The word "coffee" originates from the Greek word "Kaweh" meaning "Strength and Passion." In the 16th century, the world's first coffeehouse, "Kaveh Kanes" was set up in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
From then, coffeehouses were introduced to Oxford University, a center of academia in Europe, becoming a place for exchange of ideas. When coffeehouses appeared in Paris, they became the cradle of salon art and the French Revolution. And when the fragrant aroma of coffee rose at the White Rose Café in New York, it turned into a "storm field" of thought for physicists Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee, where notable academic achievements came to fruition.
Just as Cambridge has the River Cam, Peking University has the Weiming Lake, and Wuhan University has its cherry blossoms, each of these landscapes has nurtured a dynamic and romantic campus culture.
M1833, a café with an inherent British cultural background has become a part of the MIS community. It’s a place for sipping coffee, engaging in creative activities, communicating & exchanging ideas, and welcoming our visitors, which will infuse this elegant and refined campus with new vitality.
From the brand logo to the coffee cup design, and the meticulous British-style decor, every aspect of M1833 exudes a unique charm that highlights the brand's character. A wall of display windows neatly showcases nearly 200 years of MIS's historical and cultural heritage, along with various cultural and creative products. The sound of reading aloud imbue the café with a rich humanistic atmosphere, while the diverse range of cultural and creative items add a profound historical depth to the coffee shop.
In the eyes of the teachers and students of MIS, coffee is a medium that connects all sparks related to thoughts. Sometimes when classes finish and the bell rings, teachers and students gather at M1833. They sit in a circle, chatting and laughing, enjoying their coffee, or igniting creative inspiration, or exchanging academic views. The brainstorming will bring fresh ideas and inspiration, which showcases MIS's educational philosophy of "Academic excellence and warm education".
However, as an open space, M1833 occasionally steps out of the "artistic" label, not emphasizing social and cultural attributes, quietly catering to the different needs of customers, allowing them to enjoy a moment of comfort during their brief coffee time.
"Not to set a predetermined direction,
but to let it grow with freedom."
This is not only the positioning of M1833, but also a reflect of our holistic education philosophy.
At MIS, we see each child as a "seed" full of infinite possibilities. We won't be setting a predefined "blooming period", nor defining children, instead, we aim to provide "sunshine and nurturing soil" that our children need for growth. Through an open and encouraging educational approach, we let children freely explore and find their own path.
"In the gentle waves of Cambrigde, I am willing to be a water plant!" A hundred years ago, the poet Xu Zhimo affectionately declared his farewell to his alma mater, Cambridge University. We also look forward to seeing how great our students are turning into when they choose to study in MIS, we believe their life here will be a wonderful memory in the future.
