PART. 06

VPA Insights

Education is a slow art — its answers unfold with each passing month

PART. 01

Teaching & Innovation

March at VPA opened warmly with the immersion of traditional culture and the spark of critical thinking. From the joyful rituals of the Lantern Festival to the inquiry-based practices of Math Festival and STEAM Day, we continue to use authentic contexts as our classroom, accompanying children as they construct knowledge, sharpen their thinking, and witness growth quietly unfolding in the spring.

Deputy Principal’s Observation Notes

In March, the VPA campus hosted a unique Math Festival. The event aimed to help students understand that mathematics is not just about numbers and formulas but is deeply connected to creativity, expression, and problem-solving skills.

In the PYP, the activity linked to the IB transdisciplinary theme “How We Express Ourselves.” Students explored multiple ways to share ideas. They moved through creative stations such as puzzles, logic challenges, tangrams, and Morse code design, combining independent and collaborative work to share strategies and exchange thoughts. The event followed a “learning community” model, encouraging children to learn from each other, view mistakes as part of growth, and prioritize thinking and exploration over finding a single correct answer.

In the MYP, more in-depth interdisciplinary practices took place. Grade‑level Math UNO board games, a school‑wide collaborative QR‑code wall project, and the marshmallow‑spaghetti tower engineering challenge turned abstract mathematics into tangible experiences. These activities not only enhanced students’ problem‑solving, spatial construction, and teamwork skills but also fostered a sense of school pride.

Students reflected that the Math Festival was fun, engaging, and meaningful. They enjoyed collaborating with peers, grew more confident in their mathematical abilities, and showed perseverance even when facing challenges. MYP students particularly noted that the QR‑code wall project left them with a precious collective memory of their school days. Through this event, mathematics gradually shed its abstract shell in the children’s minds, becoming a lively subject closely connected to life, full of creativity and expression.

PART. 02

Campus Life

The beauty of education lies in connection and co‑creation. This month, we deepened cross‑regional exchanges and focused inward on teaching expertise, allowing growth to flourish naturally on a broader platform.

Joyful Lantern Festival Opening the New Semester

On March 3rd, the first day of the new semester coincided with the Lantern Festival. The VPA campus resounded with the beat of drums and gongs, welcoming teachers and students back with traditional dragon and lion dances. Red silk fluttered and golden scales leaped; festive lanterns and riddles adorned the campus – from classic riddles, fun emoji guessing games, to vivid oracle‑bone interpretations. Riddles of varying difficulty attracted students of all levels to pause and think. This blend of tradition and modernity not only created a warm atmosphere for the start of the semester but also allowed students to experience the charm of Chinese culture firsthand, vividly reflecting VPA’s commitment to cultural heritage and an international IB mindset.

STEAM Day

On March 20th, the annual VPA STEAM Day took place as scheduled. From making paper circuits and coding to designing wind‑powered racing cars and exploring science experiments, students in Grades 1‑11 immersed themselves in interdisciplinary project‑based practices. The activities were carefully designed to match the inquiry levels of PYP and MYP, encouraging hands‑on collaboration and fearless trial‑and‑error. This fully demonstrated VPA’s strength in interdisciplinary integration under the IB framework, stimulating each student’s innovative potential and passion for science through a tailored practice platform, putting the goal of “integrating knowledge with action” into practice.

Morning Rituals: Growth Begins at the School Gate Every Day

At VPA, every weekday morning holds a unique growth ritual.

Monday · Flag‑Raising Speech. On Monday, the solemn flag‑raising ceremony and speech cultivate a sense of national pride and belonging.

Tuesday · Drama Morning. On Tuesday, the grand staircase turns into an “improvisation theater,” where students express themselves creatively through facial expressions and body language, building confidence through trying.

Wednesday · Reading Morning. On Wednesday, the “walking library” immerses the campus in a tranquil reading atmosphere, building sustained reading stamina.

Thursday · Music Morning. On Thursday, piano and singing take turns on stage; “little musicians” send morning greetings and artistic passion through music.

Friday · Awards Morning. On Friday, the entrance becomes a “walk of fame” where the principal presents awards to students who have made progress in various fields, ensuring every effort is seen.

These daily rituals go beyond mere formality – they are a vivid expression of VPA’s philosophy of “nurturing with warmth,” shaping a positive school culture, and supporting students’ holistic development.

This seventh‑grade “World Pump Track Champion” at VPA added another glory in March! At the 2026 China Pump Track Cycling League, he dominated the competition and claimed the national championship. Previously, he was the 2025 Youth Pump Track World Champion and received the title of “Excellent Athlete” and first place in the Men’s Team B event at the 2025 Guangdong Youth BMX (Racing) Championship. His rapid growth is a perfect combination of talent, passion, and extreme persistence – and a powerful testament to how VPA’s “Special Talent Scholarship” and personalized support system empower students to pursue their dreams and shine on their own track.

PART. 04

Faculty Focus

Education is the art of conversing with life, the gentle force of one cloud pushing another. At VPA, teachers not only impart knowledge but also, through their professionalism, passion, and dedication, become warm beacons and companions on the children’s growth journey.

