For the past twenty-five years, he has dedicated himself to Bromsgrove School UK, growing into an educational leader deeply loved by students and parents.
This year, he will bring the educational traditions and experience of Bromsgrove School UK across 8,000 kilometres to Shenzhen, officially taking up the role of Head of Prep UK at BMH in the new academic year.
His name is James Brinkley. Introducing our new Head of Prep UK for the first time, we can’t wait to tell you more about his exciting story!
[ Building a stage
on trust and sharing] .
During his twenty-five years at Bromsgrove, Mr. Brinkley not only dedicated himself to classroom teaching but also grew into an outstanding educational leader. As a key member of the leadership team, he spearheaded the strategic planning of the PE and Games department – curriculum design, budget planning, and organising inter-school competitions, including large-scale events each year across many schools – demonstrating exceptional cross-departmental coordination and strategic execution.
He extended his leadership from the campus into the community and across borders. He established a long-term framework for supporting schools in South Africa from Bromsgrove UK – not a one-off charity donation, but a strategic partnership lasting over a decade. Over more than ten years, he mobilised staff and students to raise over £140,000 ( approximately 1.3 million RMB) , building a classroom block, science laboratory, library and ICT suite for the partner schools in South Africa.

Recently, he led the 'Young Enterprise' scheme for pupils in Years 5–8, who spent eight weeks to design products, manage budgets and organise sales, honing their leadership and teamwork in a real-world business simulation. The funds raised through these projects ultimately supported the development of the South African schools. In the recent Easter holiday, he led a group of students to South Africa to see firsthand how their efforts were helping people on the other side of the world.
He has built one platform after another for his pupils: bi-annual international trips, which he leads personally – skiing in Switzerland in winter, and hiking, climbing and surfing in small coastal towns in summer – guiding students through different sports and cultures. For him, being an educator is not a 'nine-to-five' job. Wherever and whenever, he puts students at the centre and gives them the experience of a lifetime.

A true educator never just talks about education ideas behind closed doors. He helps children see with their own eyes how their actions shape themselves and influence the world.
[ Educational excellence
built on strong support systems] .
According to Mr. Brinkley, Bromsgrove School's consistently strong academic outcomes are built on 'excellent teaching, clear expectations and strong support systems', and 'consistency, high standards and strong communication with parents' are also essential.
For twenty-five years, he has never left the front line of teaching. He teaches maths and PE in the Prep School while leading the development of the whole subject department – from curriculum design and teaching strategies to staff training and assessment systems – driving a series of reforms that have transformed teaching quality.

He knows that teaching is a profession requiring immense dedication, knowledge and passion. As a result, he invests tremendous energy in developing his teaching teams, creating clear career pathways and ongoing support systems for every teacher. At Bromsgrove UK, he personally mentors early-career teachers, helping them find their feet in the classroom – from behaviour management to lesson planning.
Whether at Bromsgrove UK or with our Prep UK team he is about to lead, he is committed to working with his team towards higher academic goals through coaching, support, development and recognising success, all built on mutual trust, shared purpose and genuine enjoyment of working together.
If academics are the backbones of a school, then the pastoral care system is the warmth that flows through it. Mr. Brinkley not only models this in the classroom but also works at a structural level, building the school's pastoral care framework.
He personally designed, led and implemented an extensive Bromsgrove Awards and Badges system that recognises resilience, kindness, and mutual support school-wide. It has been extremely successful in motivating pupils and celebrating positive behaviour, instilling a spirit of resilience, kindness and mutual support in the community. At the same time, he established a whole-school character education framework adopted across all year groups, driving whole-school culture and structural pastoral systems.

“Staff knows every child as an individual, creating a supportive environment where children feel safe, confident and valued.” In his view, the core of pastoral care is not about how sophisticated the system is, but knowing every child as an individual.
He hopes to bring the culture that “every child feels seen” to BMH by working with the Banzhuren’s to ensure that every child feels encouraged and supported. As stated in his personal commitment,
My personal commitment is to serve the BMH community with honesty, dedication and care. I believe that there are exciting times and opportunities ahead for BMH and in partnership with Bromsgrove UK. We will work to ensure that every child receives an outstanding education and leaves school confident, capable and ready for the future.
Going through Mr. Brinkley's professional history, you will find an all-round capable leader with proven track record. Leadership, academics, pastoral care – these three pillars define his career and will also be the most valuable gifts he brings to BMH.
In our next post, we will help you get to know Mr. Brinkley and his remarkable journey from another angle – until next time!
