The moment her skateboard landed after an aerial trick, Amy clearly sensed the hidden link between emotions and behavior. When mastering tough new maneuvers, she fought the fear of falling; nailing a challenge brought immense satisfaction. This unique experience of wrestling with her own emotions opened the door to psychology for her.

Supported by Sendelta’s distinctive humanities and social sciences training system, she built a systematic framework of psychological knowledge, conducted in-depth research on local adolescent mental health, and joined top overseas university research programs. She interprets modern people’s mental struggles through a psychological lens, aspiring to safeguard mental wellness with professional expertise.

Today, she holds multiple offers from world-leading universities including the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the University of Southern California, UCL and the University of Toronto. She has forged a path of humanistic inquiry balancing warmth and depth. In this issue of New Youth Vol.75, let’s explore Amy’s growth story.

Skateboarding Sparks Her Initial Passion for Psychology

Amy once studied at a public junior high school, where heavy homework and endless tutoring trapped her in cutthroat academic competition. Most of her hobbies—sailing, kayaking, fencing, skiing—were put aside amid overwhelming schoolwork. After careful consideration, she switched to international education and enrolled at Sendelta, where the learning pace matched her needs.

Unlike traditional schools with rigid evaluation standards, Sendelta encourages students to balance academics and hobbies, embracing diverse growth paths including sports, social practice and academic research. It offers ample room for Amy to explore herself.

Skateboarding became her key social outlet and emotional release. Every time she overcame fear to pull off advanced tricks, she gained sharp insight into how fear, courage and a sense of achievement shape human behavior. These emotional experiences from skateboarding ignited her curiosity about psychology and her desire to study emotions and ease mental distress.

Academic excellence lies at the heart of Sendelta’s education. The school offers comprehensive courses covering humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, laying a solid academic foundation for Amy’s psychology studies. Professional faculty provide full academic support.

Psychology teacher Yanjun delivers lively lectures packed with psychological experiments, helping Amy master core theories and solidify her resolve to pursue psychology. Biology teacher Rochin guided her to understand the physiological connections between emotions, stress and behavior. Math teacher Mike equipped her with data analysis skills for empirical psychological research. Economics teachers May and Lawrence cultivated her ability to analyze social behaviors and manage projects from multiple perspectives.

Looking back on her studies, Amy expresses sincere gratitude to every dedicated teacher, her homeroom teacher who offered companionship and emotional support, and classmates who grew alongside her through mutual encouragement. Her time at Sendelta was fulfilling and heartwarming thanks to them all.

Integrate Theory with Practice: Uncover Root Causes of Mental Distress

Classroom theories alone cannot resolve real-world psychological issues. Drawing on Sendelta’s three core humanities resources—full-spectrum liberal arts curricula, research and innovation centers for hands-on practice, and one-on-one mentorship—Amy stepped outside classrooms to conduct field research, completing full-cycle projects from topic selection and data analysis to result implementation. Strong empirical research skills are core qualities prioritized by CUHK’s social science programs.

At the CTB Global Youth Innovation Research Forum, she studied the "empty youth" phenomenon among Shenzhen high school students. She identified academic pressure, family support gaps and gender role expectations as major contributing factors, and her project won the National Finals Excellence Award.

Instead of stopping at a research report, Amy shared her findings with school counselors and peers to popularize mental health knowledge. This on-campus practice made her truly grasp psychology’s core mission of helping others, strengthening her determination to pursue postgraduate psychology and assist teenagers struggling with mental burdens.

She also joined the NIM Sustainable Development Innovation Challenge, researching "symbolic violence" to analyze psychological distress from a sociocultural perspective. She compiled campus interaction guidelines promoted schoolwide to reduce mental harm caused by prejudiced speech. Her rigorous research and practical outputs earned the Global Jury Outstanding Project Award.

Overseas Research: Explore Diverse Mental Intervention Strategies

Beyond investigating the origins of psychological struggles, Amy took part in top international research programs to broaden her psychological research horizons across cultures and explore varied intervention methods. Her extensive global research experience aligns well with CUHK’s international education ethos.

Under Professor Robin Murphy at the University of Oxford, she researched how ritualized behaviors ease anxiety. She analyzed cases of athletes and students, applying theories including self-efficacy and self-fulfilling prophecies, and published an academic paper based on her work.

During a summer program at Brown University, she visited communities of diverse faiths to study how spiritual practice supports physical and mental healing. She discovered non-religious mindful practices such as yoga and hypnosis can reshape self-perception, offering new approaches to psychological intervention.

These two overseas research stints taught her that mental support takes countless forms, reinforcing her life goal: to deliver professional psychological counseling to high-stress groups and help them achieve holistic wellbeing.

Literature review, logical reasoning and sample analysis skills honed in Sendelta’s psychology, math and economics courses underpinned her long-term research and advanced studies.

Diverse Experiences Shape Her Long-Term Psychology Vision

Beyond academic research, Amy expanded the practical applications of humanities and social sciences through varied extracurricular work. This proactive, dynamic mindset and socially relevant practice are highly valued by CUHK’s psychology department.

In Grade 10, she joined a youth entrepreneurship camp and led a team to develop an overseas education information app. She accurately captured her peers’ anxiety over university applications, winning the Best Individual Award for thorough user research and successful product launch. She also runs a global student psychology resource platform, curating academic papers and research opportunities to build a communication hub for psychology enthusiasts and streamline access to academic resources.

To promote inclusive sports culture, she organized a skateboarding competition single-handedly: securing venues, designing schedules, creating promotional materials, partnering with brands and inviting professional skaters. Nearly 30 participants joined, and the event received coverage from multiple media outlets.

Amy believes moderate pressure drives optimal performance, and refuses to be confined by narrow societal standards. This balanced outlook stems from Sendelta’s student-centered education philosophy—the school respects individual growth timelines and supports students to explore their passions at their own pace.
