'How are the subjects taught at BMH?'
'What is the curriculum plan for the subjects throughout the term?'
'How can I tutor my child at home?'
At the start of a new school year, parents often have numerous queries regarding their children's curriculum and want to gain deeper insight into school life.
Therefore, BMH is currently running a series of 'Parent Workshops'. These workshops offer parents the chance to learn more about the school's approach to teaching and learning.
See, Think, Wonder
Inquiry Workshop
We were delighted to welcome our BMH Prep School parents to the first in our series of parent workshops. ‘See, Think, Wonder: Exploring Inquiry at BMH’ was led by Ms Smith (Head of Inquiry and Computing). It proved to be a very collaborative and practical session during which the parents participated in many activities and challenges.
The aim of the workshop was to highlight the knowledge and critical thinking skills acquired by pupils through Inquiry teaching. The Unit of Inquiry Cycle was broken down into its 4 parts (Initial Engagement, Exploration, Investigation and Communication) and the teaching strategies and methodologies used by our BMH team were explained.
During each stage of the explanation, Ms Smith involved the parents in a range of games and tasks which highlighted the key transdisciplinary skills used and developed by our pupils throughout each Unit of Inquiry (Research, Thinking, Social, Communication and Self-Management skills). This allowed the parents to immerse themselves in the learning experience of our pupils and understand the benefits of this approach to teaching.
The ultimate aim of teaching through an Inquiry-based approach is for our pupils to become 21st Century Thinkers with the ability to analyse, evaluate, make connections and reflect. The pupils strengthen their ability to understand different viewpoints, make informed decisions and communicate effectively.
We would like to extend our thanks to the parents who attended this workshop and participated with such great enthusiasm. We will be holding further Inquiry Parent Workshops and Learn With Your Child sessions later this term so please check our channels of communication for information and dates.
The BMH Way
English Workshop
We recently hosted an engaging parent workshop, English - The BMH Way, led by our Head of English, Ms Rebecca Sims. This interactive session was designed not just to inform, but to immerse parents in the vibrant world of our English programme.
During the workshop, parents discovered how our English curriculum is meticulously structured, offering a blend of writing, reading, and phonics that ensures every pupil thrives. Parents left with newfound insights into how we nurture their children’s language skills and the innovative strategies we use to keep our standards high.
The workshop featured two engaging activities that truly brought the curriculum to life. In our first activity, parents participated in a speaking and listening exercise, where they chose an animal they identified with and shared their reasons with the group. This reflective exercise mirrors how we encourage our pupils to express themselves and think creatively, fostering oral language skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Next, parents experienced the excitement of our phonics lessons! We kicked off with a lively demonstration using flashcards, followed by a team-based game where parents collaborated to identify sounds. The energy in the room was palpable, as everyone joined in the fun while learning more about how phonics instruction works.
To wrap up the session, parents had the chance to visit our Prep 1/2 and Prep 4 classrooms for a sneak peek into their children’s learning environments. It was a fantastic opportunity to witness firsthand the engaging and supportive atmosphere we cultivate at BMH.
A heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended! Your involvement is invaluable to us, and we eagerly anticipate hosting more workshops in the future. Stay tuned for exciting upcoming events that will further enrich our community!
