Emerson Chua is a proud Gecko Alum, currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and working as a Marketing Specialist in the Enterprise Banking division of a local bank, AFFIN BANK.

An SIS Gecko from 2011 to 2015, Emerson completed Grade 10 and went directly into the foundation program at one of Malaysia’s top private universities, Taylor's University Lakeside Campus (TULC). He majored in International Business and Marketing (IBM) and holds a certification in Business Management with Marketing from the University of the West of England (UWE), a partner university of TULC. Emerson has shared his journey with us, and the impact that his SIS education had on his career and personal trajectory.

Tell us what encouraged you into this degree and how you envision your future contributions in this area.

Before deciding on my major, I was enrolled in the Foundation in Business program at TULC, which allowed me to explore various aspects of business. I have always been drawn to creative activities and tasks, so when I was introduced to marketing, I immediately developed a strong interest in the field.

The business faculty at TULC offered two marketing-related majors to choose from: one solely focused on Marketing and the other on International Business and Marketing (IBM). Since both programs had similar tuition fees and I wanted to broaden my knowledge, choosing IBM as my major was a logical decision.

I am now aiming to enhance my professional skill set in digital marketing, specifically in social media content creation and media buy. I believe this will help me achieve a higher position in branding and communication or product development.

What exposure or experiences at SIS shaped your character and supported you towards this career?

There are a few experiences that helped me greatly:

• The extra English classes, which improved my speaking and writing skills in English.

• The public speaking class, which encouraged me to speak more confidently in English.

• Participating in the Cross Country ACAMIS during my freshman and sophomore years, where I was awarded MVP in my freshman year and broke my personal record in my sophomore year.

These experiences helped me become more confident and believe in my ability to achieve great things.

Who at SIS made a particular impact on you and how?

There were four specific individuals from SIS who had a great impact on me: Ms. Andrea Felker, Mr. William Yung, Ms. Meaghan Wilson, and fellow classmate Pravesh Gupta (who is currently Project Manager in the CEO’s Department at OPPO, Shenzhen).

Ms. Felker and Mr. Yung were always there for me in English, providing not only guidance but also the patience to ensure I fully understood what was taught.

As a Chinese student born and raised in Malaysia, moving to China and adapting to Western culture was challenging. However, Ms. Wilson and Pravesh helped me feel included and at home. Pravesh took the initiative to become my first friend at SIS and always supported me in adjusting to the new culture. Ms. Wilson showed great care for her students, always ensuring that each one was well taken care of.

Both of them made me feel that, despite our differences in race and background, we are all the same.

What specific skills or aptitudes did you develop as a result of studying at SIS and through the clubs and sports you joined?

The learning outside of classes developed my mindset which impacts me to this day, namely, my two seasons in ACAMIS for Cross Country taught me that consistency is the key to great success.

This lesson kept me motivated during university, enabling me to graduate successfully. Now, in my career, I have a clearer vision of what I want and am aiming to achieve even greater heights.

What insights can you offer to younger students to support them in their academic and future trajectory?

There are a few things everyone should know:

• Consistency leads to success.

• Feeling lost is normal; take the time to find a clear direction in your career, studies, or any aspect of life.

• Stress is a natural part of life, but it’s important to give yourself a break and talk to someone when needed.
