Whole School Observation and Student Inquiry at ISNS | ISNS
What students do, say, and think in the classroom tells us the most about their learning. By observing these moments closely and reflecting together, schools can better understand how teaching practices support student growth.
Since 2021, ISNS has carried out Whole School Observation throughout the academic year. This ongoing practice helps the school gather meaningful insights from real classrooms and use them to continuously enhance teaching and learning.
What Is Whole School Observation?
Whole School Observation is a shared learning experience involving teachers, school leaders, and staff members. During each observation round, participants visit classrooms with a common focus and record simple, descriptive notes about student learning.
This process is not about evaluating teachers. Instead, it allows the school community to reflect together and ask an important question:
Are our values and educational goals truly visible in everyday classroom learning?
This Round’s Focus: Student Inquiry
In this observation cycle, the focus is on Student Inquiry—how well students understand their learning and the choices they make during lessons.
Observers speak briefly with students and ask two key questions:
What are you doing now, and why is it important?
This helps show whether students understand the purpose of their learning.
What choices did you make during this activity, and why?
This reveals how students think, reason, and solve problems.
Student responses offer valuable insight into engagement, ownership, and deeper learning.
Why Parent Participation Matters
For this round, members of the Parent Association were invited to join the observation experience. This gave parents a unique opportunity to see how classrooms function and how the school reflects on learning behind the scenes.
After the observations, participating parents shared their reflections with the Head of School. Observation findings are also shared with the wider school community, reinforcing transparency and trust.
Learning Together, Growing Together
Whole School Observation supports ISNS’s commitment to continuous improvement.
By observing learning, listening to student voices, and reflecting as a community, the school continues to strengthen teaching practices and create meaningful learning experiences for every child.
Caring Locally. Thriving Globally.
