James Li先生是哈佛华南校友会的联合主席，也是学校和奖学金委员会主席。他拥有哈佛大学的学士学位，以及牛津大学和芝加哥大学的硕士学位。James先生热衷于教育。他是北京蒲公英学校(一所农民工子弟中学)的董事，并曾在清华大学和浙江大学任教。他也在清华大学苏世民学院和长江商学院担任导师。

James Li serves as the Co-President of the Harvard Club of South China, and is the Schools & Scholarship Committee Chair. James holds an AB from Harvard College, in addition to master's degrees from Oxford and the University of Chicago. James is a fervent advocate for education. He is trustee of the Dandelion School in Beijing, a middle school for migrant workers children, and has taught at Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University. Additionally, he is a mentor at the Schwarzman College at Tsinghua and CKGSB.

Standardised test scores do not directly affect your admission. Harvard University is more interested in applicants who demonstrate personality, intelligence, leadership, and community involvement. Demonstrate how he/she can bring positive energy to those around him/her.

互动环节，学生及家长们积极主动地和James先生交流申请时的困惑。

问：“作为一所英式学校，哈罗深圳以A-Level作为教学体系，哈佛大学接受A-Level成绩申请吗？除了考iGCSE外，还需要考SAT来申请哈佛大学吗？”

James先生说到A-Level成绩也可以申请哈佛大学！根据哈罗学校的声望，哈罗深圳的学生会被默认为精通英语，并且其家庭也具有经济实力支持他们参加标准化考试。SAT成绩是反映学生众多素质的一个因素。

问：“大学先修课程（AP）是否是申请必须提交的？”

James先生在现场说到，大学先修课程 (AP)并不是必修。

问：“写个人文书时，我该找外部资源来辅助吗？”

James先生认为个人文书应当是诚挚且真实的。招生委员会已经阅读了无数的个人陈述，他们能够判断一篇文章是由申请者亲笔写的，还是请人执笔代写。

你最了解自己，且哈罗深圳升学指导老师、你的父母和那些最了解你的人，很可能比你想象的更可以挖掘你的闪光点。例如你在一些项目或者社团活动中表现出来的领导力是有加分的。一篇优质的个人文书需润色很多次。

问：“大学举办的夏校值得去吗？”

在James先生看来，参加大学预备项目（夏校）对被录取可能并没有很大帮助——除非该学校的录取率极低，这种情况也并不常见。夏校在帮助学生提前感受大学生活上有显著的作用。

问：“如果有未完成的项目探究课题，我是否应该提交给招生委员会？”

James先生鼓励学生提交能够展示自己独特性和能生动地代表自己的材料。如果你现在有未完成的课题，那么你要尽可能的去完成它，毕竟现在你还有时间。例如，与其长篇大论地罗列出10项个人爱好，招生委员会更希望看到申请者深度参与的几个活动和课题，以及申请者对拓展、延申这些所做出的行动。这能更生动地勾勒出申请者的画像，谨记质量重于数量。

问：“哈佛大学是否设有奖学金？”

哈佛大学实行 “需求回避” 的招生政策，指在招生时不考虑学生的经济能力。在招生决策过程中，绝不会考虑学生是否来自特殊背景并曾给予过学校支持，所有学生都是平等的。一旦学生被录取，学校将帮助其解决财务问题。

问：”哈佛大学的课堂架构是怎么样的？我如何知道自己是否适合哈佛大学？“

哈佛大学的讲座由教授授课，随后由研究生授课。本科毕业班规模不大，每年控制在1640人左右。

美国学校重视全人教育。James先生分享的一个建议是，除了与升学指导老师交流外，也可和哈佛在读生和校友交谈。他们会让你最好地了解在哈佛学习是什么样的。申请者不应该总是对比学校之间的“好”与“坏”，而应当从多方面了解哪所学校更适合自己。

学生在考虑申请哪些大学时，他们需要找到最适合他们的学校。一个符合他们的理想、能满足他们的需求、适合他们的个性，且在学术和理性上能帮助他们成长的大学。

我很高兴能在2024年1月开始，帮助12年级的学生们撰写个人文书，并在此过程中找到自己真实的声音。正如James Li先生所说，个人文书是学生自己撰写的文书，应当真实反映学生的情况。任何一所大学，哈佛也不例外，都想要招收到独立思考者，以及有深度和强度的高知人才。学生需要对周围的世界充满好奇，只有这样才能取得成功。

In this session, students and parents took the initiative to communicate with James about the confusion during the application process.

Q: "Given that Harrow Shenzhen is a British school that focuses on A-Levels, is taking the SAT as an addition to the iGCSE required when applying to Harvard?"

James shares that A-Level results can also apply to Harvard University! As a Harrow student, it will be assumed that the applicant will be well-versed in English and be financially equipped to take standardised tests.The test scores are a factor reflecting the many qualities of a student.

Q: " Are AP Programmes required?"

Advanced Placement courses are not required.

Q: "When writing the Personal Statement essay, should I seek external support?"

A personal statement essay should be sincere. Admissions Committees read countless essays, therefore, they will be able to tell if an essay was written by the applicant themselves or with external help.

You are the one who knows yourself the best, and those closet to you, such as your school counselor, your parents and other supporters are probably more resourceful than you may realise. For example, your leadership in some projects or community activities can be rewarded. A well-written essay should be edited numerous times.

Q: "Are the Pre-College Summer School Programs worth going to?"

Attending Pre-College Summer School programs will not help your likelihood of being admitted – unless the school has extremely low acceptance rates, which is not common. Summer School programs are helpful for you to experience university life in advance.

Q:“If I have an unfinished project, should I submit it for the Admissions Committee to consider?”

James encourages students to submit material that showcases themselves as unique and holistic. If you have unfinished projects now, then you should try your best to complete them, after all, you still have time.

For example, rather than listing 10 personal hobbies, the Admissions Committees would much rather see a list of 5 activities in which the applicant is deeply involved, as well as the actions the applicant has taken to expand and extend these activities. This displays meaningfulness and context about the candidate. Thus, the concept of quality over quantity is reinforced.

Q: " Are there any scholarship programmes at Harvard?"

Harvard has a need-blind admissions policy, meaning that students are accepted to Harvard without consideration of their ability to pay. Admission decisions are in no way linked to support received by the University for students from specific backgrounds. Once students are admitted, their financial need is met by the University.

Q:“What is the class structure like at Harvard? How do I know if Harvard is the right fit for me? "

Lectures at Harvard are taught by professors and subsequently teaching by graduate students. The undergraduate class size is not large and is limited to 1640 students each year.

American schools strongly embrace the holistic approach. One suggestion shared by James is that, in addition to speaking with the college counselor, you can reach out to current students and alumni. They will give you the best idea of what it is like to study at Harvard. It is not about which school is “better” than the other, but finding which school suits you the most.

When students are researching universities, they need to find places that fit them. An institution that fits their ideals, fits their needs, fits their personalities and fits them academically and intellectually.

I am excited in January to be starting with the Year 12s in supporting them finding their authentic voices in writing their application essays. As James Li said, the essay is from the student and should be authentic. Any university, and Harvard is no exception, wants independent thinkers and intellectuals who have strength and depth - students need to be curious about the world around them and they will succeed.
