MISsive No. 10

From Juniors School

As usual, lots of activities have been taking place in the Juniors in the past two weeks, and it is a pleasure to welcome new members of staff that will contribute to the continued improvement of our school.

We have welcomed Ms. Maryam Khan, who has join Ms. Fayrooz Sayed in Year 4 and we are looking forward to soon splitting the group into two classes so that we can enhance their learning experience.

We have had two especially fun activities in the past two weeks, where our students did not need to wear their uniforms to come to school. After completing two weeks of assessments, we had a special pajama day, organized by our Student Council, for our children to relax and enjoy, while learning in their pajamas.

It was World Book Day on March 2nd, and in the Juniors school we celebrated it with lots of fun and meaningful activities. Students were given the opportunity to come to school dressed up as a book character or as a word and we had a parade during assembly for everyone to show their costumes and strike a pose!  During the day children had Story Time with a different class teacher and were also partnered up with a student from a different class for some ‘Buddy Reading’. Our amazing librarians planned a fabulous treasure hunt in the library and the children had fun using their reading skills to find some chocolate to share with their friends!

In addition, the Reading Corner competition is ongoing until the end of the term when they will be judged and the winner will be announced, so teachers and students are sill working on their wonderful ideas and designs.

We are excited about welcoming our MIS parents in the coming weeks for Come Learn With Me Maths lessons and external CCAs, so that we get to share with our MIS community how our children learn while having fun and develop their confidence through challenges and games. These activities further support the development of our MIS values and virtues and allow children to develop skills for life.

We also look forward to sharing your child’s results and targets at the Parent & Teacher meetings, March 20th – 24th.

Best wishes,

Head of Juniors Ms Priscila Perdomo

IPC Class

One of the educational benefits of our International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is that it equips our students with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be global citizens that positively contribute to the world that they live in. One of the ways this is achieved is through the teaching and learning of our 'Adopted Continents'. At MIS each year group has been allocated a continent to learn about:

Early Years & Year 1: Asia

Year 2: Europe

Year 3: South America

Year 4: Australia/Oceania

Year 5: North America

Year 6: Africa

Our students create classroom door displays showcasing their learning of the continent and how it connects to their IPC topic. The children are also taught to develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between their adopted continent and the country that they live in, and in doing so discover broader perspectives, address misconceptions or stereotypes and enhance their international mindedness.

From Seniors School

This past 14 days have been typically filled with activities:

Last Friday was the second options event for year-11 students transitioning into A-level next year.  We focused on particular courses, including our new offering of AS Psychology.  We are thrilled to be able to offer a new subject at A-level and this is a reflection of the hard work and diligence of the team behind the scenes in making this happen and making sure it is done properly. Turnout was again fantastic and we were thrilled to see how engaged everyone was in planning for their children's next big step up.

This week was Maths week and Pi day. We kicked off with an excellent Maths assembly in which a large number of winning certificates were issued for student participation in an international Maths competition; this was followed-up with a fun Maths clan-event. Maths is an important subject on it's own but it was great to see it being applied elsewhere across the school too.

As if that wasn't enough, we finished the week with a student concert at the end of the day, Friday with several of our soloists, instrumentalists and ensembles showing us just how talented they are.

Seniors English Class

Critiquing Literature Through the OESC Analytical Paragraph Structure in Year 10 First Language English, by James Kelly

For our current Scheme of Work in IGCSE First Language English, Year 10 students are reading a collection of Ted Hughes’ poetry as part of preparation to critique the writer’s work in essay format for their coursework portfolios. To help achieve this objective, our class has studied some of Hughes’ poems and improved their poetry reading abilities by developing their knowledge and understanding of literary terminology. However, for the written aspect of this task, I have recently incorporated the OESC paragraph framework to improve critical writing skills across the group. This writing framework (the OESC acronym stands for Outline, Explain & Expand, Support, and Conclude) is designed to aid students in stand-alone paragraph writing and larger essay construction. While the Outline div states the point which the student wishes to analyse, and the Explain & Expand div elaborates on the surrounding context of the idea, it is the Support div which defines it as an analytical framework. It is centred around the ‘Sentence Structure for Analysing Quotes’, which allows students to explain their ideas about poetic works with accuracy, by requiring them to incorporate quotes from a poem to independently create a clear, logical analysis of the work. It also demands that students practice the appropriate register necessary for critical essay writing, which they are supported to do through vocabulary and phrase lists. Students also apply their knowledge and understanding of literary terms in the Support div, by considering how they shape the meaning and effects created within the text and on the reader, as part of their analysis. Pleasingly, Year 10 students will continue to practice the OESC in their ongoing IGCSE English studies. It not only helps pupils develop their analytical writing skills within the scope of literature, but also serves the purposes of the language area of IGCSE First Language English. To that effect, it is a framework that supports a variety of other academic genres of written expression, such as descriptive and persuasive writing.