Terry Tao: Over a Decade of Teaching, Twice Recognised as an Outstanding Teacher

Terry Tao has over ten years of teaching experience, excelling in inquiry‑based, project‑based, and gamified teaching. His educational career began with the “Teach for China” public welfare project, where two years of teaching in Yunnan laid a solid practical foundation. Before joining VPA, he was a founding faculty member of an international school in Shenzhen, teaching mathematics to grades 5‑8, and was twice awarded the title of “Outstanding Teacher” by the Nanshan District in 2021‑2022.

He firmly believes that every student possesses unique talents and light, and the core responsibility of a teacher is to guide them to discover themselves. In his view, “teaching” is the basic mission, while “nurturing” is the essence. He hopes to accompany students as both a teacher and a friend, growing together. This deep understanding and steadfast practice of education vividly embody VPA’s “nurturing with warmth” philosophy and the IB goal of holistic education.

Ivy Xia Zihui: Illuminating Mathematical Thinking with a Spirit of Exploration

Ms. Xia teaches Grade 4 mathematics and UOI this semester. She has many years of teaching experience in Guangzhou and Hong Kong and is familiar with bilingual IB and Hong Kong curriculum systems. She believes that mathematics learning should be full of joy and exploration. Therefore, she excels at using lively classroom activities and real‑life contexts to stimulate students’ interest, guiding them to master knowledge and develop thinking in a relaxed atmosphere.

She focuses on fostering problem‑solving skills, critical thinking, and teamwork through inquiry‑based learning and group collaboration. In her classroom, she strives to create an open, inclusive, and safe learning environment, encouraging every child to express themselves confidently and try boldly. Her teaching practice vividly illustrates VPA’s educational philosophy under the IB framework – igniting students’ inner passion for learning through personalisation and warm companionship.

PART. 05

Community Voices

Every conversation between home and school is a precious echo on the educational journey. We value and listen to every parent’s voice, making trust and support the strongest pillars for children’s growth.

This month, home and school joined hands to support student growth through diverse activities. At the VSA Charity Concert, students and parents participated together. Children confidently displayed their artistic accomplishments on stage, while parental accompaniment became the strongest support. This cross‑Shenzhen‑Hong Kong event was a warm practice of arts education and home‑school co‑education.

The new semester PTA class representative meeting was successfully held. Representatives actively exchanged ideas on class building and event planning, clarifying work directions and enhancing team cohesion, laying a solid foundation for efficient class affairs.

In addition, the PTA will continue to promote reading through book recommendations, reading sharing sessions, and other means to foster a campus reading atmosphere. Plans to explore “parent reading salons” and similar activities will bring reading culture deeper into families.

Spring opens a new journey, and home and school share the same heart. Every step taken together infuses students’ growth with warmth and strength.

PART. 06

Moments in Motion

Time passes, but moments remain. The scenes of devotion in drama, creation in art, and striving in sports together form the most vivid and warm backdrop of VPA campus life.

Music: Crossing Shenzhen and Hong Kong, Spreading Love Through Music

In March, 15 VPA students participated in the VSA Charity Concert. With exquisite performances and warm singing, they not only demonstrated deep artistic accomplishment but also conveyed care and empathy through cross‑regional artistic exchange.

During the event, VPA students also enjoyed wonderful performances by the Hong Kong SAR Philharmonic Orchestra, VSA soloists, and various student groups. This valuable international music exchange experience deepened the IB values VPA champions, especially transdisciplinary ideas about “who we are” and “where we fit in the wider world.”

At the same time, music teaching continues to innovate: the “VPA’s Got Talent” competition for all students will launch in April; the musical Moana, prepared by the Drama ASA club, is actively being rehearsed, with students taking the stage in June. From cross‑regional exchanges to on‑campus performances, music continuously provides children with diverse channels to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with the community.

Drama

Students in Grades 3‑5 recently explored core drama techniques such as gesture, tableau, and improvisation. They learned to convey character traits through precise body language, construct static images to express spatial and emotional layers, and finally bring those images to life with dialogue and movement. Through collaborative creation and rehearsal, students not only mastered new skills but also significantly enhanced teamwork, creative negotiation, and mutual support. Several young actors stood out with confident, committed performances, fully demonstrating the rich outcomes of VPA drama education in nurturing students’ expressiveness, confidence, and perseverance.

Visual Arts: Exploring Composition Through Line and Colour

In their composition unit, Grade 2 students explored how simple lines and bold colours can create strong visual balance. Inspired by the work of Etel Adnan, they created abstract landscapes using only three lines to divide their space. This constraint encouraged students to think carefully about placement, proportion, and colour choices. Rather than focusing on detail, they explored how composition alone can shape meaning and mood. Through this process, students developed confidence in organising their ideas visually and discovered the power of simplicity in art.

Warmth Along the Journey, Co‑creating Growth

The chapter of March has drawn to a close, and the prelude of April is already being composed.

Thank you to every teacher, student, and parent for your devoted involvement this month. May we continue to carry the vitality and warmth of spring, walk hand in hand, and together write the next wonderful chapter at VPA.
