(Fluency Trap)”

(Facilitator

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the world. From scientific research to classroom learning, AI is rapidly becoming a core capability for the future.

This spring, SUIS Pudong A Level launched its Frontier AI Innovation Course. Led by Professor Guo Yike, Vice-President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the programme draws on leading academic resources to guide students from understanding AI, to applying AI, and ultimately to innovating with AI.

Three SUIS Pudong teachers recently completed an AI teacher training programme, gaining first-hand insights into how emerging technologies are reshaping education. Now, with their experience and reflections, the AI course is ready to take flight.

When AI enters the classroom, how might the role of teachers change?

PART 01

Mr. Ouyang: AI Helps Teachers Return to the Essence of Education

During the training, Mr. Ouyang explored a range of AI-powered teaching tools, including intelligent lesson planning systems, resource generation platforms, and learning analytics tools.

What impressed him most was not the idea of replacing teachers, but the opportunity to free teachers from repetitive tasks.

As he shared:“AI can take over many routine tasks, allowing teachers to focus on what truly matters — thoughtful lesson design, meaningful classroom interaction, and personalised guidance for students.”

In his view, the classroom of the future will increasingly embody human-AI collaboration.
Technology improves efficiency, while the warmth of education continues to come from the connection between teachers and students.

PART 02

Ms. Wang: Beware the “Fluency Trap”

For Ms. Wang, one concept from the training stood out: the “Fluency Trap.”

When AI provides answers instantly, the learning process may feel smoother than ever. However, this convenience may also reduce opportunities for deeper thinking.

True learning often happens through the process of grappling with problems.

Therefore, in AI-assisted classrooms, it becomes even more important to design thought-provoking learning tasks that challenge students to think critically while using technological tools.

The training also introduced a practical three-step pathway for educators:

  • Reduce routine teaching workload

  • Master AI workflow tools

  • Build effective human–AI collaboration in learning

In the age of AI, teachers need not only technological understanding, but also the ability to design deeper and more meaningful learning experiences.

PART 03

Ms. Wan: AI Literacy as a Future Competency

Ms. Wan approached the training from the perspective of curriculum development.

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, AI literacy is increasingly becoming an essential capability for students.

For this reason, the AI course represents more than a new subject, it is an exploration of new possibilities in school-based curriculum design. It also signals a shift in the role of teachers.

Rather than being solely transmitters of knowledge, teachers are increasingly becoming facilitators of learning.

In an AI-powered learning environment, teachers play an even more vital role in helping students:

  • Ask meaningful questions

  • Engage in interdisciplinary thinking

  • Develop sound values and social responsibility

Technology continues to evolve, but the essence of education remains the same —
to nurture young people who can think about the world, understand it, and shape its future.

When AI Enters the Classroom

At SUIS Pudong, we believe that technology should serve education, not replace it. By continuously learning and experimenting, we aim to build classrooms that embrace the future while preserving the human warmth at the heart of education.

In the coming articles of this series, we will continue to explore the Frontier AI Innovation Course at SUIS Pudong A Level, sharing insights into its curriculum design and student learning experiences.
