Primary Gecko News is a student-led video programme that highlights the latest happenings in the SIS learning community. Guided by Mr. Jeff and Mr. Caid, our young reporters share timely updates in both English and French and strengthen their voice.
So, how does Gecko News come to life? Let’s take a look behind the scenes.
The Gecko News team works on a two-week schedule to create each episode. This lets students experience the entire news process, from planning a story to the final edit. They start by reviewing their last episode to see what worked and how they can improve. Students then take on different roles—like reporter, anchor, or video editor—and work together to share stories that matter to the student body.
On camera, they confidently present in front of the green screen. Off camera, they are busy reporting around school—interviewing teachers and classmates, and covering events like International Dot Day or changes to the school lunch menu.
What Topics
Do They Explore?
Through segments such as “Voice of Change,” students explore meaningful global topics like food waste, migration, sustainability (SDGs), and DEIJB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging). In “Greet the Gecko,” they spotlight members of our community—students, teachers, or leaders—sharing their unique stories.
Gecko News is a learning journey that builds teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking, while letting students express creativity through filming and editing.
How Does It Connect
to the PYP?
These experiences align closely with the Primary Years Programme （PYP ） Approaches to Learning (ATLs) and Learner Profile attributes, helping our young Geckos grow as communicators, risk-takers, and reflective thinkers.
Since its launch last year, Primary Gecko News has become a beloved programme across SIS—strengthening connections within our vibrant learning community.
