Shenzhen is “the City of Reading”. In November of every year is Shenzhen Reading Month. This year coincides with the 25th Shenzhen Reading Month. It is also the 3rd reading month of MIS Library. This year our theme is "Bringing the Joy of Reading to Everyone". We arranged the following activities catering for students at different ages and learning stages encourage our kids to learn from books.
We firmly believe that having a passion for reading is an indispensable foundation if we want our children to become global citizens with international pespectives.
For children aged 3-6 (KS1)
The key to reading is to stimulate interest in reading. For children at this stage, everything is new. Attracting children's attention through interesting picture book stories and rich reading forms, allowing them to enjoy reading in a pleasant atmosphere is enough. Therefore, the library has planned activities: "Librarian Story Time", "Mini Story Theater (Paper Drama)", "Library Musical Chairs", and "Reading with Library Dolls". The "Librarian Story Time " in the week 1 brought the children read the classic picture book Where the Wild Things are, The story leads the children to feel the wonderful fantasy world of the young protagonist in the book and the emotional changes after getting angry. Thereby stimulating imagination and trying to understand their emotions in daily life.
The upcoming activity for the week 2 is "Paper Drama" which originates from Japan. It is a form of storytelling presented and performed through picture card,Nowadays, it is mostly used in Children's Libraries and Picture Book Museum.
For children aged 7-12 (KS2)
For children aged 7-12 (KS2),At this stage, children can distinguish the real and imagined world. The key to reading is to develop good reading habits. Our school has one reading class every week for EY-Y6. During the reading class, they will come to the library to read and borrow and return books, through continuous reading and extensive exploration of reading content (Y3-Y6 must read one fiction and one non -fiction book each time), So as to enrich their knowledge reserve.
If kids can make creative output on the basis of reading, they will get more effective reading habits. Therefore, the library has planned activities for them: "Dice Question about a Book", "100 Tiny Things to Write about", "Find a Poem to Read", "1 Book Challenge ", and design a special little book every week. Expand reading from speaking, reading, writing and drawing.
These activities can help children develop solid and good reading habits. In the first week, "DIY Art Explosion Book" and "1 Book Challenge" were carried out.
For seniors students and faculty
For seniors students and faculty, the activity of the reading month is "1 book challenge". You can get a beautiful prize by reading a book and writing a book review this month.
For teenagers and faculty, they have basic judgment and choice ability and interest orientation. This activity just wants everyone to get rid of the fragmented network information and busy work and study for a short time. Slow down, immerse themselves deeply in the books, relax the body, soothe the soul, and then realize the importance of reading, exercise their own thinking ability, and express their own opinions. Many teachers and students participated in this activity in the first week. They generally think it is meaningful, recognize the benefits of reading, and hope that they can continue to read in the future.
In short, a book lying quietly on the shelf is worthless. Whether our children can broaden their horizons, think independently and be more creative depends on…all these are inseparable from reading and the nourishment of good books.
This reading promotion month is an opportunity, by encouraging everyone to explore the vast world of books, we can extend the breadth and depth of knowledge, thus promoting everyone's spiritual growth and cultivating reading habits. We hope that through these rich activities, we can guide everyone to focus on books, enjoy reading and grow up in reading. And make progress in thinking.
In the future, our school will continue to explore more innovative ways to promote reading to become a daily habit for more teachers and students, so that the fragrance of books will accompany every step of growth.
Have a good day! And enjoy reading!
