Profile of the Teacher

Foreign Teacher Jesse is from USA, Bachelor of Business Administration. He has been teaching since 2001, starting in Kazakhstan as a volunteer teaching ESL and environmental education. Next he moved to Seoul and was an international primary school teacher for many years teaching English comprehension, science, math and geography. Then he moved to Shanghai to teach creative writing at a IB MYP middle school. Afterwards, he moved to Hong Kong to teach at an international kindergarten. While at this shcool, he focused on a S.T.E.A.M. and Cambridge approach to learning. His favorite hobbies outside of school are marathon running and scuba diving.

外籍教师Jesse来自美国,工商管理学士。他从2001年开始教书,从哈萨克斯坦开始,作为志愿者教授ESL和环境教育。接下来他在首尔的国际小学,教了多年的英语理解、科学、数学和地理。之后在上海的一家IB MYP中学教授创造性写作。后来,他到了香港一家国际幼儿园,专注于S.T.E.A.M.和剑桥学习方法。





The Child at BKIK finds their own Agency. SOOO what does that mean?

BKIK 的孩子们发挥了能动性。这意味着什么呢?


Agency is an interesting word when looking at the IB framework at BKIK.  What does it mean?  Does it mean that the child has control over their learning?  Does it mean that the child has ownership in their learning? Does it mean that to some extent the child is responsible for their own ability to help oneself? 

In short, yes to all of these questions and many more. "Agency is the capacity and propensity to take purposeful initiative—the opposite of helplessness." (IB)

在BKIK的IB框架里,能动性是一个有趣的词语。这意味着什么?这意味着孩子们可以掌握学习的内容?这意味着孩子们在学习中有自主选择的权力?或者意味着从某种程度上,孩子们已经拥有了自己解决问题的能力?

简而言之,对于以上问题,答案都是“是的”,而且并不止这些。能动性是指采取有目的行动的能力和习惯,与无助相反。(IB)


Let’s look at these statements and break them down one by one.

我们一起来看下以下的说明并一一解释。


1.Having my questions shape my learning. 通过提出问题来学习。

When The Child has the ability (agency) to actively guide their own learning it makes schooling more fun and engaging.

当孩子有能力(能动性)去积极地自主学习,学校教学会变得更加有趣和具有参与度。


2.Having a genuine voice in assessment of my learning. 对自己的学习成绩有真正的发言权。

The Child’s own thoughts and observations are part of an assessment, the child feels more heard and loved.  The child knows what they know, and what they have yet learned. We as family and educators need to use this knowledge to help benefit the child.

孩子的想法和观察结果是评定的一部分,这能让孩子感到被聆听和被关爱。孩子会清楚自己懂了什么和已经学习了什么。作为家人和老师需要运用这个知识去帮助孩子成长。


3.Exploring my wondering, curiosities and passions in school. 在学校探索我想知道的、好奇的和感兴趣的事。

When The Child asks the questions, the motivation (agency) is inside them already.

当孩子提出问题,他们就已经充满了学习的动力。


4.Knowing my strengths and stretches as a learner. 作为学习者,我知道我的优势和知识的难点。

The Child knows what they know and what is a “stretch” or a yet to be learned.

孩子知道他们学会了什么和知识的难点或仍未学到的方面。


5.Genuine decision making. 真正的决定权。

By making their own decisions, The Child has ownership (agency) in the process of learning.

通过自己做决定,孩子在学习的过程中有了自主权(能动性)。


6.Showing and explaining my thinking in different ways. 从不同的方式展示和解释我的想法。

When The Child can voice their thoughts in various ways it shows that they are thinking of a situation as a whole, not just a single point of curiosity. 

当孩子能够从不同的方式表达想法,这表明他们能从整体思考问题,而不仅仅是简单地提出疑问。


7.Deciding how I want to share my learning. 决定我该如何分享我的学习成果。

Every child has things they like and don’t like doing. When The Child is given the opportunity (agency) to guide their own learning the motivation is within themselves.

每个孩子都有他们喜欢和不喜欢做的事。当孩子有机会(能动性)去分享学习成果,他们就有的内在的动力。


8.Growing into the person I want to be. 成为自己想要成为的人。

Every person has idols and role-models. (Ultraman is very popular in my class right now ). When the child tries to emulate the traits of these (Ultraman) role-models to become a better person (Ultraman) it is that child seeing something good and wanting to be more like that person.

每个人都有自己的偶像和榜样(奥特曼是我们班上许多孩子的偶像)。当孩子们尝试去模仿他们的偶像(如奥特曼),这表明他们发现了一些好的行为并希望变得像他们的偶像一样优秀。


Having agency is having ownership in your own life. Allowing the child to have control of their learning is very empowering for them. It builds passion. It fosters initiative. It builds determination. These are qualities that every person not only children need in to be successful in life.  Allowing the child to have control (agency) in their own lives whether that be in school or at home teaches them to be more inquisitive and develop passions for more things in life. 

有能动性就是拥有自己生活的所有权。让孩子掌控自己的学习对他们来说是非常有帮助的。能动性有助于建立起对学习的热爱,培养创新精神及果断坚忍的性格。这些都是每个人,不仅仅是孩子,在生活中取得成功所需要的品质。无论在学校还是在家里,允许孩子做决定(发挥能动性)能够满足他们的好奇心,对生活中更多事情充满热情。

Agency at BKIK is,

BKIK的能动性是:


Student Centered, Student Voice, Constructivism, Active, Doing, Elective, Intent Participation, In Control, Programmed. 

It is all these things.  It is meaningful change and that must begin with active student involvement. 

At BKIK we want to see our students have more agency in their studies and daily lives in general.  It cannot be overstated that having more control over the learning process will make it more interesting, engaging and most importantly FUN.

以学生为中心、学生心声、建构主义、积极、行动、可选择、专注、参与、可控制、程序化。

这就是所有的。这是意义深远的改变,需要积极的学生参与其中。

在BKIK我们想看到我们的学生在学习和生活上有更多的主动性。不夸张地说,如果孩子能更多地掌控自己的学习过程,就会提高他们的参与度,最重要的是令他们体验到学习的乐趣。


Give The Child a Voice, Give The Child Control, Give The Child Passion, Give The Child  AGENCY.

请给孩子发言权,给孩子自主权,给孩子热情,给孩子能动力。
