We follow an English curriculum specifically because of its rigour, its clear age related expectations, its global standing, its breadth and its depth.

We follow an English curriculum because of the challenge it provides.  Students have to learn, understand and recall but also apply their knowledge in different situations or contexts.

We’re often asked at Harrow Shenzhen, the differences between the British and American curriculums, so we thought we should take the opportunity to review some of the key comparisons here.

Throughout the United Kingdom, children begin their formal education by the age of 3-4. There is a British national curriculum that begins with AISL Harrow Early Years Curriculum framework that provides parents and educators a holistic framework of milestones and benchmarks where children are developmentally.

While it is play-based, it also begins formalised schooling and has an academic component. The curriculum emphasises that each child will develop in their own time, but that this is where the majority of children are at each stage of their development. The AISL Harrow Early Years Curriculum is set up in age and stage bands that purposefully overlap, and centre on developing all aspects of a young child, both socially and academically.

Typically, in the United States children may attend preschool, but formal schooling is not compulsory until children are 6 years of age, two years behind that of the UK. A key difference between these educational systems is that in the British curriculum, children learn their letter sounds (phonics) before letter names. This leads onto the development of reading and writing, with all children expected to secure all letter sounds by the age of 6 (when compulsory schooling begins in the US). There is a systematic approach to learning all 44 sounds before learning the name of the letters.

American schools and parents, tend to teach the name of the letter first and then the sounds are introduced later. In British schools, mark-making, or early writing, is highly encouraged and a deep level of mathematical understanding, such as all the ways that you can make 5, is focused on at a mastery level instead of a broader understanding and then moving on to higher numbers.

At Harrow we have adapted the UK curriculum to shape it to better meet the needs of our students, this means that we have increased the academic expectations further to support the students in achieving enhanced outcomes as they move into Year 1. Students leave reception at the age of 5 with this rich level of understanding, ready to progress into Year 1.

As children get older and move into primary school, the two systems are very similar in that the teachers offer a broad range of subjects, however the year groups in the British system are usually one year ahead, for example Year 2 in the UK is equivalent to Grade 1 in the American system.  The British curriculum is standardised to provide a clear outline of what is to be taught and by when, at Harrow this allows our practitioners to extend and advance students and assess accurately against international benchmarks which widely incorporate UK curriculum outcomes. In the UK there is end of Key Stage benchmarking, and similar to the US, this information is used to help shape the educational system.

At Harrow we go even further than this and we assess students against international benchmarks every year, to support our students to make accelerated progress.  These include GL and GSE assessments along with others. These externally verified assessments complement teacher assessments which take place during every term, throughout the academic year.

The philosophy with the British curriculum is to ensure that each learner does as well as they can and is challenged to progress above expected.

Why we choose IGCSE/A Level

We choose IGCSEs and A Levels over other High school examinations because of the greater depth of content involved.  For example A Levels often contain the first year of US university content.  Students can focus on their real passions and interests in taking their unique educational pathway towards higher education and high performing careers.  We choose them because they are the most rigorous and demanding university entrance qualifications.

Public examination outcomes from AISL Harrow Schools surpass those of other premium school groups across Asia. There are two AISL schools in the top 30 schools in the world for GCSE and A Level results. In 2023 there have been record numbers of AISL Harrow school children receiving offers from both Oxbridge and Ivy League schools.
