The transition from Grade 5 to Middle School is a momentous journey, and at SIS, this process is thoughtfully designed to empower students through immersive experiences and collaborative support.
Living Net Valley:
Exploring New Horizons
The G5 transition began with the students first visit to Net Valley, "Living Net Valley." Students explored the campus, met their G6 buddies, and joined a scavenger hunt, discovering composting with worms. The visit concluded with a lively Middle School Assembly led by the Student Council, offering a glimpse into their future community.
SIS fosters social and emotional growth, emphasising community, pastoral care, and a buddy system to support a smooth transition.
Learning Net Valley:
Confidence and Independence
The second phase, "Learning Net Valley," focuses on academic readiness. Students navigated the campus independently using personalised schedules, attended sample classes, and connected with their future teachers and peers. This experience strengthened their confidence in managing routines and adapting to a more independent learning environment, setting the stage for a smooth transition in the coming year.
As part of their holistic transition experience, G5 students visit the secondary school to participate in exciting programmes such as the Design Arcade and introductory workshops for the MYP Personal Project.
The third transition visit, "Leaping to Net Valley," is scheduled for May 7th. It includes further learning experiences at Net Valley to foster independence, including a Design Challenge.
Language Pathways:
Personalised Support
Behind the scenes, the transition team ensured academic alignment. EAL Programme Lead Ms. Celina Mathews and Language & Literature Lead Ms. Erin Garnhum collaborated with the many members of the Primary team, including the G5 teachers, to review student data and tailor MYP language pathways. Their collaborative efforts ensure that each student is placed in best fit courses, reflecting SIS's commitment to uninterrupted vertical curriculum integration.
PYPx Launch:
Mentorship and Inspiration
The PYP Exhibition (PYPx) launch added another layer of preparation. Guided by Grade 6 "X-perts," G5 students received time management, collaboration, and problem-solving advice. Interactive stations emphasised Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills and connections to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
These experiences ease their move to Middle School and ignite their potential as confident, compassionate learners ready to thrive.
The Grade 5 students are busy preparing for their PYP Exhibitions ready for the SIS community to view on April 15th–16th.
