Dear families,

As we approach the midpoint of the academic year, several key milestones are on the horizon. Several academic units will draw close, accompanied by summative assessments and mock examinations. Additionally, we can celebrate student creativity in our upcoming art showcases. Primary students will also be engaged in Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing. These milestones are instrumental in assessing our educational progress and celebrating our students' achievements. Like being a parent, I don't imagine it is easy to be a student. Your praise for your child's hard work over the first semester is essential for their continued growth and well-being.

• Affirmation of Worth: "You are valuable, and your thoughts and feelings matter." Affirming a child's worth helps build their self-esteem and sense of belonging.

• Acknowledgement of Effort: "I see how hard you're working, and I'm proud of your effort." Recognizing effort rather than just achievement encourages a growth mindset and resilience.

• Openness to Communication: "You can talk to me about anything. I'm here to listen." Keeping communication channels open assures children a safe space to express themselves.

• Encouragement of Strengths: "Your kindness/creativity/intelligence is inspiring." Focusing on a child's strengths fosters confidence and a positive self-image.

• Reassurance of Unconditional Support: "No matter what happens, I love you and will support you." Unconditional support provides a secure foundation for children to explore and navigate their world.

International Mindedness

Those new to SIS may not know, but the PSA ran the entire school bazaar a few years ago. When we introduced the IBO Primary Years Programme, we revised the intention of the event, introduced opportunities for parents to offer cultural understandings in the school, renamed it, and SIS took on the event responsibility.

As we lead up to the SIS International Winter Bazaar, the intention is that it serves as a celebration of our diverse community. We invite you to visit classrooms to share and celebrate culture and diversity. This is important for several reasons:

• Inclusive Community Building: It fosters a sense of belonging and inclusiveness among the school community, showing that all cultural backgrounds are valued and respected.

• Educational Experience: It provides an educational experience for students and parents, allowing everyone to learn about different cultures, traditions, and perspectives.

• Parental Engagement: Such events encourage parental engagement with the school, linked to improved student achievement and well-being.

• Role Modelling: It demonstrates to students that their identities are important, as parents and school staff act as role models in embracing and celebrating diversity.

• Cultural Exchange: It allows for cultural exchange and dialogue, broadening students' worldviews and preparing them for a globalized world.

• Mutual Respect: Celebrating culture and diversity promotes mutual respect and understanding, which is essential for a harmonious school environment and society.

Our goal is to continue to create a more dynamic, empathetic, and globally aware community by celebrating culture and diversity. Below are some past examples of our community coming together to celebrate all that we are.
