Dear BKIK Friends and Family,

With the start of the school year approaching, the students will join the BKIK family with the attachment of parents and the expectation of a new environment.

In order to carry out the first semester of the new academic year in an orderly manner and to scientifically prevent and control COVID-19, parents are advised to review the “Prospective Student Orientation” and help the student prepare for school life.

Dissociative Anxiety

Due to the sudden change of environment, the children are confronted with an unfamiliar environment and teachers they do not know, and in the process of adaptation, they may show varying degrees of trepidation, anxiety, or fear.

There are the following types of dissociative anxiety.

Resistance

The resistant child will cry incessantly when attending school and is reluctant to contact teachers and other children.

Slow-Start

Slow-start children do not cry when they first start school, but after a few days, they would become reluctant to go to school.

Attachment

Attachment children will cling to teachers, not get along with other children, do not like to participate in activities and are particularly afraid of being separated from adults.

Loneliness

This type of child will be calm in school, neither crying nor willing to interact with others, disengaging from the group and often spending time alone.

Unconstraint

This type of child is unrestrained and undisciplined in school. They would also get into arguments easily.

Ways of Dealing with Dissociative Anxiety

How to get children through dissociative anxiety is a concern for parents. Here we offer you some suggestions and methods that will help your child to adapt to kindergarten life.

Mental Preparation for Child

Discuss Kindergarten Regularly with Child

Parents can tell the children that the school is a place where they can learn knowledge and make many new friends, thus inspiring them to attend kindergarten.

Let Child Get Familiar with the Kindergarten

Parents can take the child to the kindergarten in advance so that the child can recognize places, such as classrooms and toilets, and meet teachers to reduce their strangeness.

Read Books to Relieve Anxiety

Parents can read books such as Hello, Kindergarten, A Day in Kindergarten, and Tom Goes to Kindergarten with the child. Parents can also play school-related games with children at home to help them to feel good about school.

Mental Preparation for Parents

• Keep a Positive Attitude

It is important that all members of the family have a consistent attitude, supporting and encouraging the child to go to school. And parents should relieve the child with an optimistic attitude.

Believe in Your Child

Parents should inspire confidence in the child and encourage him/her to make the lead in overcoming life’s challenges, believing that they are highly adaptable.

Believe in Teachers

Parents should have optimism that the teachers have received professional training, understand child psychology, and are caring and responsible. The respect and trust of parents are the best way to recognize the teachers.

Habit Adjustment

Eating Habits

Parents could maintain the child’s good habits of eating regular meals and eating independently. Before starting the school year, it is recommended that the child eat lighter foods at home to ensure normal consumption of physical activities and to facilitate digestion and absorption.

Hygiene Habits

Parents should remind the child to maintain good hygiene habits at home, such as washing hands when they are dirty and before meals, and rinsing mouths after meals.

Life Routine

Parents can adjust the child's routine to that of kindergarten, so that child will be used to live and studying in kindergarten.

Being Independent

To enable children to settle into a group life as soon as possible, parents should let the child do things like eating, brushing teeth, and putting on and taking off clothes as early as possible.

Being Polite

Parents could also teach children some courtesy expressions such as “please”, “thank you”, “sorry” and “it doesn’t matter” as well as guide children to be humble and caring thus developing the social skills in making friends.

Items Preparation

Prepare and disinfect the child’s bedding in advance.

Prepare two Ziploc bags marked “Discarded Mask A” and “Clean Mask B” with the child’s name and place 3 clean masks in Bag B each day (masks are to be worn on the way in and out of the school).

Have 2-4 sets of clean clothes for the child to change into after outdoor activity. Please make the clothing with your child's name sewn on, and 1-2 storage bags for sorting out the replacement clothes.

Prepare a drinking bottle.

Parents can prepare one or two items that the child is familiar with. The child will develop a deeper attachment to certain items such as a doll and other toys.

You can let your child take these with him/her to school during the adjustment period, which will greatly ease the child’s nervousness.

Epidemic Prevention

No Cross-city Mobility

Unnecessary cross-city and medium or high-risk areas travel should be avoided. Reduce the gathering of meals and parties. Students should not leave Guangzhou within 14 days before going back to school, otherwise, it will affect school registration (if there are any special circumstances, please report to teachers and fill in relevant information).

Normalize Control and Prevention Measures

Please remember to wear masks, follow social distancing guidelines, keep good personal hygiene, cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands regularly and keep windows open as much as possible.

Carry Out Health Monitoring

Carrying out health monitoring is a good opportunity to infuse health education. In the meantime, parents should consistently monitor the child’s temperature and take self-protection measures.

With the start of school approaching, may all new students overcome their anxieties, enter school merrily and inspire their inner strength at BKIK!
