在科技飞速发展的时代,机器人竞赛成为了培养青少年创新思维与实践能力的前沿阵地。其中,FRC(FIRST Robotics Competition,又称FIRST机器人竞赛)以其高规格、强影响力,吸引着全球众多优秀青少年的目光。万科梅沙书院代表队的学生们怀揣着对科技的热爱,近期带着作品FRC7594踏上了国际区域赛的征程,在位于中国上海、美国明尼苏达的两场比赛中惊艳亮相,表现不俗。

 

自创校以来,VMA第二次派出代表队参赛FRC,这也是师生们首次前往美国参加区域赛。因为疫情而搁置的FRC7594重启计划,终于在2024-2025学年实现。巧合的是,VMA与友好学校MPA(Mounds Park Academy)在竞技场上相遇,双方代表队“火力全开”让比分争夺异常激烈。赛后,师生代表之间进行了一系列的交流活动,这也是两校缔结友好合作关系后,学生之间进行的首次学习交流。

 

梅沙2019届毕业生、FRC7594首届团队骨干成员尹杭的惊喜现身,让这趟美国之旅更加令人难忘。据了解,尹杭学长本硕毕业于美国西北大学,现以研究工程师(Research Engineer)的身份效力于斯坦福大学李飞飞教授(著名华裔科学家,被业内誉为“AI教母”)的工作团队。他带领VMA师生们参观了斯坦福校园和自己工作的实验室,新老成员们的灵感和故事互相激励着彼此。两届团队成员相聚在斯坦福的校园内,这个闪闪发光的时刻仿佛书写着创新精神的传承。

In the era of rapid technological development, robotics competitions have become a frontier for cultivating innovative thinking and practical abilities among teenagers. Among them, FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) attracts the attention of many outstanding teenagers around the world with its high standards and strong influence. Driven by their passion for technology, the students of the VMA team recently embarked on the journey of the international regional competition with their work FRC7594, making a stunning appearance in the two competitions held in Shanghai, China, and Minnesota, the United States, and delivering an excellent performance.

Since the establishment of the school, VMA has sent a representative team to participate in the FRC for the second time, and this is also the first time for teachers and students to participate in the regional competition in the United States. The restart plan of FRC7594, which was put on hold due to the pandemic, was finally realized in the 2024-2025 academic year. Coincidentally, VMA met its sister school MPA (Mounds Park Academy) on the competition field. Both representative teams "went all out," making the score competition extremely intense. After the competition, a series of exchange activities were carried out among the teacher and student representatives. This is also the first learning exchange among students since the two schools established a sister school cooperation relationship.

The surprise appearance of Yin Hang, a graduate of the 2019 class and a key member of the first team of FRC7594, made this trip to the United States even more memorable. It is reported that Senior Yin Hang graduated from Northwestern University in the United States with both a bachelor's and a master's degree, and now works as a Research Engineer in the working team of Professor Li Feifei (a famous Chinese-American scientist, known as the "Godmother of AI" in the industry) at Stanford University. He led the teachers and students of VMA to visit the campus of Stanford University and the laboratory where he works. The inspiration and stories of the new and old members inspired each other. The two generations of team members gathered on the campus of Stanford University, and this shining moment seemed to write the inheritance of the innovative spirit.

Today's competition field is the starting point from which the world will be changed tomorrow.

FRC作为全球各类青少年机器人竞赛中水平最高、最具观赏性、竞技性和影响力的顶级赛事,在过去36年中,吸引到了全球80个国家和地区的学生参与。本届主题“珊瑚拯救珊瑚拯救”(REEFSCAPE),要求参赛队伍创新运用工程技能设计出机器人珊瑚保育员,将人工培育的“珊瑚”移植回“珊瑚礁”上,并收集“海藻”,模拟修复海洋生态系统的关键环节,以保护海洋中生物种类最为丰富的栖息地。


“用科技践行环保理念,让赛场成为改造世界的起点。FRC“不止于机器人”的赛事理念在VMA的校园内激起回荡,点燃了学生们的参与热情。


在STEAM科组Andy和Jason两位老师的带领下,2024年8月,全新的FRC7594团队完成组建。这个自称为“古老又焕然一新的团队”将不同特长的成员划分成三个小组:软件组、硬件组和宣传招商组,以便每个参与者都能将所长投身于这份热爱之中。


成员们统一在课余时间接受编程、机械设计、电控系统等知识的培训,每个人都需要熟悉工具和设备的操作。在备赛过程中,FRC7594首届团队骨干成员尹杭(2019届毕业生,现就职于斯坦福大学实验室)和邱鹏(2020届毕业生,现就读于宾夕法尼亚大学)两位学长还专门录制了视频短片,为全新的团队鼓舞士气。

As the top competition with the highest level, the most spectacularness, competitiveness and influence among various global youth robotics competitions, FRC has attracted students from 80 countries and regions around the world to participate in the past 36 years. The theme of this year's competition is "REEFSCAPE", which requires participating teams to innovatively apply engineering skills to design robotic coral caregivers, transplant artificially cultivated "corals" back onto the "coral reefs", and collect "seaweed", simulating key links in the restoration of the marine ecosystem to protect the most biologically diverse habitats in the ocean.

