"Music education is not the education of musicians, but first and foremost the education of people." This aphorism of the famous educator Sukhomlinsky has not only inspired the reform of school music education since the beginning of the 20th century but has also been adopted by a London Symphony Orchestra's principal violinist as his own guideline for many years of schooling and music education, ISA’s current Music Director — Dr. Nelson Wu.



“音乐教育并不是音乐家的教育,而首先是人的教育。” 著名教育家苏霍姆林斯基的这一句箴言,不仅启迪了自20世纪开始的学校音乐教育改革,同时也被一位伦敦交响乐团首席小提琴家奉为自己多年治学育人的圭臬,而他正是武汉爱莎现任音乐总监——Nelson Wu博士。

The Importance of Music in Holistic Education
音乐在全人教育中的重要性

STEAM and holistic education, is not a new concept, having been developed in the ninth century when Oxford University was first established. Music, at that time, was one of the compulsory subjects offered to all students (the four compulsory subjects were: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy). 

STEAM以及全人教育并不是一个新鲜的概念,在第九世纪牛津大学初成立时,这样的理念就已经形成。音乐,在当时就是提供给所有学生的必修课之一(四门必修课分别是:算数、几何、音乐、天文)。

Educators believed that music was not only a way of providing pleasure to mankind, but also an applied science, and many important discoveries and breakthroughs in mathematics and science were made through music.

教育家们认为,音乐不仅只是作为给人类提供愉悦的方式,同时也是一种应用科学,很多数理方面的重要发现与突破都通过是音乐完成。

Also, if one were to ask any linguist what is the best way to go about learning a language? Then through music and songs must be their common answer. Therefore, music is an excellent bridge to help students develop their abilities in all areas.

另外,如果去问任何一位语言学家,去学习一门语言的最好方式是什么?那么通过音乐和歌曲一定是他们共同的答案。所以,音乐是一个帮助学生各方面能力发展的极佳桥梁。

Many scientific studies and researches have confirmed that, especially for younger students, the process of learning music can help with brain and neurological development, as well as left and right brain coordination.

许多科学研究证实了,尤其对于低年级学生来说,学习音乐的过程可以帮助他们脑力、神经上的发展,以及左右脑的协调。

“That's not true, in an environment of holistic education, everyone with passion can express themselves through music.” Nelson said. “We should make music more accessible, so that music is for all, not for a selective few.”

“这不是真的,在全人教育的环境中,任何拥有兴趣和热爱的人都可以享受这个展示自己的舞台。”Nelson博士说。“我们要做的是让音乐更加容易被接触,因为音乐是给每个人的,不是极个别被选中者。”

At ISA, when a student walks into a violin class, the normal thinking is that the goal of the class is to learn how to play the instrument, but there is more to it than that. In Nelson's class, for example, he prefers to define each of his music lessons as a "problem solving class". In his classes, Nelson leads his students in identifying problems and finding solutions to them, and this process makes the whole lesson more interesting.

在爱莎,当学生走进一节小提琴课时,正常的思维认为课堂目标是去学习演奏小提琴的技巧,但实际上不止如此。例如在Nelson的课堂上,他更希望把他的每一节音乐课定义为“困难解决课”。课堂上Nelson会带领学生一起发现问题并找到解决方案,而这个过程也会让整堂课更加有趣。








So learning music gives students more than just mastering a musical instrument, but it becomes a catalyst for growth in so many different ways, ultimately allowing them to become a better version of themselves and achieve their goals in life, which is what we call a holistic education.

所以学习音乐,给学生带来的不仅仅只是掌握了一门乐器,而是它成为了让学生在诸多不同方面上成长的催化剂,最终让他们变成更好的自己并实现人生目标,这也就是我们所说的全人教育。




“To me holisitc education is not about to ask students to do everything under the sun, but it's to give students access to many possibilities as curriculum wise or co-curriculum, so students can have the best opportunity to discover themselves, and that's why I joined ISA."
