2023 ISNS Annual Caring & Bullying Awareness Week

ISNS

In line with this year's theme, "Splashing Against Bullying.” The theme communicates an active and energetic response to bullying, encouraging individuals to stand up, take action, and make a positive difference. We are organizing different activities to celebrate and raise awareness about bullying prevention.Students had the opportunity to participate in a poster competition, showcasing their creativity and spreading messages of kindness. A caring photo booth provided a fun space for students to capture moments of friendship and compassion. The Color Fun Activity left an impression, highlighting the importance of kindness and respect while promoting a fun-filled atmosphere. A lunchtime music performance set a positive and uplifting atmosphere and the glass walls of caring allowed students to express their thoughts and support for one another. Lastly, the splash against note-writing activity encouraged students to write uplifting messages on colorful notes as a gesture of kindness. These activities collectively emphasized the importance of empathy, respect, and standing against bullying.

Grade 9 Science - We’ve got the Power

This week, Grade 9 physics students explored the concept of power using fun activities like curling, push-ups, and stair climbing. Students enjoyed the hands-on approach, finding it both engaging and authentic. Before starting, they predicted the outcomes. After performing the activities, they compared their predictions to the actual results and discussed the differences. This genuine experience not only made learning enjoyable but also allowed students to internalize the principles of power, emphasizing the value of hands-on learning in understanding physics concepts.

G3 Field Trip

Our grade 3 students recently embarked on an exciting field trip to the Ping An building in Shenzhen as part of our structures unit. It was an incredible opportunity for our students to explore strong and stable structures.

During the trip, our students had the chance to witness the impressive Ping An building, one of the tallest skyscrapers globally. They learned about the different architectural elements that make buildings strong and stable, such as beams, columns, and foundations. Additionally, they were fascinated by the wind damper, a feature that helps the building withstand strong winds.

The field trip provided hands-on experiences and sparked our students' curiosity about architecture and engineering. We are thrilled to see their enthusiasm for learning and their deeper understanding of structures.

G11-EE Quick Chat Activity

The extended essay (EE) is a required component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It is an independent piece of research, culminating with a 4,000-word paper. The extended essay provides practical preparation for undergraduate research. As the Grade 11s embark on their EE journey, they participate in our annual “EE Quick Chat” sessions. This is an opportunity for Grade 11 students to speak with our faculty and the Grade 12 cohort about what to expect during the EE process. The Grade 12 students share their experiences with the EE and the faculty provide subject specific guidance to the students to support them in choosing an appropriate subject and topic that suit their interests. The Grade 11 students apply what they learn from the EE Quick Chats to solidify their EE subject and topic choices. Having a strong research focus is an essential element of a successful EE. As a caring and collaborative community, we enthusiastically support our Grade 11s as they start this rigorous core element of the Diploma Programme.

G7 Science Field Trip

This Friday, our 7th grade students embarked on an exciting field trip to the Shenzhen Dapeng Peninsula Geopark Museum. This educational excursion provided a unique opportunity to delve into a multitude of exhibits that vividly displayed the geological history and diverse landforms of the remarkable Dapeng Peninsula. By connecting what students had learned in their science class to the real world, this field trip became an unforgettable adventure that not only expanded their knowledge of geology but also cultivated a profound appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

G9 Enlish Lang&Lit Class-Persuasive Speech

The grade 9 class are currently giving speeches in class about something that bothers them and how they would like to see it fixed. It is a persuasive speech and the students need to introduce the topic, explain why it’s a problem, create their ideal world where it is not a problem, and then establish a call-to-action that is doable and realistic to achieve the dream world. We do this every year in ninth grade and it is a fun and engaging experience for the students.

K5 - Gr 9/10 Collaboration Design Project

The collaborative project between kindergarten 5 (K5) and Grades 9 and 10 students in Toy Design goes beyond crafting 3D-printed Lego train cars—a testament to innovative education. The younger students showcase creativity, imagination, and planning skills in designing toys, while the high school students, acting as mentors, employ advanced skills like questioning, interviewing, and problem-solving to guide and refine the K5 students' ideas.

The project's emphasis on empathy is noteworthy, with the grade 9 and 10 students demonstrating technical prowess and a high level of emotional intelligence. The connection established between the older and younger students contributes to a positive school culture, fostering a sense of community and enhancing interpersonal skills.

While the tangible outcome of 3D-printed toys is anticipated, the true value lies in intangible benefits—improved communication, empathy, and a shared sense of accomplishment. This collaborative effort exemplifies the power of hands-on, cross-grade projects in education, enriching students' understanding of design while instilling vital life skills and values.

Tencent Educational Technology Fair

ISNS Students had a blast at the Tencent Educational Technology Fair on Tuesday! They explored exciting career paths, witnessed mind-blowing tech like naked-eye 3D (the future of video calls!), and learned how self-driving car tech can revive ancient artifacts. It was an awesome peek into the future of tech!

"It was a pleasant experience, with a lot of experiences that were interesting. I was personally interested in 3D views without glasses, which was fascinating because it allowed us to feel like that person was right in front of us, even when they were in fact miles away. Overall, I thought this festival was a good experience for me to decide my career."

ACAMIS Technology Conference

Last weekend, six ISNS educators attended the ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools) Tech Conference in Tianjin. This year the talks and workshops focused on the emergence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in education. The dynamic and informative environment provided technology leaders an opportunity to share in-depth discussions about AI's role in international education; actively participate in using AI; collaboratively build and code robotics; and share innovative tech ideas and apps. Prathap Sakar, one of ISNS’s Technology Design teachers, presented a well-received workshop that introduced multi-subject Immersive Storytelling via a 3D visualization program.

The Battle of the Peak:

A Tale of Victory in Our School’s Boys Volleyball Match

On the afternoon of October 16th, a thrilling scene was unfolding inside the ISNS gymnasium...

Tick-tock, tick-tock... Time was ticking away.

He stood confidently on the court, unperturbed by the surrounding noise. His gaze fixed firmly on the opposing team's defense, as if the championship was already in the bag. This was the final round of the high school boy's volleyball match between Shekou International School (SIS) and International School of Nanshan (ISNS), a moment where sweat and effort were about to pay off.

He took a deep breath, extended his arms. With a powerful push forward from his legs, his tall and strong body soared into the air. With a resounding "thwack," the ball, which had been hanging in mid-air, shot out like lightning, catching everyone off guard.

"Thud." The ground let out a muffled groan as the meteor-like ball narrowly missed the white net and landed within the opposing team's boundary lines. With the referee's whistle, our highschoolers' volleyball team sounded the horn of victory. In an instant, the entire gymnasium erupted with deafening applause and cheers, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the hardworking athletes.

On the court, all players embraced each other, shedding tears of joy for this hard-earned victory. They did not disappoint their efforts, as it was the first victory over the SIS boys' volleyball team since the outbreak of the pandemic in international school sports events.

Today, this group of boys, carrying the dream of a great championship, came one step closer to their goal.

When ISNS volleyball setter Daniel Wang recalled this match, he said, "This was the pinnacle battle for us this year. In the past five matches, our team only lost one, and each player's performance has clearly improved. In the upcoming matches, we will continue to focus on defensive strategies and scoring through serves. Undeniably, winning this match is a milestone on our path to the championship."