Seniors Geography Class

Hands-On Learning: Geography Students Measure Slope to Create Cross-Sectional Diagram

In the past two weeks, students in Year 10 and Year 11 geography classes have been getting their hands dirty by measuring the slope and length of a hill, in order to create a cross-dival diagram of the slope. This practical exercise has allowed students to learn and gain a deeper understanding of the concepts taught in class.

The activity began with a brief lecture on the basics of measuring slope and length, including the use of surveying tools such as clinometers and measuring tapes. After the initial introduction, students carefully did their measurements and compared their results with their peers to ensure accuracy. Once all the measurements were collected, the students used their measurements to plot the slope angle and length.

By getting out of the classroom and into the field, they are able to see firsthand how the concepts we study in class are applied in the real world.

Overall, the activity was a success, and the students came away with a newfound appreciation for the practical applications of their geography lessons.

Seniors Creactive Arts Class

Celebrating Women’s Composers

Over the past century, a lot has changed in our perception of women in music. In the renaissance and baroque period, women were not allowed to join the choir as a church rule. In the classical period, women were encouraged to study music but to never become a professional, and indeed, were banned from joining an orchestra. But, women composers, did not lack the talent, or the courage to make their voices heard.  In many cases, their husbands would not allow them to become composers, citing the quote from Gustav Mahler to his wife, who said ‘your only job, is to make me happy. Over the past few decades, society has changed their attitude, and we now celebrate female composers equally on the concert stage.

In Year 9 and Year 7 Music, students discussed why female composers were not recognized in their context and created posters to celebrate Women’s Composers from around the world including, Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Maria Martines, Hildegard of Bingen, Cecile Chaminade, and Anna Amalia of Prussia.

Senior Art

The Year 10 art students taking GCSE exams are currently working on their first final project - creating natural form sculptures. They have dedicated the rest of Term 2 to completing their sculptures, which will also count towards their GCSE final grade. It's commendable to see how hardworking and focused the students are on their work. Well done Year 10!

The Junior Reporters

In CCA over the past 2 weeks, The Junior Reporters, led by Miss Chalmers, have been reporting on their fun news stories around MIS! A group is reporting on ‘Raining Chocolate’, ‘Alien invasion’, ‘Flying car’, ‘A cat that can talk’, ‘A girl that speaks 100 languages’, ‘A whale stuck on a beach’ and ‘A magic pen’. The children have created news scripts, which they will record and edit to post on class dojo and show to the rest of the school.

From Pizzas to Soufflés: Exploring the World of Baking and Learns the Importance of Food Preparation

In the past few weeks, the Baking CCA has been busy whipping up some delicious treats. From pizzas and puddings to apple crisps and soufflés, members of the CCA have been putting their culinary skills to the test and having a great time in the process.Students worked in small groups to create their own unique pizzas, puddings, apple crisps, and soufflés.

But while the baking club members were having fun, they also learned an important lesson about the hard work that goes into food preparation. They discovered that baking is not just about following a recipe – it requires patience, attention to detail, and a lot of trial and error.

Badminton CCA

The youngest students are now very proficient at reversing the ball on their forehand and backhand, the best Jason can reverse the ball more than 120 times and David, who could only reverse the ball 3 times before, can also reverse the ball more than 12 times now.

In general, the children have a very good understanding of the forehand and forehand pick, and they can hit 6-7 balls out of 10 on average. Keep it up boys and girls!

Table Tennis CCA

In these two lessons, the children were given a review of the backhand attacking moves, organized sparring sessions and learned the essentials of the forehand attacking moves. Manfred's forehand was very good. Well done!

Library World Book Day Activity: Treasure Hunt

To celebrate the world Book Day, MIS library has held a Treasure Hunting activity where our Juniors students have actively participated. The students are asked to read a book and then answer a question or fill in a story map showing their understanding of the story, by getting the answer correctly they will get a ticket where it outlines the key information of where the ‘treasure’(book)  is hided. The students will then need to find the book, and they will get a golden chocolate if they do! It was a lot of fun!

