Grade 5 Simple Machines STEM Lab


Our Grade 5 students have begun their new IB Unit of Inquiry to explore the engineering and physics of simple machines. At ISNS, hands-on investigation is a key component of the learning process. For this experience, our technology integration team collaborated closely with the homerooms to create an immersive, hands-on engineering STEM Lab using the VEX GO robotics system.















First, in order foster maximum collaboration and prepare the students for their upcoming PYPx grade-wide showcase, all three grade 5 classes came together and split into 3 new lab groups. Three separate VEX GO STEM Labs were then developed, each centered around a different simple machine (Incline Plane, Lever, and Wheel and Axle).


On Lab day, excited students got the chance to build their simple machine using VEX GO robotics. 


With their partner, they then tested and investigated the key forces and motion concept their machine exhibited. The hands-on, investigative nature of the lab allowed the students to experience the learning as opposed to just or study it. The data collected during the test phase also allows for some fun and impactful data and measurement math lesson extensions, too.




As our students dive into their exploration, they are not only uncovering the intricacies of simple machines but also laying a solid foundation for future technological pursuits. This hands-on approach to learning aligns seamlessly with global initiatives like Hour of Code, which seeks to introduce students to the exciting world of computer programming and coding.

Just as they manipulate physical components in our STEM Lab, our students will be able to navigate the digital landscape, further enriching their educational journey and preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow's technology-driven world.

五年级简易机械STEM实验室

当我们的学生深入探索时,他们不仅揭开了简单机器的复杂性,而且为未来的技术追求奠定了坚实的基础。这种动手实践的学习方式与由学生主导的“编程一小时”(Hour of Code)活动无缝契合,编程一小时带领学生进入计算机编程和编码世界。
