The official definition of PHONICS is “a method of instruction that helps children learn and be able to use the alphabetic principle – the concept that words are made up of letters, and letters represent sounds.” What is the benefit of learning Phonics? What is Phonics?

什么是自然拼读法?

Phonics involves matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. The aim is to teach children to blend the sounds of letters together helps them decode unfamiliar or unknown words by sounding them out. One of the main difficulties children may encounter in reading is understanding the phonics. Children who are unable to associate letters with sounds will struggle when reading. For example, “A” is for apple “A-A-Apple” , and the word “Cat” is made up of 3 sounds: C-A-T=Cat. 

自然拼读法是将英语口语与单个字母和词语相匹配。其目的是指导孩子们将字母和发音联系在一起,帮助他们通过发音来认知不熟悉或未知的单词。孩子们在初期阅读时可能遇到的主要困难之一是理解自然拼读法。如果无法将字母与声音联系起来的儿童在阅读时将会很困难。例如,“Apple” 的“A",A-A-Apple”,“Cat”的“C”,“C-C-Cat”。

Research has shown that phonics is essential to teaching children how to read. Phonics is the initial building block for learning to read and write English. It allows children to improve their reading comprehension and understanding of new vocabulary, helping them to understand the overall meaning of words with ease as they read. As they improve their reading skills, the children also promote the learning of other subjects. The children can also better grasp the knowledge in other subjects, across their school curriculum.

研究表明,自然拼读法对儿童阅读的教学是至关重要的。自然拼读法是一种最基本的学习英语阅读和写作的方法。它让孩子们在阅读过程中提高他们的阅读理解能力,并对新词汇进行理解,帮助他们在阅读时能够轻松地理解单词的整体含义。提高阅读能力的同时,也促进了孩子们其他科目的学习。孩子们更好地掌握其他学科的知识,贯穿学校的课程。


How do we teach Phonics?

如何开展自然拼读法课程?

Teaching phonics always begins during our EY classes. Within the EY1 class, our teacher focuses on teaching the students general English vocabulary, following basic instructions, and listening skills. Our official phonics program begins in our EY2 classes. In EY2 the students learn new sounds each week, then in EY3 they progress onto reading words and sentences. In EY4, we focus moves on to writing skills where students use their phonic knowledge to attempt writing words. For example, writing the word “Storm” would the phonic sounds “S-S-S-T-OR-M”.

自然拼读法的教学从幼儿园阶段开始。在小小班,老师会注重于教学生简单的英语词汇,让学生理解基本的指示和培养听力技能。正式的自然拼读法课程是从幼儿小班开始。在小班,学生每周会学习新的发音,然后在中班,学生会逐步学习阅读单词和句子。在大班,我们专注于培养学生的书写技能,学生利用所学的拼读知识来尝试写单词。例如,当孩子们写“Storm”这个词时,运用自然拼读法发音 "S-S-S-T-OR-M"进行拼写

Within ISA Tianhe the EY students from EY2 upwards have phonics as part of their literacy lesson each day Monday to Friday. Reading and writing skills using phonic knowledge is also integrated into our UOI and math activities and lessons.

在爱莎天河,自然拼读法教学从幼儿园小班开始,周一至周五每天都有自然拼读课程作为识字课的一部分。自然拼读法的阅读和写作技能也穿插在我们的探究单元和数学活动和课程中。


How can you help your child at home?

If parents can read each day with child in English, which can strengthen children’s listening skills and help them begin to hear individual sounds in words. English phonics songs and short videos can help children understand how words are broken down into separate sounds. There are various websites that can teach phonics skills through playing games and fun activities, for example, Busy Things and Reading Eggs. It is important with any activities you do at home you keep it fun and interesting for the children.

家长可以与孩子一起进行英语阅读,有助于加强他们的英语听力技能,并帮助他们听出词语中的单独发音。英语拼读歌曲和短视频可以帮助孩子理解单词是如何被分解成独立的声音的。同时可以通过玩游戏和有趣的活动来教授语音技能,例如网站Busy ThingsReading Eggs

Caroline Coghlan

Early Years Coordinator

As the Early Years coordinator of ISA Tianhe, Caroline brings over 15 years of education experience to our school. Caroline became a member of ISA Tianhe International School of Guangzhou in 2018. Throughout her career, she has worked in Primary and Early Years schools in Ireland, UK and Hong Kong, as well as Early Childhood Centers in USA. 

Caroline拥有15年的教育经验,于2018年加入爱莎天河大家庭,现任幼儿园协调员。在她的职业生涯中,她曾在爱尔兰、英国、香港的幼儿园和小学以及美国的幼儿中心工作。


Caroline graduated from Queens University of Belfast with both a BA Hons in Psychology and then later returned to complete her Masters Degree in Education. She studied for her Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Bath Spa. Caroline has trained in Special Education Needs provision and holds various IB certificates, as well as those specific for teaching English to second language learners. Caroline has held a mentor and supervisor role supporting colleagues who are completing their Postgraduate Certificate of Education. She enjoys forming close relationships with students, parents and co-workers to ensure all members of the ISA Tianhe school community feel seen, heard and valued.
