reflections come from the students' authentic sharing.
Salute to every young explorer who is on the journey.

When roles turn into responsibility,
a sense of ownership quietly takes root.
Under the guidance of their mentors, students worked in teams throughout the journey. Each student was not only a hiker, but also took on a specific role—such as team leader, navigator, or safety officer. Everyone fulfilled their own responsibilities, becoming an indispensable "gear" that kept the team moving forward.
"At the beginning, my navigation skills weren't very strong… I even led the team off course at first. But with guidance from our teachers and continuous practice, I gradually learned how to navigate. By observing the terrain, I became able to judge which route the group should take, and slowly began to act like a real navigator."
Oreo, the cook of Team C, after a full day of demanding hiking, still pushed through his exhaustion to prepare ingredients and carefully cook a fragrant stir-fried chicken for the team.

Hiking is a dialogue with oneself—
and a journey taken alongside a team.

Going uphill was extremely exhausting; going downhill was slippery and painful underfoot. It felt like danger was everywhere.
One student wrote this while reflecting on the first day's route. Yet it was precisely this sense of difficulty that made every step feel especially meaningful.

A student from Group A failed to notice the ground beneath their feet and accidentally stepped into empty space. The impact of the fall caused their glasses to fly off and land in the nearby grass. Classmates immediately joined in to help search, carefully checking every corner, and eventually the glasses were found.

Along the way, physical exhaustion, wrong turns, and shortages of supplies—these "unexpected situations" happened to nearly every group. Team A noted in their reflection:
"Some teammates had nosebleeds, missed their footing, or twisted their ankles. These sudden incidents made us walk 20 to 30 minutes longer than planned."
Yet no one complained—
there was only waiting for one another and supporting each other forward.

"When my knee hurt so badly that I could barely walk, the team leader came straight over and said, 'Give me your pack—just walk slowly,'" Evonne wrote.
In that moment, I didn't feel like a burden at all. I just felt warm inside.

Thematic Research:
Discovering the World in the Wilderness
Team A explored the historic building Wuling School – Gezhu Branch, reflecting on how ancient architecture can be revitalized in contemporary society, and understanding the significance of preservation through policy, emotional value, and functional use.
Team B immersed themselves in the local rural business ecosystem, documenting farmhouse restaurants, small shops, and everyday village life, collecting images and data as valuable resources for future research.
Team C used their cameras to capture "environmental scars" in the mountains, reflecting on the relationship between humans and nature through the contrast between natural beauty and litter.
Team D observed variations in the growth of red maple trees, seeking natural patterns through factors such as sunlight and soil conditions.
Team E entered Hutang Village to investigatehow red revolutionary culture shapes rural identity and contributes to tourism and community development.
Research was not merely an assignment, but a genuine dialogue with the land, history, and humanity. Learning did not remain in textbooks—it unfolded in every pause, observation, and exploration in the wilderness.

Those "unforgettable moments" became
sources of both laughter and tears.

"The campfire on the second night—everyone sitting around the fire, singing, roasting marshmallows, and lighting sparklers—was pure joy."
"Shaking the frost off the tent in the morning let me, a student from the south, see 'snow' for the first time."
"When I forgot my headlamp, the beam of light a teammate handed me became my only support on the dark mountain path."
These moments were written into reports, edited into videos, and etched into the students' memories.
In the vlogs they filmed and edited themselves, there are breathtaking views along the trail, words of encouragement shared with one another, songs sung beneath the stars—and the quiet reluctance to part at the journey's end.

Returning Home:
An Ending and Also a Beginning

"The finish line is also a new starting point," Team B wrote at the conclusion of their presentation.
The three-day hike was not only a physical challenge, but also a profound journey of the mind. In their reflections, students repeatedly mentioned the same key words:
responsibility, collaboration, perseverance, and gratitude.
“
I learned to plan ahead, to take responsibility within a team, and to keep smiling even in difficult situations.
”
“
I've come to realize that growth is never smooth sailing—it happens when we support one another through adversity and push forward together.
”

却教会人谦卑;
The mountains speak without words,
yet they teach humility;
the rugged paths are unforgiving,
yet they forge resilience.
In these three days, UEC students did not merely traverse mountain trails—they stepped into a broader landscape of personal growth.
May this experience become
a shining medal in your youth,
and may you always remember:
No matter how high the mountains or
how long the road ahead,
we walk it together.
