What is wisdom?

Who is the wisest person?

While many might name Einstein or Marie Curie—those bright stars in the sky of history—Miss Genesse chose to speak about someone far more ordinary: her father.

At this month’s school assembly, in response to the theme of “Wisdom,” Ms. Genesse shared her story with the whole community. She spoke of the man who, time after time, pushed through hardship and found his way through life’s challenges. It was he who shaped her broad way of seeing the world and quietly influenced the person she became. Wisdom, she said, is not merely knowledge or skill, but the choice to grow even when life feels limited.

VMA’s open and culturally diverse environment was what drew her here, and she hopes to bring her own unique experiences into the classroom as well. As a Research teacher, she has found abundant opportunities for innovative teaching through interdisciplinary collaboration and inquiry-based projects. She often says, “When teachers feel supported, students benefit from a more fun, creative and responsive instructions both inside and outside the classroom. ”

In her classes, she weaves course content together with current events and global issues, guiding students to use research methods to question, analyze, and solve real-world problems. She believes that true wisdom lies not only in knowing how to act, but in understanding why it matters.

Imagine going to school barefoot — no slippers, no socks, no shoes. How would you feel? Sad? Demotivated? Ashamed? Maybe you’d stop going.

We are lucky. You are lucky. I am lucky — I never had to walk to class barefoot. But my father did.

He wasn’t born with a silver spoon. Life was harder then. Every day he walked 1.2 kilometers to school with nothing on his feet, carrying only his dedication and determination to finish his studies despite the hardship. In high school, he earned a scholarship to join a private high school and received support to be able to have uniform, notebooks, and a pair of shoes. Later on, he studied in a vocational school and completed a two‑year course as a mechanic. He worked in Manila for a time, and later returned to our hometown to farm.

In my memory, every 4 in the morning he would wake up early to harvest vegetables, sell them in the neighborhood, and use the money to send us to school and buy our basic needs. He always told us “Bisan ano pa kabudlay, maninguha gid ko nga indi nyo ma‑experiensyahan ang kabudlay nga akon na‑experiensyahan.” In English, “No matter how hard life is, I will do whatever it takes so my children would never suffer what I suffered as a child.”

Because of his wise choices — from when he was young through fatherhood until his last day with us, sadly, he passed away back in 2018,— I believe he was truly wise. If he hadn’t made those choices, maybe I wouldn’t be here today sharing this story. Maybe Miss Genesse wouldn’t be in VMA today, patiently sharing her research skills to her students.

So, what does this mean? Being wise matters not just for ourselves, but also, for the people around us — today, tomorrow, and in the future. Life will throw many difficulties on you. Don’t give up. Let those challenges fuel your desire to be wise and have a future that you wanted to have.

Lastly, Wisdom comes from different meanings….And remember, wisdom is learned in small acts —by listening, learning, choosing, and caring too.

So, be wise for yourself… and for others.

他常对我们说:“Bisan ano pa kabudlay, maninguha gid ko nga indi nyo ma-experiensyahan ang kabudlay nga akon na-experiensyahan.”
