Our Reading Carnival at Shenzhen American International School was a heartwarming celebration of creativity, community, and compassion. Held on November 21st, this event was more than just a gathering of students, parents, and teachers—it was a testament to the power of imagination and the impact that education can have on the world.
A Journey of Creativity and Innovation
The carnival featured an exciting blend of traditional storytelling and modern technology, where students showcased their original stories and illustrations. They not only wrote and drew their books, but also used AI tools to bring their creations to life, transforming their words and images into interactive, immersive experiences. This innovative approach to storytelling was the perfect example of how technology can inspire creativity and deepen learning.
The carnival wasn't just about reading; it was about creating and sharing. Our students had the unique opportunity to sell their books to parents and the public, with all proceeds going to support a cause close to our hearts—cancer research for children. Through their participation, students learned valuable lessons in philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and the profound impact their actions can have on the world.
This event also marked the official launch of Bull Books, our school’s publishing imprint. As students sold their books, they became the first published authors under this exciting new initiative, setting the stage for future student-driven publications. The Reading Carnival helped us take a significant step forward in nurturing our students’ creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
Fun and Games: Carnival Excitement
The Reading Carnival featured a variety of fun games, each with a reading twist to keep participants engaged and active:
· Tic-Tac-Toe: Players answered book-related questions before marking their spot.
· Ladder Toss: Participants named an author or book genre before taking their shot.
· Ping Pong Bounce: Bounce ping pong balls into cups, then answer a book trivia question.
· Balloon Darts: Pop a balloon to reveal a reading challenge or prompt.
· Hit the Target: After hitting the target, players shared a memorable book quote.
· Ball Throw: Throw balls into baskets, then name a book starting with the same letter.
These games combined fun, physical activity, and reading challenges, encouraging students to think creatively about the books they love.
Take One, Leave One: Sharing the Love of Reading
In the spirit of sharing, we hosted a Book Swap, where families and students exchanged books, offering the chance to discover new stories and authors. It was heartening to see the exchange of beloved titles, further fostering a sense of community and a love for reading.
Additionally, the Book Donation initiative will allow our school community to contribute books to schools and individuals in need. Every book donated helped open doors to new opportunities for children with fewer resources, making a meaningful impact beyond our campus.
A Cause That Matters: Supporting Children’s Cancer Research
One of the most touching aspects of the Reading Carnival was the cause it supported. All proceeds from the sale of student books will go directly to cancer research for children, helping fund vital research and support for young cancer patients worldwide. In this way, our carnival not only promoted creativity and education but also made a tangible difference in the lives of children facing life’s toughest challenges.
Through their participation in this event, our students learned that knowledge is not just about facts and figures—it’s about using what we know to make a positive impact on the world.
The Reading Carnival was more than just an event; it was a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when a community comes together with purpose and passion. It embodied our school’s commitment to fostering creativity, compassion, and global citizenship.
The event also provided a platform to launch Bull Books, our new student publishing imprint, which will continue to empower our students to share their voices and ideas with the world. As we reflect on the success of the Reading Carnival, we are filled with pride at what our community has achieved together—and excited for what the future holds.
Thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and made this event such a success. Together, we have shown that through creativity, compassion, and community, we can make a difference—one book at a time.
