ENGLISH VERSION

Good morning, everyone, and welcome back to Shenzhen Academy of International Education!

I hope you all had a wonderful two-week vacation. Now, as we return, we enter a pivotal two-week stretch that will close out Fall 2024 and usher in Spring 2025. These weeks are a time for focus, reflection, and preparation as we transition into the new year.

2025 is not just another year; it’s a milestone. It marks a quarter of a century into the 21st century—a century defined by rapid, transformative change. We are living in the era of the AI-led Fourth Industrial Revolution. The future ahead is amazing, exciting, and perhaps even a little intimidating. This new age challenges us to rethink what education means and for each of you to reconsider how you approach learning.

In this revolution, creativity, critical thinking, and the ability to learn continuously are far more important than the specific content you memorize in school. As knowledge becomes more accessible, your capacity to think and adapt will be the most valuable tools you carry into the future.

2025 will also be a defining year for many of you. For our graduating class, it will bring the long-awaited college acceptance letters, a landmark achievement on your educational journey. For all of us, it is a chance to reflect on progress and set bold goals for the future.

I often remind my students of Alexander the Great, who at just 33 years old had conquered the known world. At the moment of his ultimate triumph, instead of celebrating, he wept because there were no more worlds to conquer. Now, most of you are half his age or less. The question is: where are we on our path to greatness?

Greatness, however, isn’t achieved all at once. It begins with small, consistent steps. Right now, our immediate challenge lies ahead in the form of final exams. So, how do we meet this challenge?

The answer is simple: Be present.

Being present means embracing mindfulness. Life throws countless distractions our way—emotions, ups and downs, social interactions, and unpredictability. We are social creatures, and our connections with others can influence our mental state. To succeed, however, we must learn to focus amidst the noise. This is where mindfulness becomes critical.

As many of you know, I teach Physics here at SAIE. Physics, they say, requires a borderline genius to master—especially when tackling topics like quantum mechanics. The truth is, you don’t need to be a genius. What you do need is the ability to protect your working memory from mental interference.

Why? Solving physics problems often requires you to juggle five or six concepts at the same time. Our brains, remarkable as they are, can only hold about seven things in working memory at once. If your mind is clouded with fear, overthinking, or unnecessary distractions, your ability to problem-solve diminishes significantly.

This principle doesn’t just apply to Physics; it applies to every high-stakes learning task, from the TOEFL to the SAT. Your working memory must be operating at 100% to perform at your best.

So how do we ensure that? By being present. By practicing mindfulness.

Mindfulness is about grounding yourself in the moment. It’s about letting go of what’s outside your control—whether it’s the past, the future, or the opinions of others—and focusing entirely on the task at hand.

When you study for finals, don’t let anxiety about results consume you. Instead, immerse yourself in the process of understanding and solving the problems before you. When you sit for exams, don’t let fear or self-doubt occupy your thoughts. Instead, center your mind on the questions and trust in the preparation you’ve done.

Here’s a practical way to start: Before you dive into studying or exams, take five deep breaths. As you breathe, tell yourself: I am here. I am ready. I will give my best effort. This simple practice can help reset your mind and improve focus.

Being present is not just about academic performance; it’s a life skill. It’s what will allow you to navigate the complexities of the future with clarity and confidence.

As we embark on this two-week stretch, I challenge each of you to embrace the theme of this month: Be present, Presence for Performance.

Let’s commit to showing up—not just physically but mentally—for every class, every study session, and every moment that shapes who we are becoming. Let’s protect our working memory, focus on what matters, and work toward the greatness we are all capable of achieving.

Thank you, and I wish you all a successful, mindful, and productive start to 2025!
