SIS Student Shines on International Science Stage

Matthew, a Grade 10 student at Shekou International School (SIS), is making waves in the international science community.

Matthew developed an at-home early detection kit for esophageal cancer using oral microbiota analysis, which identifies specific biomarkers to enable early diagnosis. His research was recognized by specialists for its potential global health impact and ability to significantly reduce medical costs. He has applied for both domestic and international patents for his prototype.

This year, Matthew had the honor of presenting his research at the 2024–2025 Sichuan Science and Engineering Fair, a prestigious event that brought together over 200 attendees, including 49 field experts and 50 students from international schools.

Matthew’s project focused on developing an early detection kit, and his presentation received insightful feedback from judges. One judge offered suggestions to make his product more market-competitive, while another extended a prestigious invitation to present at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Microbe International Conference—an exceptional opportunity typically reserved for undergraduates, professors, and industry professionals.

Reflecting on his journey, Matthew credits the SIS learning environment and the IB programme for nurturing his passion. "At SIS, students are encouraged to explore their interests. The integration across subjects helped me shape my project from both scientific and design perspectives, even considering market impact through entrepreneurship courses," he said.

Having joined SIS in Grade 5, Matthew recalls how the school’s student-centered approach helped him thrive. “The freedom to pursue what you love—whether it’s science, drama, or anything else—is what makes SIS special.”

An inquirer at heart, Matthew embodies the IB Learner Profile. “Being curious and constantly asking questions drives my learning,” he shared. His success is also rooted in strong self-management, as he balances academics with personal interests—a trait admired by his peers.
