In an era of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, we have become increasingly accustomed to using technology to solve problems and enhance efficiency. At the same time, however, we are beginning to reflect: when machines are capable of simulating thinking, emotion, and creativity, where does humanity's unique value truly lie? In this episode of SMCS TALK, Yuri, John, and Tang approach this question from different perspectives, engaging in a deep and thought-provoking exploration of the idea of the "Future Me."

Yuri

Yuri's talk begins with an experience centered on "silence."

She was once introverted and sensitive, afraid of making mistakes in class or speaking in public, and anxious about being judged.

The real turning point came with a change of environment—a new school and new peers—which allowed her, for the first time, to see another possibility: people who could express themselves with confidence, speak logically, and voice their thoughts with ease. These role models did not create pressureinstead, they ignited her determination to change.

Gradually, she came to realize that

expression is not an innate talent, but a skill that can be learned and constructed.

One teacher did not simply comfort her, but consistently created opportunities for her to speak.

Each time she spoke became a form of practice—from stabilizing her voice and posture, to organizing her thoughtsand ultimately to building trust in herself

This was a process that unfolded over several years, accompanied by doubt and struggle.

It was this steady accumulation that led to a genuine transformation. Yuri emphasizes that growth is not about erasing one's past self, but about moving forward through acceptance.

As Carl Jung once said,

I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.

Yuri's story reveals a form of inner drive that begins with self-acceptance and moves outward through active exploration. The future self does not emerge out of nowhere; it is continuously shaped through repeated choices and deliberate practice.

——创造力、同理心、好奇心、爱与宽恕;

而非被动接受“技术能做什么”;

If Yuri's story focuses on an individual path of growth, John's talk shifts the lens to a broader historical context—how digital technologies, especially AI, are shaping who we may become in the future.

He raises a crucial question:
when AI can write, create, recommend, and even simulate understanding and companionship, where does humanity's unique value truly lie?

John neither denies the convenience technology brings nor indulges in fear about the future. Instead, he points out that the real risk does not come from technology itself, but from whether humans unconsciously surrender their agency.Technology can create connection, but it can also produce loneliness; it can expand cognition, yet also trap us in information bubbles.

For this reason, he emphasizes that the future self must hold fast to three principles:

to safeguard the human qualities that cannot be algorithmized—

creativity, empathy, curiosity, love, and forgiveness;

to actively reflect on what technology should do,

rather than passively accepting what it can do;

and to maintain the ability to learn and

adapt in a constantly changing world.

The future is not a confrontation between humans and technology, but a form of collaboration. Yet within this collaboration, humans must always remain in the guiding role.

John's talk shifts the focus from technology itself to human agency within it. AI, he argues, is not inherently frightening; the true danger lies in whether people relinquish judgment and value-based decision-making in the name of convenience. Technology should be used, not followed. Only when human qualities are combined with independent thinking can the future self truly belong to oneself.

Tang

The Grand Finale of Sirius Fest 2025

Tang's talk brings the discussion back to the everyday experiences most familiar to us.

As a music lover, he is accustomed to recording live performances through images and videos. Yet on one occasion, he chose to put his phone down and simply listen. That experience prompted a deeper reflection: why are we so obsessed with capturing the present moment?

Drawing on Walter Benjamin's reflections on photography, Tang points to a thought-provoking paradox:

when we attempt to preserve the present, we often distance ourselves from it. The camera is placed between us and reality; experiences are stored in devices rather than truly entering memory.

This tension is also evident in contemporary society's pursuit of "authenticity." Natural-looking cosmetic procedures, hyper-realistic AI-generated images, and even highly performative forms of meditation and yoga all produce a replicable sense of "realness," while genuine experience becomes increasingly rare.

He responds to this phenomenon with a brief yet profound line from the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne:

When I dance, I dance; when I sleep, I sleep.

True authenticity, Tang suggests,

emerges in moments of full immersion—

when we are completely engaged in action and momentarily forget ourselves.

It is in such moments that our connection with the world is restored.

Tang's speech reminds us that authenticity is not the same as being recorded. In an age of endless reproduction and display, what is truly scarce is not images, but the ability to be fully present. When we set aside self-surveillance and external gazes, and return to action and experience itself, authenticity can finally take place.

From Yuri's journey of self-construction, to John's defense of human agency in a technological age, and finally to Tang's questioning of authentic experience, the three speakers converge on a shared insight:

the future self is not a pre-designed state of perfection, but a process continually shaped through ongoing choices, active reflection, and genuine experience.

What SMCS TALK seeks to cultivate is precisely this future-oriented capacity—the ability to remain clear-minded amid change, to uphold values within technology, and to become oneself through action.  Together with students, we move toward the future through thinking and reflection.