"Putting environmental protection concepts into practice with technology and making the competition field the starting point for transforming the world." The competition concept of FRC, which is "more than just robotics", has echoed on the campus of VMA and ignited the students' enthusiasm for participation.

Under the leadership of Mr. Andy and Mr. Jason from the STEAM teaching team, in August 2024, the brand-new FRC7594 team was established. This team, which describes itself as "both ancient and brand new", divided its members with different specialties into three groups: the software group, the hardware group, and the publicity and investment promotion group, so that each participant can devote their expertise to this passion. The members uniformly received training in knowledge such as programming, mechanical design, and electrical control systems during their spare time, and everyone needs to be familiar with the operation of tools and equipment. During the preparation for the competition, Yin Hang (a 2019 graduate, currently working in a laboratory at Stanford University) and Qiu Peng (a 2020 graduate, currently studying at the University of Pennsylvania), the core members of the first FRC7594 team, specially recorded short videos to boost the morale of the brand-new team.

随着成员之间逐渐熟悉,团队合作也越发默契。1月赛季正式启动,考验团队实力的时刻才真正到来:团队需要针对年度主题任务,在为期6周时间里完成机器人的设计、构建、编程并最终测试运行。也正是在这段时间里,成员们经历着来自不同方面的压力和挑战,但每次成功克服障碍又让他们获得了“打怪升级”的乐趣。最终,全新的FRC7594在反复雕琢下破茧而出,并完成了在上海国际区域赛的首次亮相,开启了赛事征程。

As the members got to know each other better gradually, the teamwork became more and more tacit. The official launch of the season in January marked the real arrival of the moment to test the team's strength: the team needed to complete the design, construction, programming, and final testing and operation of the robot within a period of 6 weeks, aiming at the annual theme task. It was precisely during this period that the members experienced pressures and challenges from different aspects, but every successful overcoming of obstacles also brought them the pleasure of "leveling up" like defeating monsters. In the end, the brand-new FRC7594 emerged from its cocoon after repeated refinement and made its debut at the Shanghai International Regional Competition, kicking off its competition journey.

Exchanges Linking Across the Ocean: 

From Shanghai to Minnesota



VMA师生们利用此次机会,参观了两所美国著名学府,即明尼苏达大学双城分校和玛卡莱斯特学院。从深圳到上海,从上海到明尼苏达,一次次小小的进步,一次次全新的尝试,都刷新了师生们的体验。

积累了上海比赛的经验,VMA师生受邀前往美国明尼苏达州参加另一轮的国际区域赛。偌大的比赛空间令人震撼,不同肤色、不同语言交织,浓郁的国际化氛围扑面而来。与友好学校MPA的相遇成为赛场上的最大惊喜。团队技术负责人Thomas Xie同学回忆,FRC7594曾一度因为硬件故障导致机器无法发挥完整性能,而MPA代表队FRC3926作为队友加入,两队实现了优势互补,最终成功拿下赛果。两校学子在赛后进行的一系列交流活动,也丰富了此次美国之行。

Having accumulated the experience from the competition in Shanghai, teachers and students of VMA were invited to Minnesota, the United States, to participate in another round of the international regional competition. The huge competition venue was truly impressive. People of different skin colors and speaking various languages were intermingled there, and a strong international atmosphere enveloped the place. The encounter with the friendly school MPA was the biggest surprise during the competition. Thomas Xie, the technical leader of the team, recalled that FRC7594 once failed to enable the robot to perform to its full potential due to hardware malfunctions. However, the FRC3926 team from MPA joined as teammates, and the two teams complemented each other's advantages. Eventually, they successfully achieved a favorable result in the competition. A series of exchange activities carried out by the students from the two schools after the competition also enriched this trip to the United States.

