Building on Our Foundation
When I first joined Shenzhen American International School, I saw tremendous potential.
I saw dedicated teachers, supportive families, and students eager to learn. I also saw a school entering a new chapter—one with opportunities to strengthen systems, build consistency, and create a stronger foundation for future growth.
Over the past several years, I have had the privilege of watching our community grow stronger together.
This year, we continued strengthening our implementation of the IB Primary Years Programme, enhanced academic systems across the school, expanded opportunities for inquiry-based learning, and celebrated our 21st anniversary as a school community.
These accomplishments matter, but more importantly, they reflect the direction we are moving.
Every year becomes another chapter in a much larger story.
Preparing Students for a Changing World
Education is changing.
The world our students will enter after graduation will look very different from the world many of us entered ourselves.
Artificial intelligence is transforming industries. New careers are emerging while others are disappearing. Information has never been more accessible, yet critical thinking has never been more important.
Because of this, the question is no longer simply:
"What do students know?"
The more important question is:
"What can students do with what they know?"
Can they think critically?
Can they communicate effectively?
Can they collaborate with others?
Can they adapt when circumstances change?
Can they lead with both competence and character?
These are the qualities that will define success in the future, and they are becoming increasingly central to the educational experience we provide at SAIS.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
This year also saw the launch of ParkLab, a programme designed to extend learning beyond the traditional classroom and encourage curiosity, exploration, and real-world problem solving.
It has been encouraging to see students engage with learning in new ways and develop a deeper connection between their studies and the world around them.
Like all strong programmes, ParkLab will continue to evolve as we learn, refine, and strengthen our approach. Its development reflects a belief that great schools are never finished—they continuously improve.
The Growth That Matters Most
Some of the most meaningful growth I have witnessed this year will never appear on a report card.I have watched students who once hesitated to speak in front of others confidently present their ideas to large audiences.I have seen students learn how to collaborate through disagreement rather than avoid it.
I have watched children become more curious, more independent, and more willing to ask thoughtful questions.I have seen resilience develop after setbacks and determination emerge through challenges.I have seen acts of kindness when nobody was watching. These moments may not generate headlines, but they are often the moments that matter most.
They are the moments that shape character.
The People Behind the School
While much attention is naturally given to programmes and student achievements, none of it would be possible without the dedicated educators who make learning happen every day.
One accomplishment I am particularly proud of this year is the strength and stability of our team.
In a profession where turnover can often be high, SAIS continues to benefit from strong teacher retention and a faculty committed to growth, collaboration, and student success.
As principal, I have the privilege of working alongside our teachers each day. I see the preparation behind every lesson, the care shown toward students, and the willingness of staff members to support one another through both challenges and successes.
Great schools are never built by one person. They are built by teams of professionals who share a common purpose and a commitment to continuous improvement.
The culture of collaboration, professionalism, and mutual support among our staff is one of the things that gives me the greatest confidence in the future of our school.
Strengthening the Systems Behind Success
Great schools are not built through isolated successes. They are built through systems.
This year, we continued strengthening the structures that support student learning every day: curriculum alignment, professional development, assessment practices, safeguarding procedures, student support systems, and meaningful collaboration among teachers.
Much of this work happens behind the scenes and is rarely visible to students or parents.Yet it is often these systems that determine whether excellence can be sustained year after year.
Our goal is not simply to have successful moments. Our goal is to build a school capable of consistently delivering an exceptional educational experience for every student.
The Culture We Are Creating
If there is one area that I believe defines a school more than any other, it is culture.
The strongest schools are not necessarily those with the newest facilities or the largest enrolment. They are the schools where students feel known.Where teachers support one another.Where families feel welcomed.Where expectations are high because people genuinely care.Where international-mindedness is lived rather than simply displayed.Where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and grow. That is the culture we continue striving to build at SAIS.A strong culture is not created through slogans.
It is built through daily interactions, shared expectations, and a collective belief that education should develop both character and competence.
