Igniting the Courage to Express

Teacher Ma Brings Children’s Voices to the TEDx Stage.

Q: Hello, Teacher Ma! What prompted you to initiate the campus TEDx event last year?

A: The original intention is very simple! I noticed that high school students actually have a lot of profound thoughts about social events and life directions, but they are often overlooked due to their age. I want to give them a big stage so that their voices can be heard by more people - choosing the TED brand is to hope that society will value the ideas of these teenagers in this era. Also, I want to give them courage and tell them: You don't have to be a big name, as long as you have your own insights, you can stand on the stage to convey value.

Q: How do you strike a balance between granting students autonomy and keeping the event preparation on track?

A: I consider myself to be a "coach by the racetrack"! The students are selected through interviews. I have great confidence in their abilities. I strictly adhere to the basic boundaries - for instance, avoiding topics that are against the platform's rules, such as politics. Most of the time, I can resist the urge to intervene. Even if their discussion direction is a bit chaotic, I believe they have their own thoughts; occasionally, when I can't resist and point them in a direction, the children might have their own persistence. Just respect them.

Q: What's your insight into this event's theme, "Becoming"?

A: I completely agree with the statement that "life is a journey!" The core of "Becoming" is "Choice" - every choice we make shapes the growing self we are becoming. Such a life is truly interesting. Moreover, the core of TEDx is to disseminate diverse ideas. Schools have always provided students with both on-campus and off-campus platforms for them to build their own understanding through experiences, which is in perfect alignment with the concept of "Becoming".

Q: Besides TEDx, the school has also launched healing spaces and digital creativity workshops. What were the original intentions behind these new projects?

A: All of this is based on observations of students and society! The healing space aims to help children understand their emotions, relax and reduce stress, and truly experience happiness. The digital creativity workshop addresses the controversies surrounding AI, guiding them to utilize the advantages of AI while avoiding potential risks. We don't just teach tools; we also want them to see the limitations and problems of technology.

Q: What specific impacts and changes do you expect this event to bring to the on-site audience and students?

A: On one hand, even if viewers can remember just one sentence - such as "The path ahead becomes clear through choices, not broadened by hesitation", and they can be inspired when making future decisions, it would be very valuable. On the other hand, there is the influence of peers. Seeing that friends can organize and speak would make them think "I can do it too", and this kind of ripple effect is particularly beneficial.

Q: What  plans or expectations do you have for the next TEDx event?

A: We will continue the "old mentor new apprentice" model - this year's organizers will become the coaches for next year, and a new team will be recruited to carry on the tradition. It will be held every year. But I have no preset expectations. The initiative lies entirely with the children. We will only ensure the safety boundaries, and let them do as they wish within that framework.
