Event Recap

【 特邀嘉宾 Guest of Honor 】

Fueled by passion for physics and curiosity about the universe, our students represented the school at this science popularization event that blends academic rigor with humanistic warmth. The inaugural lecture of the year boasted a stellar lineup: speaker Frank Wilczek, a Nobel laureate, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chief Scientist at the Li Zhengdao Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, leveraged his profound academic expertise and accessible expression to take the audience on a mentally stimulating yet rewarding journey through the quantum universe.
Centering his speech on "Quantum Mechanics and Cosmic Cognition", Frank Wilczek broke down the cognitive barriers between the macro and micro worlds. Starting with the fascinating laws of the quantum realm, he explained how the universe serves as a natural classroom for quantum mechanics and how quantum theory advances humanity’s exploration of the universe's essence. He noted that human understanding of the universe progresses by breaking boundaries: classical physics once framed our view of the world, while quantum mechanics has opened a broader cognitive window, allowing us to uncover the operating codes of macro spacetime through the vibrations of micro particles. This cross-scale scientific thinking aligns perfectly with the Galaxy Forum's philosophy of "interpreting the way of exploration through scientific wisdom".
In the roundtable discussion, Frank Wilczek engaged in in-depth exchanges with distinguished guests, sharing insights on topics such as "breaking the cognitive limits of classical physics" and "unified interpretation of the macro and micro worlds", sparking intense intellectual collisions. YWIES Lingang students listened attentively and took notes throughout, pondering the marvelous quantum phenomena and nodding in admiration at the scientists' profound insights.
During the on-site Q&A session, Dr. Zhou Zejun, the Chinese Principal, took the lead in raising a discussion topic, focusing on how artificial intelligence empowers the preservation of curiosity among the younger generation. Drawing on their cutting-edge scientific research experience, Frank Wilczek and the distinguished guests present then offered professional insights and advice. He stressed that educators should proactively shift their mindset and guide students to turn electronic devices from mere entertainment tools into windows for exploring scientific knowledge. Leveraging AI's powerful search and analytical capabilities, students can efficiently acquire interdisciplinary scientific knowledge and continuously expand the boundaries of their scientific cognition through interactive learning experiences—ultimately allowing curiosity to truly become the driving force behind sustained exploration.
Jeremy Zhou, a IG2 student, commented: "The Nobel laureate unpacked abstruse quantum theories in plain language, making me realize quantum mechanics is not just distant formulas but an essential tool for explaining the universe. This cross-scale perspective has opened new doors for my physics studies."
Their on-site participation closely linked classroom learning with cutting-edge science popularization. The students not only experienced the personal charisma and academic rigor of top scientists up close but also developed scientific thinking and an exploratory spirit imperceptibly. This is a vivid practice of the school's philosophy of "Alliance with Science and Technology", enabling students to establish lofty aspirations for pursuing truth and exploring the unknown through engagement with high-end academic resources.
