International School Counsellors Week at ISNS
This week, ISNS proudly joins schools around the world in recognising International School Counsellors Week—a moment to acknowledge the essential, often unseen work our counsellors do every day to support students’ well-being, growth, and future pathways.
At ISNS, we don’t just teach—we nurture the whole child. In a world where academic pressure meets emotional growing pains, our Counseling Team is the quiet, steady anchor ensuring every student feels seen, heard, and empowered.
This International School Counsellors Week, we invite our community to step behind the scenes and discover how our counselors support students every day—often in ways that are deeply impactful, yet rarely visible.
What Does Emotional Safety Feel Like at School?
At ISNS, emotional safety is not an abstract idea. It is a living, breathing support system that students experience throughout the day—from the first greeting in the morning to the last reassuring conversation before heading home.
Here’s what that protection system can feel like from a student’s perspective:
The day begins with a personal connection. Ms. Anne greets every Early Years child by name, offering a warm smile or a high-five at the playground gate. This simple, consistent ritual builds trust and belonging, quietly telling our youngest learners, “You are welcome here.”
In an Upper PYP classroom, Ms. Nana brings Social-Emotional Learning to life through role-play. Students don’t just hear about conflict resolution—they practice it through stories and scenarios, gaining the language and confidence to navigate friendships.
A safe space opens for middle school students. In Ms. Sophie’s small-group sessions, students share feelings of stress or overwhelm. They learn they are not alone—and begin building practical coping skills together.
A high school student feels buried under deadlines, overwhelmed and anxious. Ms. Godkin listens, validates those feelings, and then works collaboratively with the student to break the challenge into manageable steps. Panic becomes a plan—and a life skill is strengthened.
We ensure every interaction is meaningful and every intervention is personalised. We have the time to truly see your child.
Behind the Care: The Professional Frameworks That Make It Work
This daily care is powered by intentional, research-informed systems designed to support every learner at their level.
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
MTSS acts as our strategic map for student well-being, ensuring support is proactive, targeted, and always accessible.
Tier 1 – For All Students
Universal prevention and growth. All students participate in proactive SEL lessons embedded in the curriculum, alongside whole-school initiatives such as Diversity Week and Anti-Bullying campaigns. A positive, inclusive school culture is built from the ground up.
Tier 2 – Targeted Support
Some students need additional reinforcement. Counselors offer small-group “skill-builder” sessions focused on areas such as stress management or social skills, along with gentle check-ins to address concerns early.
Tier 3 – Individualised Care
For students facing more significant challenges, we provide confidential one-on-one counselling, crisis intervention protocols, and close partnerships with families and external professionals. Clear referral systems ensure no student slips through the cracks.
More Than Prevention: A Culture of Respect and Advocacy
Beyond responding to issues, our counselors work proactively to cultivate a culture of kindness, courage, and responsibility.
Students learn to recognise, report, and reject bullying, understand the difference between conflict and harm,
and become confident upstanders.
Multiple safe reporting channels are taught and reinforced so students know where—and how—to seek support.
When harm occurs, the focus is on accountability,
healing, and learning, restoring trust and safety within
the community.
Building “Life Armor” Through Social-Emotional Learning
Guided by ISCA and CASEL frameworks, our counselling curriculum teaches essential human skills that last far beyond school.
Supporting new students to settle, connect, and belong
Fostering understanding
and inclusion
Empowering students to solve challenges independently
Building resilience and healthier exam seasons
Encouraging confidence, courage, and risk-taking
Teaching personal safety, boundaries, and self-advocacy
Promoting respectful, upstanding behaviour
These aren’t just lessons—they’re skills for life. Every SEL session, quiet reassurance, and coordinated intervention reinforces the ISNS promise:
“You’re seen. You matter.”
The Partnership Difference: It Takes a Village
Counseling at ISNS extends far beyond the counseling office.
Equipping educators with practical strategies for daily emotional and social support
Partnering through workshops such as Raising Resilient Teens and Healthy Friendships
Continuous upskilling through international conferences and best-practice sharing
Working alongside school leaders, student support teams, and external professionals to ensure every safeguarding concern is handled with care and precision
When we say “it takes a village,” we mean it—and we’ve built that village around every ISNS child.
University & Career Counselling: Looking Ahead
As students progress into the upper grades, counselling support expands to include University & Career Counselling (UCC). Working closely with the social-emotional counselling team, UCC counsellors guide students from Grade 6 to Grade 12 in exploring interests, selecting courses, and planning post-secondary pathways.
From subject choices and career exploration to university applications, testing, essays, interviews, and financial planning, the UCC team ensures students and families are informed, aligned, and supported through this important transition.
Importantly, the UCC team works hand-in-hand with the Social-Emotional Counsellors to support students through the emotional pressures of decision-making, academic stress, and major life transitions, ensuring students feel confident, informed, and supported at every stage.
Our Promise: Growing Future-Ready Humans
At ISNS, counselling is not divided into silos—it is a connected system of care that supports students emotionally, socially, academically, and directionally.
Every SEL lesson builds resilience.
Every university meeting builds clarity.
Every conversation builds confidence.
We are here—every day—
as part of your child’s village.