在斯坦福大学视觉与学习实验室内,VMA师生们与FRC7594首届团队青年导师尹杭学长相见。尹杭耐心讲解目前的研究进展,并回忆起当年自己的团队在赛场上因为技术短板而遭遇挑战,如今实验室的成果正是对过往难题的突破性解答。实验室内大量展示着当今世界前沿的软硬件应用,这让现任队长Ken Li感受颇深:“我们见到了很多机器人方面的前沿的软硬件层面的应用。我印象最深的是当中一个触觉模拟的机器,就是一个操控把柄,你可以以此触摸不同材质的表面,把柄后连接的电机就会给你传来阻力感。”


现任成员们不时向尹杭表达出疑问和想法,思维的火花在两代团队的交流中不断迸发。此次参观之后,副队长Alan Ma表示,体会到了国际化视野和实际动手能力的重要性,尹杭学长是自己的优秀榜样,帮助自己坚定了朝机器人、人工智能等领域发展的决心。

In Stanford University, VMA teachers and students with Yin Hang, the senior and the youth mentor of the first team of FRC7594. Yin Hang patiently explained the current research progress and recalled that his team had encountered challenges on the competition field due to technical shortcomings in the past. Now, the achievements of the laboratory are exactly the breakthrough solutions to those previous problems. A large number of cutting-edge software and hardware applications in the world are displayed in the laboratory, which deeply impressed Ken Li, the current team captain. "We have seen many cutting-edge software and hardware applications in the field of robotics. What impressed me the most was a haptic simulation machine, which is a control handle. You can use it to touch the surfaces of different materials, and the motor connected behind the handle will transmit a sense of resistance to you." The current team members occasionally expressed their questions and ideas to Yin Hang, and sparks of thinking kept bursting out during the communication between the two generations of the team. After this visit, Alan Ma, the vice-captain, said that he had realized the importance of an international perspective and practical hands-on ability. Senior student Yin Hang was an excellent role model for him, which helped him firm up his determination to develop in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence and so on.

Ride the Wave of Science and Technology, and Cultivate Wave-Makers for the World


据STEAM科组长Jason老师介绍,这是自 2019年以来VMA学生二度参赛FRC,对于学生而言是一次重要的回归,对于学校的十年办学历程而言,也具有里程碑式的意义:学生们积累了顶级赛事经验,VMA STEAM科组未来也将继续保持和MPA的友好交流,此外,FRC7594前任团队成员在斯坦福大学、宾夕法尼亚大学等知名大学工作和学习,也为在校学生树立了榜样,激励着更多学生向更高的职业发展目标迈进。


在科技浪潮奔涌向前的当下,VMA作为一所站在国际化教育前沿的创新型学校,努力为学生搭建与时代接轨的学习平台。除FRC以外,VMA近年来组织学生参加了多项世界级科技类比赛,如VEX机器人世界锦标赛(VEX Robotics Competition)和加拿大计算机竞赛(Canadian Computing Competition, Waterloo)。目前开设的科技类社团包含创客与创新俱乐部(Makers &Innovators Club)、机器人俱乐部(Robotics Club)以及网络技术俱乐部(Web Tech Club)等。今年3月,清华大学航天航空学院副教授、博士生导师由小川教授受邀来访,发表了《人工智能技术发展与应用展望》的主题演讲;5月中下旬,第二届校园科技节(Science Fair)将在校内隆重开幕。而在校园外,师生们也能组队参与大湾区创客峰会(Maker Faire)这样的顶级盛会,或是前往科大讯飞、腾讯、比亚迪等知名科技企业进行交流访问。


未来,VMA还将开设AI相关课程,引路学生探索人工智能领域。相信在未来,会有更多青年学子在科技领域发光发热,在国际舞台上展现中国青少年的风采。

According to Mr. Jason, the head of the STEAM subject group, this is the second time that VMA students have participated in the FRC since 2019. For the students, it is an important return, and for the school's ten-year history of running the school, it also has milestone significance: the students have accumulated experience in top-level competitions. In the future, the VMA STEAM subject group will continue to maintain friendly exchanges with MPA. In addition, the former members of the FRC 7594 team, who are working and studying in renowned universities such as Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania, have also set an example for the current students, inspiring more students to move towards higher career development goals.


At a time when the wave of science and technology is surging forward, as an innovative school at the forefront of international education, VMA is striving to build a learning platform for students that keeps pace with the times. In addition to the FRC, in recent years, VMA has organized students to participate in a number of world-class science and technology competitions, such as the VEX Robotics Competition and the Canadian Computing Competition (Waterloo). Currently, the science and technology clubs offered include the Makers & Innovators Club, the Robotics Club, and the Web Tech Club, among others. In March of this year, Professor You Xiaochuan, an associate professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Aerospace Engineering, Tsinghua University, was invited to visit and delivered a keynote speech titled "The Development and Application Prospects of Artificial Intelligence Technology". In the middle and late May, the second Campus Science Fair will be grandly opened on campus.


Outside the campus, teachers and students can also form teams to participate in top-level events like the Maker Faire in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, or visit well-known technology companies such as iFLYTEK, Tencent, and BYD for exchanges. In the future, VMA will also offer AI-related courses to guide students to explore the field of artificial intelligence. It is believed that in the future, more young students will shine in the field of science and technology and showcase the demeanor of Chinese teenagers on the international stage.