Staff in the Spotlight

This week, we are delighted to introduce you two senior leaders who have recently joined MIS and they are Head of Juniors Ms Priscila Perdomo and Head of Seniors Mr Mark Bridgeman. During their short period of time in MIS, they have widely been liked by our staff and students because of their enthusiasm to education. We are confident that with Ms Perdomo and Mr Bridgeman’s arrival, we will continue to offer all of our students the outstanding academic and pastoral support so that our students will conduct their learning in a safe, happy and healthy environment.

Firstly, let’s meet with our new Head of Juniors Ms Priscila Perdomo who will officially starts her role from Term 3 and has been working closely with Ms Sabrina Neil for a smooth transition since she was on board in February. With 15 years of Primary teaching and leadership experience, Ms Priscila Perdomo has been in senior leadership positions since 2014. She is passionate about empowering teachers and learners and providing opportunities for individuals to unlock their potential. Let’s find more about her from our interview.

Where else in the world have you lived?

I have lived in Uruguay, England, Turkey and Tanzania.

How do you find China is different from where you have lived?

It depends on which country I compared it to, if I compare it to living in Tanzania the first difference that comes to mind is infrastructure; if I compare it to living in Uruguay, I think the obvious difference is population. China’s language, culture and food is also quite different, but that is also what makes it so interesting.

What’s your favourite weekend activity in Shenzhen?

We have only had one weekend in Shenzhen since we moved so I think we still need to explore a bit more. However, we usually enjoy taking our Labrador puppy for a walk so that we can spend some time together outdoors.

Did you always want to be a teacher?

No, I love Science, so I initially studied Biochemistry because I wanted to be a scientist and at some point in my life, I also entertained the thought of being a sports journalist because I love football. That being said, when I was in Year 11, I had already started volunteering at my school helping students in Junior school with their learning.

Tell us about a hidden talent or a top secret that no-one would know about you.

I am not sure it is a hidden talent, but something that I enjoy, and I am good at is making barbecues, which are very popular and an important part of being Uruguayan.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party, dead or alive?

Kobe Bryant, Freddy Mercury, my grandpa, my grandma and my sister Cecilia.

What does a typical day at MIS look like for you?

At the moment I am settling in and getting to know everyone so most of my day is spent in meetings and walking into classrooms to see how much fun the children are having while learning.

Do you have a motto or saying that really resonates with you?

Common sense is the least common of senses.

Do you have a most memorable teacher moment?

I have memorable moments from every class I have taught, especially of things that the students have taught me. Being an educator has given me the privilege of being part of people’s learning journey and personal growth, which means that we create memorable moments every day.

Now it is our great pleasure to introduce you about Mr Mark Bridgeman. With 17 years of teaching and management experience, Mr Mark Bridgeman has worked as an English teacher and IELTS examiner in China, South Korea, and Turkey. He is also a Cambridge Teacher Trainer and an Evaluator for the Council of International Schools (CIS). He has been working closely with Mr Adam Harbinson since he joined us from February to ensure a smooth transition in Seniors. Mr Mark Bridgeman is very excited to work alongside with Head of Juniors Ms Priscila Perdomo and Director of Studies Mr Paul Joseph to ensure a constant high quality teaching and learning throughout the whole school. You will find more about him by our interview.

Where else in the world have you lived?

I have lived in England, Wales, Australia, South Korea, China (Guangzhou & Shanghai), Turkey, Uruguay and Tanzania

How do you find China is different from where you have lived?

China is a very unique and fascinating country, the thing I find most different and the thing I love the most is the diverse variety of delicious food.

What’s your favourite weekend activity in Shenzhen?

As I am new to Shenzhen I have not done much exploring, however, I am looking forward to finding some nice parks and places to walk my dog.

Did you always want to be a teacher?

No. My intention after university was to work in banking and finance, however, I did not find this satisfying. As a result, I transitioned into education and have never looked back.

Tell us about a hidden talent or a top secret that no-one would know about you.

It may not be a secret, but a little known fact about me is that I am 7% Scottish, so I feel very happy to be working at Merchiston International School.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party, dead or alive?

Muhammed Ali, Anthony Bourdain, Tupac Shakur, J.R.R. Tolkien and my late father.

What does a typical day at MIS look like for you?

At present, my day involves reading lots of documents, having introductory meetings with staff members and learning more about MIS. However, in future I hope my day will involve more time in the classrooms and interacting with students. Starting with gate duty each morning at 7:30am.

Do you have a motto or saying that really resonates with you?

“Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

Do you have a most memorable teacher moment?

Thankfully I have been fortunate enough to experience a plethora of memorable teaching moments in my twenty year career. Working in education has provided me with opportunities to meet some amazing people and being able to play even the smallest part in the educational journey of both students and teachers has been an absolute honour.

MISsive No. 10

IPC
