深圳诺德双语学校线上教学

两年前,疫情把整个教育界都搞得措手不及,令师生家长都紧张不已。经过2020年的经历,所有家长、学生和老师都对可能回到线上学习感到焦虑不安。

 

即使2020年过去很久,但我们所有人都知道,可能有一天,我们将不得不再次进行线上教学。依靠深植于我们心里的3R价值观中(尊重、责任和毅力),学校全体管理层和教职工一直在幕后工作,并为此做好了准备。

基于国内外成功的实践,我们设计了一套教学系统,让学生、老师和家长尽可能接近在校内的学习体验。今天,我们将带大家了解我们线上教学的核心要素:





TEAMS平台

TEAMS PLATFORM


在深圳诺德双语学校,我们学生的课程都是通过微软Teams平台进行,学生整个星期的时间表都在日历中显示,一键就能加入课堂。 


小班教学的模式让老师更多地设计课堂互动,学生的参与度与专注度更高。出于尊重和责任,老师们要求所有学生打开摄像头,并积极参与课堂。  


我们善用平台中强大的分组讨论室功能。这可以让老师设计小组学习活动,将学生分成多个小组,并能一起讨论问题。


这一切,尤其是学生日常活动的参与,都是在班主任和学校领导的密切监督下进行的。我们知道,很多家长因为工作原因,不能在孩子上课期间进行监督,这也是我们使用Teams平台考勤报告功能的原因。每天早上的班会,班主任都会讨论学生的出勤情况,同时检查学生的心理和情绪状况。


萤火虫学习平台

FIREFLY PLATFORM


考虑到线上教学存在一定的局限性,特别是在课后任务的布置、完成和监督等方面。从去年9月开始,我们一直在使用Firefly萤火虫学习平台,缓解一系列问题。


这个系统的核心元素——设置任务。


在任务模块中,老师可以给学生布置日常任务,所有的任务都有明确清晰的描述、期望、支持文件和完成期限。与此同时,家长也可以清楚地知道如何访问和了解到所有这些信息,并检查孩子的完成情况和进步。


在学生完成和提交每一项任务后,老师都会进行查阅批改,并对完成情况给予清晰的反馈。学校还在下午设置了作业监督时间,对没能按时完成作业的学生进行视频监督。


每日心理小课堂

每天下午,我们学校的心理老师Richard都会进行在线心理健康小课堂,与学生们分享许多有效应对隔离生活和在线学习挑战的方法和策略。

Richard 老师毕业于伦敦政治经济学院社会与文化心理学专业,共情能力与沟通能力强。作为学生心目中的“知心大哥哥”,Richard老师在学校里不仅是个很好的倾诉对象,还积极开展了冥想课堂,帮助同学们调整自己,集中意志力。


伦敦政治经济学院,英文简称LSE,为英国G5超级精英大学之一,2022年QS世界大学排名前 50。


该课程深受学生的欢迎和喜欢,每天都有近一半的学生参与。

在为期三周的线上教学后,学校开展了两项调查,旨在收集关于线上教学质量、Teams课堂和Firefly萤火虫学习平台、学生课后情况、学生情绪的反馈和未来改进建议。

家长对Teams平台的评价平均分数为8.6/10,学生对Teams平台的评价平均分数为7.1/10


超过70%的学生对Firefly平台感到满意或非常满意,而对于家长来说,这个比例是85%


80%的学生认为他们可以在没有家长帮助的情况下按时完成课后任务。


四分之三的学生表示,除了每天的体育课程和任务外,他们会花更多的时间进行体育锻炼。


几乎90%的家长认为目前孩子的心理和情绪状态非常稳定。

ONLINE LEARNING 

AT NAS SHENZHEN

Based on the experiences of 2020, all of the parents, students, and teachers have been living in anxiety regarding the possible return to online teaching. Two years ago, the whole educational world got caught by surprise leading to many stressful moments. 


