G10-Delving into the Depths of Resolution
This week, our Grade 10 physics students inquired into the principles of resolution and precision through a hands-on exploration that models sea floor surveying. Using a box to represent the vast sea and a string with a mass to mimic ancient depth measuring techniques, they mapped the "sea floor" inch by inch. By spacing out their measurements based on the diameter of the mass, they explored the intricacies of detail and resolution, seeing firsthand the impact of measurement precision on the final seabed profile. Upon revealing the actual profile inside the box, students could gauge the accuracy of their sketches, leading to discussions about the importance of resolution in various real-world applications, such as the evolution of screen technology. This immersive activity not only strengthened their understanding of theoretical concepts but also highlighted the relationship between observation and interpretation, making them appreciate the nuances of scientific investigations.
G3 UOI 1: Active Citizens
Jessica Yu from the ISNS marketing department was a guest speaker in grade 3 this week as part of UOI 1: Active Citizens. She shared her rich experiences working in the community to show a local example of an active citizen. She made strong connections to children's rights such as the right to healthy food, clean water and environment. Thank you to our caring community!
G11 Physics Class- Thermal Physics
Moving from mechanics, our Grade 11 physics students delved into thermal physics. Through a hands-on experiment, they distinguished between heat and temperature. Using data sensors and heaters, they learned that while temperature gauges the hotness of a body, heat signifies energy transfer. Why is this important? Thermal energy is pivotal in our world. It influences home designs, engine operations, and even plays a role in climate change discussions. By understanding these concepts, students can appreciate their real-world implications. This experiment seamlessly connected classroom theories to everyday applications, underscoring the relevance of thermal physics in the modern world.
High School 11th Graders' Ecological Survey
11th graders conducted an ecological survey in a nearby park for their IB biology unit on environmental studies. Guided by teachers, students identified plants and documented the park's ecosystem, practicing to expand their scientific skillset and fostering a deeper connection with nature and environmental responsibility.
A group of high school students have established a Korean culture club at school this year because at times they have found it difficult to maintain exchanges with other Korean students and feel connected to their culture. Their aim is to create an environment where there is a support network for Korean students, particularly for the younger ones because it is important they know that they have people on campus who they can communicate in their first language with and to share their culture.
This week the club held its first get together with students from Grade 1 - 11 and teachers joining to meet and introduce themselves. The Grade 1 students were very excited to talk to the middle and high school students in their first language and to share a lunch time snack with them. The club is looking forward to planning further activities in the future.
Ms. Pooni, a resident of Shenzhen, visited the grade 3 classes this week to introduce them to the important Indian holiday called Diwali. The holiday is celebrated in October or November and this year it will be celebrated on November 12th. She introduced the history and customs of the holiday and brought in homemade treats. She showed the students how to wear a sari and how to greet each other "Namaste". Thank you to Ms. Pooni for supporting our PYP students in being open-minded to other cultures and holidays.
ISNS Professional Development
We have some exciting news to share regarding our dedicated Early Years team. They recently attended the prestigious ACAMIS Early Years Conference, and it has equipped them with fresh insights and innovative strategies to enhance your child's educational journey.
Our educators delved into the concept of "Loose Parts," involving open-ended materials to spark creativity and problem-solving skills in children. Effective communication and collaboration with parents were key topics, strengthening our partnership with you. Additionally, they gained valuable insights on effective student observation and assessment to tailor learning to your child's unique needs.
Our Early Years team returned from the conference with renewed enthusiasm and a wealth of fresh ideas. These insights will benefit not only your child but also contribute to the overall growth and development of all our students.
ISNS attended this year's SISMUN conference over the past weekend. Our school sent a delegation of 20 high school students. The conference was a great success in promoting diplomacy and policy debates to aimed at solving the world's pressing issues, from human trafficking, to environemntral degredation. We had a record number of students chairing committees, with May W. and Mary L. both in G11 winning best delegate awards.
China Equestrian U Club Series Cup
ISNS ninth-grade student Luffy I delivered an outstanding performance in the 2023 "China Equestrian U Club Series Cup" and the 2023 Dongguan City Equestrian Open recently. He secured third place in the 80cm category and sixth place in the 110cm category. Luffy emphasized the importance of the smooth course navigation and the precision of the jumping, highlighting the need to focus on improving the quality of course completion, not just speed. On the award podium, he displayed his inner joy and satisfaction, stating that he would use the prize money to reward his horse. Well done Luffy!
International School Chess Tournament
A group of our talented students participated in the first round of a chess tournament yesterday. This event brought together nearly 90 international schools from across Asia, with a pool over 300 players. ISNS entered a team of 15 players to represent our school, and we achieved an outstanding placement among the top 7 schools. The tournament begins with three qualifying rounds, which will determine the top teams that will advance to the final tournament round. The next round will take place on November 23rd, where our players aim to move up the rankings. Thank you to the students, Mr. James LeBreton, and Mr. James Baglole for all your hard work!
TI Tips: Never Do the Following
on Public Wi-fi
Welcome to our weekly technology tips, designed to help make your online life easier.
Technology Integration Coordinator
We all use public wi-fi. It might be at a coffee shop or restaurant, the airport or a shopping mall. The thing is hackers love to use public networks as an easy way to steal your private information. Though some networks are safer to use than others, be mindful about what you do in public.
Never Do the Following on Public Wi-fi
1. Don’t create a new account. These require you to enter private information.
2. Don’t submit payment details such as credit card numbers or secure codes.
3. Don’t use online banking. The last thing you need is someone to gain access to your finances.
4. Don’t login to anything requiring a secure password.
5. Don’t verify your identity (password, government ID).
6. Remember, never leave your device alone.
One solution when on a public wi-fi is to use a VPN. VPNs make you invisible on the network and encrypt your data to protect it. Public wi-fi should be treated with caution and ideally only used with VPN encryption.
