Why Families Choose ISNS

Why the Journey Often Begins with a Visit

Choosing a school is never just about a curriculum or a campus. It is about trust, values, and the feeling that this is where my child belongs. At the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen (ISNS), we meet families at many different moments in their journey — relocating to Shenzhen, transitioning from another school, or searching for an environment where their child can truly thrive. And almost every conversation begins the same way:

“Can you tell us

 what makes ISNS different?”

Why ISNS

A School with Deep

Roots and a Clear Vision

Founded in 2002, ISNS is Shenzhen’s first full-continuum IB World School, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). What makes ISNS distinctive is not only what we teach — but how and why we teach.

At ISNS, the internationally recognized IB framework is delivered through a Canadian curriculum, combining global perspectives with academic depth, structure, and care. Students graduate with both an IB Diploma and a Canadian High School Diploma, opening doors to universities around the world.

Over the years, ISNS graduates have gone on to study at leading institutions in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia — confident, capable, and well prepared for life beyond school.

Why ISNS

Caring Locally,

Thriving Globally

Step onto the ISNS campus, located at the foot of Tanglang Mountain in Nanshan, and you will feel it immediately — this is a school designed for children.

Purpose-built facilities support learning at every stage:

A dedicated Early Years building designed for children aged 2–5

Science laboratories, design workshops, and maker spaces

Music, art, drama, and visual arts studios — including a photography darkroom

Indoor and outdoor sports facilities

Libraries, a VR lab, and a 300-seat auditorium

Facilities alone do not define a school.

What families often notice most is the atmosphere:

01

Teachers who truly know their students

02

A calm, respectful learning environment

03

A strong sense of belonging that

extends well beyond the classroom

Throughout the year, the ISNS campus is brought to life through a wide range of whole-school and community events that celebrate learning, culture, creativity, and connection. From Family Fun Day and Spirit Day, to Halloween celebrations, Winter Concerts, Sports Days, and themed learning weeks such as Chinese Culture Week, Technology Week, Arts Week, Canada Week, French Week, and Diversity & Inclusion Week, these shared experiences help students and families feel connected to the school community and to one another.

With students and staff representing over 20 countries and regions, ISNS is a genuinely international community — one where diversity is lived every day, not simply stated.

Students grow up learning to appreciate different perspectives, celebrate cultures, and develop a global mindset grounded in care, respect, and belonging.

Why ISNS

A Balance of Warmth

and Academic Rigor

ISNS believes that students thrive when they are both challenged and cared for.

Class sizes are intentionally small, with astudent–teacher ratio of approximately 1:7, allowing teachers to differentiate learning and support each child as an individual. Lessons are inquiry-driven, encouraging curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking — skills that matter far beyond exams.

Language learning is also a key pillar of ISNS education:

A strong English environment

Four Chinese lessons per week

French offered as an additional language, reflecting Canada’s bilingual heritage

Today, over 70%of ISNS students speak at least two languages, with many fluent in three.

Why ISNS

Rolling Enrolment —

Because Life Doesn’t

Always Follow a

School Calendar

Families’ lives change — and schools must be flexible.

ISNS offers rolling enrolment throughout the academic year, subject to availability. While joining at the beginning of the school year may offer a smoother transition, students who enter mid-year are carefully supported by both academic teams and counselors to ensure they settle confidently.

Admissions assessments are age-appropriate:

  • Early Years to Grade 2: interview and Trial-class observation

  • Grades 2–5: interview,Assessment, Mathematics, Reading and Writing

  • Middle & High School: interview,Assessment, Mathematics, Reading, Language application and Writing

Each assessment is designed not to “test” children, but to understand how best to support them.

Why ISNS

Life Beyond

the Classroom

Alongside a rich academic programme, ISNS places strong emphasis on Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) and our annual Week Without Walls (WWW)—both integral parts of the student learning experience.

Each Year, Week Without Walls is not simply a school trip.

It is a carefully designed, well-supported learning journey aligned with the IB Learner Profile and the development of the whole child.

In a safe and supportive environment, students step into new cultural contexts, visit unfamiliar places, and try new activities that challenge them socially, emotionally, physically, and mentally. From surfing, rock climbing, sailing, cooking, and outdoor exploration, to service learning, cultural immersion, and leadership experiences, students learn to stretch beyond their comfort zones, reflect on their experiences, and build genuine confidence.

For some students who may not always feel academically confident, WWW and EOTC provide powerful opportunities to shine—through hands-on learning, real-world problem solving, and teamwork. Students discover strengths they may not yet recognize in themselves, while learning to trust their abilities and support one another.

Learning at ISNS continues throughout daily school life as well. Students can choose from 120+ after-school activities, including:

Sports teams and physical wellbeing programs

Music ensembles, choir, and band

Coding, robotics, and design

Debate, leadership, and service learning

Visual arts, drama, and creative clubs

Our goal is that when students move on to university and beyond, they do so not only with strong academic foundations, but also with the confidence, resilience, and willingness to embrace new challenges—skills that are cultivated both inside and outside the classroom.
