We had the privilege of catching up with Joshua Ip, Class of 2019 alum, during his recent visit to Shenzhen for a family celebration. Now a Hydraulic Modeler, Joshua was a Gecko for six years at our former Bayside campus. Following his interest in Physics, Joshua headed to Canada for university, attending the University of Victoria for a year before transferring to the University of British Columbia, ranked #1 for Civil Engineering in Canada. Graduating in 2024 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering, Joshua is now employed at an Engineering Consulting Company in Vancouver.

An avid outdoor adventurer, Joshua found that UBC’s Vancouver setting added value to his studies, broadened his experiences, and grew his interests and skills. Interestingly, during his university years, Joshua reconsidered his career prospects and expanded his course load to complete the pre-requisite requirements for entering Education in addition to completing his Engineering degree.

What exposure or experiences at SIS shaped your character and supported you towards where you are now?

I’ve grown so much since my time at SIS, and the teachers there played a huge role in shaping my journey. Their genuine support and dedication to my success as a student were unlike anything I had experienced before, whether in my earlier education or at university. The learning environment sparked my passion for teaching and also helped me develop the ability to break down complex concepts into clear, understandable ideas—skills I now value as I pursue my own path in education.

What specific skills or aptitudes did you develop as a result of studying in the IBDP at SIS and through the clubs and sports you joined?

Although preparing for the IB exams was challenging, learning how to study for them ultimately helped me succeed in university. I developed a sense of how to prioritise my coursework and became accustomed to the workload. These skills not only allowed me to manage my time more effectively during university but also provided me with a lot more free time to enjoy exploring student clubs.

What advice can you offer to current SIS students about planning for their future university experience?

  • Enjoy it as much as you can. Friends come and go, so be true to yourself.

  • Be open to pivoting your plans to accommodate new information and opportunities. I took an additional year to complete my degree to ensure I had what I needed to pursue becoming a teacher. Be open to adapting your program!

  • Prioritise networking as a way to expose yourself to new people.

  • Treat networking as making friends rather than focusing on finding job opportunities.

  • Today’s job market relies on contacts, so access and activate your network! The job I am in now became possible through my networking contacts.

  • University is about balancing the fun of the social life, and also the academics. Don't slack off, but don't waste your bachelor’s life only studying.

  • Join clubs, meet friends and find your interest! Try new things, explore your new home base, and get out of your comfort zone to stretch your experiences.

  • Make sure you know what benefits you get in university! There are great discounts for local recreation; for example, UBC is close to Whistler so that I could get heavily discounted ski passes. There is also excellent access to academic, career and mental health resources that can really make a difference in your day to day success if you take advantage of them.

We celebrate Joshua’s journey of success and wish him luck in his ambition to become a teacher!