Much time has passed since then, yet all of us knew that the day might come when, once more, we will have to teach and learn online. Deeply rooted in our guiding values of three Rs (Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience) the administration and staff of NAS Shenzhen have been working behind the scenes to prepare for such an eventuality. 


Based on the best national and international practices, we have designed a system of teaching and learning that brings the students, teachers, and parents as close to the in-school experience as possible. Below are the core elements of the system:

TEAMS PLATFORM


All student lessons are conducted through the Microsoft Teams platform, with each student’s whole week schedule available in the calendars. After installing the application on the device, all that is required from the students is to enter the meeting and join the lesson.   


Thanks to our small class sizes, the teachers are able to conduct interactive lessons with a high degree of student participation. All teachers and pupils are, out of respect and responsibility, required to have their cameras on and to take an active part in the lesson. 


One of the strong features of the system is the breakout room function. It allows the teachers to design learning activities in which students get divided into smaller groups and are able to discuss the questions and problems. 


All of this, especially the student’s participation in the daily activities, is under the close supervision of the homeroom teachers and the school leadership. We know that many parents, due to work reasons, are not able to supervise their children during school time, and that’s why we use the attendance report function. During each morning class meeting, the homeroom teachers discuss the student’s attendance, checking at the same time on their psychological and emotional wellbeing.

The NAS Shenzhen community fully understands that online teaching comes with certain limitations, especially when it comes to after-class task assignment, completion and supervision. Because of that, since last September our school has been using the Firefly virtual learning environment which alleviates a lot of these issues.


Tasks – the core element of the system. 


In this module, teachers are able to assign daily tasks to the students, which come with a clear description, expectations, supporting documents, and completion deadline. At the same time, the parents have clear access to all of this information and can check on their child’s progress. 


After each task has been submitted by the students, it is checked by the teachers and clear feedback on the completion is given. The school has also introduced an afternoon homework supervision time, in which students who struggle to complete the tasks on time are invited to participate.

Each day in the afternoon, just after lunchtime, our school psychologist Mr. Richard Yu conducts an online wellbeing session in which he shares with the students a lot of useful approaches and strategies to deal with the challenges of quarantine life and online learning.

Mr. Richard graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science majoring in social and cultural psychology, with strong empathy and communication skills. As a "confidant big brother" in the minds of students, Mr. Richard is not only a good person to talk to at school, but also actively conducts mindfullness session to help students adjust themselves and concentrate their willpower.


LSE is one of the G5 super-elite universities in the UK and is ranked among the top 50 universities in the QS World University Rankings in 2022.

These sessions have been very well received by the students with almost one in two pupils attending on a daily basis.

PARENTS AND STUDENTS SURVEYS


Following the three weeks of online teaching, NAS Shenzhen conducted two surveys aimed at collecting feedback on the online teaching quality, Teams and Firefly platforms, after-school situation, student emotional wellbeing, and suggestions for future improvements. 


We are pleased to share that:


-  The average parent score of the Teams platform is 8.6/10, while for students it is 7.1/10.


-  Over 70% of students are satisfied / very satisfied with the Firefly platform, while for parents this proportion is 85%.


80% of students agreed that they can finish their after-school task on time and do it without the assistance of parents. 


Three in four students stated that apart from the daily PE lessons and tasks, they spend additional time on exercise. 


-   Almost nine in ten parents described their current child’s mental and emotional state as very stable and stable.

The NAS Shenzhen whole school community once again has shown that the guiding values of resilience, respect, and responsibility are deeply embedded within each aspect of school life. This, in face of the current challenges, allows us to come as a community and deliver online teaching and learning that benefits all the members of our community, We are also very grateful for the open and honest feedback received from the parents and pupils, and the high marks of our current practice. 

 

But we should not stop there, as there is still room to improve. All the gathered data is used to inform our future steps and adjustments to the current practice. Within the values of respect, responsibility, and resilience we will continue to support our community with high-quality teaching and learning.
