IBMYP RESEARCH ACTIVITY

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING AT NASSZ

THE WALKING CLASSROOM

A NEW PATHWAY TO PRACTICAL EDUCATION

IBMYP RESEARCH ACTIVITY

On October 8th, under the guidance of the Biology and English department teachers, students from NAS Shenzhen engaged in an MYP interdisciplinary research activity at the Shenzhen Wildlife Zoo. This collaborative event involved Biology and English subjects for students in Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, and Grade 9 elective Biology classes.

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING AT NASSZ

Biology is the study of life and living things. In G6 and G7 students are first studying about the smallest blocks of living things, cells and then will continue to study about biodiversity, habitats and food chains. In G8 students are learning to classify living things according to the Linnaean System and we are looking in depth at the different types of animal groups found on earth, both invertebrates and vertebrates. G8 also learn about evolution, adaptation and variation.

Our English classes are streamed, so students are improving their English from their own base levels. For their first unit, all the English classes are around the same topics that students are learning about in Biology. They read and wrote about different animals, habitats and environmental issues.  Students are thus able to connect what they have learned between the two subjects.

THE WALKING CLASSROOM

The best way to learn is by experiencing something for oneself. In our MYP Biology lessons, we offer students as many opportunities as possible to learn through experience. Knowledge is important, but if our students’ knowledge just comes from books, they are disconnected from it.

NASSZ teachers encourage students to link knowledge to their own lives and experiences. Students should also not only gain knowledge, but they should also be able to use this knowledge in different and new situations. This is also why collaboration between different subjects is so important. Everything in life is connected.

Visiting the Shenzhen Safari Park gave students a great opportunity for out of classroom learning. Our students can not only see the animals but also can be encouraged to think about how the animals are different from each other, the different habitats these animals need to survive in and how they are adapted to those habitats. Our English teachers provided booklets for students to make notes and answer questions to guide students to think about the topics that they have explored in both English and Biology while having a fun time in the Safari Park.

A NEW PATHWAY TO PRACTICAL EDUCATION

At NASSZ Shenzhen, our teaching extends beyond the traditional classroom to the outside world. The "Walking Classroom" is not just a place of learning, but also a new path for practical education. Students see a bigger world, broaden their horizons, and enrich their perspectives.

In the future, NASSZ hopes to establish stronger cultural confidence in students through even more diverse research and experiential learning activities. We want our students to take on topics, conduct research, and engage in practical experiences, learning the methodology of independent thinking and problem-solving.

If you would like to learn more about our courses, please feel free to scan the QR code for our October Open Day. We look forward to working together and nurturing a brighter future for our children!
